An area calculator for the UK works out the surface area of a rectangle from its length and width. Enter both measurements in metres or feet to get the result in square metres and square feet, useful for checking the size of a room, patio, lawn or other flat surface.

Formula

For a rectangular or square surface, area is length multiplied by width:

A = l × w

  • A is area, measured here in square metres (m²).
  • l is length in metres (m).
  • w is width in metres (m).

The second calculator result converts square metres to square feet using 1 m² = approximately 10.7639 ft². The conversion factor applies to the area unit: it is not the same as converting a length from metres to feet.

Worked Example

Using the calculator’s default values, length is 5 m and width is 4 m.

  1. Multiply the dimensions: 5 m × 4 m = 20 m².
  2. Convert to square feet: 20 × 10.7639104167 = 215.278208334 ft².
  3. Round each result to two decimal places: 20.00 m² and 215.28 ft².

What an Area Calculator Measures

Area describes how much flat surface lies within a boundary. It is useful for comparing room sizes, planning a floor covering, estimating the footprint of a garden bed or checking the size of a plot. The result is expressed in square units because it combines two lengths: metres multiplied by metres give square metres, while feet multiplied by feet give square feet.

In the UK, square metres are the usual metric unit for many building and property measurements, while square feet also appear in everyday descriptions and listings. For larger land areas, hectares and acres may be more familiar. One hectare is 10,000 m²; one acre is approximately 4,047 m². These are conversions, not different ways to measure a boundary.

How to Measure a Space

Measure the length and width of the surface, using the same unit for both. For a room, measure along the floor rather than relying on an approximate plan dimension. If walls are not square, take measurements at more than one point and decide whether a simple rectangular estimate is sufficient.

  • Clear obstacles from the measuring path where possible.
  • Record measurements with their units, such as 4.2 m or 13 ft 9 in.
  • Convert feet and inches into one unit before multiplying. For example, 9 inches is 0.75 feet, so 13 ft 9 in equals 13.75 ft.
  • For an irregular outline, split the space into rectangles, calculate each area, then add the results.

For a room with a recess or alcove, measure the main rectangle and the additional rectangular section separately. If part of the outline is cut out, calculate that area and subtract it. Sketching the shape and marking dimensions can make it easier to avoid counting a section twice or missing one.

Using the Result for Materials

The calculator gives the geometric area, not the amount of product to buy. Flooring, tiles, paint and other materials may need extra allowance for cuts, waste, pattern matching or surface preparation. The appropriate allowance depends on the material, layout and supplier guidance, so check the product instructions rather than treating the calculator’s result as a purchase quantity.

For example, a rectangular floor measuring 5 m by 4 m has an area of 20 m². That figure does not automatically mean that exactly 20 m² of flooring will cover the job: boards may be cut, and the installation pattern can affect waste. For a product sold in packs, divide the required coverage by the stated coverage per pack and round up to a whole pack. Use the coverage printed for the specific product.

Common Measurement Mistakes and Limits

The most frequent error is mixing units. Multiplying a length in metres by a width in centimetres produces a number with mixed units, not a valid area in either square metres or square centimetres. Convert both measurements first. Another common misunderstanding is to square only one dimension; area requires multiplying length by width, whereas squaring a length is appropriate only when the shape is a square and both sides are equal.

  • Do not confuse area with perimeter: area measures the surface inside a boundary; perimeter is the distance around it.
  • Keep precision until the end: rounding each measurement early can slightly change the final area.
  • Check the shape: length × width applies to rectangles and squares, not every outline.
  • Remember height is different: a three-dimensional volume calculation also needs depth or height.

This page assumes a flat rectangle. For a triangle, use base × perpendicular height ÷ 2. A circle uses π × radius². An irregular surface may need to be divided into simpler shapes or measured using a suitable mapping method. Sloped surfaces can also have a different surface area from their horizontal footprint, so decide which area you actually need before measuring.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate area in square metres?
Measure length and width in metres, then multiply them. A 3 m by 2 m rectangle has an area of 6 m².

How do I convert square metres to square feet?
Multiply the square-metre value by approximately 10.7639. For example, 10 m² is about 107.64 ft².

Can I use this calculator for a garden or lawn?
Yes, if the area is rectangular. For an L-shaped or irregular lawn, split it into rectangles, calculate each part and add the areas.

Is square metres the same as metres squared?
Yes. Both refer to an area unit formed by multiplying metres by metres. A square measuring 1 m on each side has an area of 1 m².

How do I calculate the area of a room with an alcove?
Measure the main rectangular section and the alcove separately, calculate each area, then add them. Subtract any cut-out spaces that are not part of the floor.

Does area tell me how much flooring to buy?
It gives the floor’s measured surface area, but not necessarily the order quantity. Check pack coverage and allow for cuts or waste according to the material and installation instructions.
