Delhi Jal Board Bill Calculator: How It Works

Tag 07-2907 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The calculator on this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example shows how to do the sum by hand.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) bill calculator works out your monthly water charges based on your meter reading, property type, and the number of water connections. You enter your current and previous meter readings (in kilolitres) and select your consumer category, and the calculator returns your total bill including fixed charges and applicable taxes. This guide explains the formula, the slab rates, and how to use the calculator correctly.

Formula

The DJB bill is calculated in two parts: a variable charge based on water consumed and a fixed charge based on the connection size and category. The variable charge uses a slab system, meaning the rate per kilolitre (kL) increases as consumption rises. The formula is:

Total Bill = (Consumption × Slab Rate) + Fixed Charge + Taxes

Where:

  • Consumption = Current Reading − Previous Reading (in kilolitres)
  • Slab Rate = the per-kL charge for your consumption bracket (see table below)
  • Fixed Charge = a monthly fee based on your connection size (usually 15mm for homes) and category
  • Taxes = currently 20% of the water charges (as of 2024)

The calculator above uses a simplified flat rate per category for illustration. For the actual slab rates, use the official DJB tariff table.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator: current reading = 25 kL, previous reading = 18 kL, residential category.

  1. Consumption = 25 − 18 = 7 kL
  2. Variable charge (residential, up to 10 kL slab) = 7 × ₹12.5 = ₹87.5
  3. Fixed charge (residential, 15mm connection) = ₹100
  4. Subtotal = 87.5 + 100 = ₹187.5
  5. Taxes (20%) = 187.5 × 0.20 = ₹37.5
  6. Total bill = 187.5 + 37.5 = ₹225

The calculator block gives the same result: consumption 7 kL, bill ₹225 (rounded to two decimals).

DJB Slab Rates (Residential)

Delhi Jal Board uses a progressive slab system for residential consumers. As of the 2024-25 tariff, the monthly charges per kilolitre are:

  • 0–10 kL: ₹12.50 per kL
  • 10–20 kL: ₹30 per kL
  • 20–30 kL: ₹50 per kL
  • Above 30 kL: ₹80 per kL

For example, if your consumption is 25 kL, the bill is calculated as: first 10 kL at ₹12.5, next 10 kL at ₹30, and remaining 5 kL at ₹50. That works out to 10×12.5 + 10×30 + 5×50 = 125 + 300 + 250 = ₹675 (before fixed charge and taxes).

Commercial, industrial, and institutional categories have higher flat rates (around ₹60, ₹80, and ₹100 per kL respectively) and higher fixed charges.

How to Use the Official DJB Bill Calculator

The official DJB website (delhijalboard.in) provides a bill calculator under the “Online Services section. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Go to the DJB website and click on “Bill Calculator (or “Water Bill Calculator).
  2. Enter your Consumer ID (found on your previous bill) or your K Number.
  3. Alternatively, select “Without Login and enter your property details manually.
  4. Enter the current meter reading and the previous reading (from your last bill).
  5. Select your consumer category (residential, commercial, etc.) and connection size.
  6. Click “Calculate to see the estimated bill.

If you don’t have a meter (unmetered connection), the DJB charges a fixed amount based on your property size and category—this is not calculated by the meter-based formula.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

A frequent error is using the number of people in the household instead of the meter reading. The DJB bill is based on consumption, not occupancy. Another mistake is forgetting to include the fixed charge, which is separate from the per-kL charge and applies even if you use zero water.

Many people also confuse the slab system with a flat rate. The slab system means you pay different rates for different portions of your consumption—not a single rate for the whole amount. For example, if you use 12 kL, you pay the lower rate for the first 10 kL and the higher rate for the remaining 2 kL.

Also note that the DJB bill includes a 20% sewerage surcharge on the water charges (this is sometimes listed separately). The calculator above includes this as part of the tax line.

How to Read Your DJB Bill

Your DJB bill has several components:

  • Previous Reading and Current Reading – the meter readings in kilolitres
  • Consumption – the difference (current minus previous)
  • Water Charges – the variable amount based on slab rates
  • Fixed Charges – the monthly connection fee
  • Sewerage Charges – usually 20% of water charges
  • Arrears – any unpaid amount from previous bills
  • Total Payable – the sum of all above

If your bill seems too high, check the meter reading on the bill against your actual meter. A wrong reading is the most common cause of billing errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the DJB bill calculated for a 20 kL consumption?

For residential use, the first 10 kL are charged at ₹12.5/kL, and the next 10 kL at ₹30/kL. So the variable charge is 10×12.5 + 10×30 = ₹425. Add the fixed charge (₹100 for a 15mm connection) to get ₹525, then add 20% sewerage tax (₹105) for a total of ₹630.

What if I don’t have a water meter?

Unmetered connections are billed a flat rate based on the size of your property and the number of taps. You can find the exact amount on your previous bill or by contacting the DJB. The meter-based calculator won’t apply to you.

Can I pay my DJB bill online?

Yes, you can pay through the DJB website, the DJB mobile app, or through third-party platforms like Paytm, PhonePe, or your bank’s net banking. You’ll need your Consumer ID or K Number.

Why is my bill higher than my neighbor’s even though we use the same water?

Possible reasons: different connection sizes (a 20mm connection has a higher fixed charge), different consumer categories (commercial vs residential), or a meter reading error. Check your bill for the connection size and category.

How do I correct a wrong meter reading on my bill?

Contact the DJB customer care (phone: 1916) or visit your zonal office with a photo of your current meter reading. They will issue a revised bill after verifying the reading.

Is there a subsidy for residential consumers?

Yes, the Delhi government provides a subsidy for households with a monthly consumption of up to 20 kL. The subsidy is applied automatically to your bill, reducing the water charges to zero for the first 20 kL (you still pay fixed charges and sewerage charges).
