The Dominator polymeric sand calculator estimates how many bags you may need to fill the joints in a paver surface. Enter the paved area, joint width and depth, and the coverage figure printed on your chosen product; the result is an estimated number of bags, rounded up to a whole bag.
Formula
The estimate treats the joints as a combined volume and divides that volume by the amount of joint volume one bag can fill, as represented by the product’s stated coverage for the same joint dimensions. In this calculator, the coverage input is the square feet of pavers one bag covers at the entered joint width and depth.
Bags = round up [area × joint width × joint depth ÷ (144 × coverage per bag)]
- Area (a): paved surface area in square feet (ft²).
- Joint width (w): average joint width in inches (in).
- Joint depth (d): depth to be filled in inches (in).
- Product coverage (c): square feet covered per bag for the joint dimensions entered (ft²/bag). Use the manufacturer’s coverage information for the exact product, paver and joint conditions.
- 144: square inches in one square foot, converting the two inch-based joint measurements to a volume relative to area in square feet.
The area conversions are 1 square yard = 9 square feet and 1 square metre ≈ 10.764 square feet. They are reference outputs; the bag estimate uses square feet.
Worked Example
Using the calculator’s default values—200 ft² of paving, 0.25 in joints, 2 in joint depth and a product coverage figure of 40 ft² per bag:
- Multiply the area by joint width and depth: 200 × 0.25 × 2 = 100.
- Multiply coverage by 144: 40 × 144 = 5,760.
- Divide: 100 ÷ 5,760 = 0.01736 bags before rounding.
- Round up to a whole bag: 1 bag.
The other outputs are 200 ÷ 9 = 22.22 yd² and 200 × 0.09290304 = 18.58 m², rounded to two decimal places.
How to Use the Estimate
Measure the area that will actually receive pavers, not the whole yard or project footprint if some parts are planting beds, steps or other materials. For a rectangle, multiply length by width. For an irregular layout, split it into rectangles or other simple shapes, find each area, and add them. Keep all area measurements in square feet for the calculator.
Estimate the average width and filling depth of the joints. Use measurements from several representative spots because joint widths can vary across a job. The relevant depth is the depth of joint that the sand is intended to occupy, not automatically the full depth of the paver. Follow the product’s installation instructions when determining the proper joint depth and whether the product is suitable for the paving material.
Finally, find the product’s coverage figure for your conditions. The default 40 ft² per bag is only a sample input, not a universal Dominator product specification. Coverage changes with paver dimensions, joint width and depth, surface layout, and the specific sand formulation. If a label or manufacturer guide gives a range, use the more conservative figure for planning and verify it against the package directions.
What the Result Means—and Its Limits
The output is a planning estimate rounded upward to a whole bag; it is not a guarantee that the material will cover a particular installation. A larger coverage value means each bag is expected to cover more area and therefore lowers the calculated quantity. If your chosen product provides coverage in a table, select the entry that most closely matches your paver and joints rather than applying an unrelated number.
This calculation simplifies the project to a consistent average joint size and product coverage. It does not account precisely for irregular joints, unusually deep gaps, edge losses, installation technique, material spilled during handling, or variations in the paving surface. The calculator also cannot identify which Dominator product is compatible with your pavers or site. Check the current product label and instructions, especially if the surface material, joint dimensions, drainage conditions or exposure differ from the stated application.
Use the result to plan, then consider whether a small reserve is sensible for your project. Do not change the entered coverage figure merely to force a desired bag count; it should reflect the actual product information and conditions. For a very small job, the mathematical estimate may be less than one bag, but the output remains one because bags are purchased as whole units.
Common Mistakes and Product Checks
- Mixing units: Enter paved area in ft² and joint width and depth in inches. Do not enter square metres or centimetres without converting first.
- Using the wrong coverage: A coverage number applies to particular joint dimensions and a particular product. Read the label or manufacturer’s current guidance.
- Measuring the full paver thickness: Enter the joint-filling depth, as directed for the product, not simply the thickness of the paver.
- Assuming the estimate is an installation guide: The calculator estimates quantity only. Preparation, application, compaction, cleanup and curing requirements come from the product instructions.
- Ignoring the layout: Large pavers generally create less joint length per square foot than small units, so two equally sized patios can require different amounts.
Polymeric sand is not interchangeable with every jointing material. Confirm the product is intended for the type of pavers and joint dimensions in your project. Follow package directions for dry conditions, water activation, cleanup and the time needed before use or exposure to rain. Improper application can leave residue or affect how the joint material sets; do not rely on this quantity calculation to resolve those issues.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many bags of Dominator polymeric sand do I need?
Enter your paved area, average joint width and depth, and the coverage per bag for the specific product and conditions. The calculator estimates the quantity and rounds up to a whole bag.
Is 40 square feet per bag the official Dominator coverage?
No. It is only the calculator’s default example. Coverage depends on the product and installation details, so use the current package or manufacturer information for the bag you plan to buy.
Can I use this calculator with square metres?
Convert the area to square feet before entering it. One square metre is approximately 10.764 ft²; the calculator’s metric output converts the entered area but does not accept metric area as its input.
Why does joint width change the number of bags?
Wider joints contain more material per unit of paving area. The calculator accounts for width and depth, but its estimate still depends on using an appropriate product coverage figure for those dimensions.
Does the calculator tell me how to install the sand?
No. It estimates quantity only. Follow the selected product’s instructions for suitability, surface preparation, application, cleanup, water activation and curing conditions.
