How to Recover Deleted Notes on iPhone

Guide 10-24150 · Updated · Step by step

If you accidentally deleted a note on your iPhone, you can usually get it back from the Recently Deleted folder in the Notes app, which keeps notes for up to 30 days. For notes deleted longer ago or removed from that folder, your best recovery options are an iCloud or iTunes/Finder backup. This article walks you through each method, explains how the recovery process works, and answers common questions about restoring lost notes.

What Happens When You Delete a Note

When you delete a note from the Notes app on your iPhone, it isn’t immediately erased. It moves to the Recently Deleted folder, where it stays for 30 days. This gives you a grace period to change your mind. During those 30 days, the note still takes up space on your device and in iCloud if you have iCloud Notes enabled, but it is hidden from your main notes list.

After 30 days, the note is permanently removed from the Recently Deleted folder. At that point, the only way to get it back is from a backup that was made before the note was permanently deleted. This is why it’s important to act quickly and to understand which backup method applies to your situation.

Method 1: Recover from Recently Deleted (Within 30 Days)

This is the fastest and most common recovery method. It works for any note deleted within the last 30 days, whether it was stored on your iPhone, in iCloud, or on a connected email account.

  1. Open the Notes app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Back button (usually in the top-left corner) until you see the folder list.
  3. Look for the Recently Deleted folder. If you don’t see it, pull down on the screen to refresh the list.
  4. Tap Recently Deleted to open it. You’ll see a list of notes that are scheduled for permanent deletion.
  5. Tap the note you want to recover, then tap Recover in the bottom-right corner.
  6. Alternatively, you can tap Edit in the top-right, select multiple notes, and then tap Recover to restore them all at once.

The note will be moved back to its original folder. If the original folder no longer exists, the note will be placed in a new folder called Notes.

Method 2: Recover from an iCloud Backup

If the note is not in Recently Deleted, your next best option is an iCloud backup. iCloud automatically backs up your iPhone when it is connected to Wi-Fi, locked, and charging. Restoring from an iCloud backup will replace all the current data on your iPhone with the data from the backup, so this should be a last resort.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
  2. Follow the on-screen steps to set up your iPhone until you reach the Apps & Data screen.
  3. Tap Restore from iCloud Backup.
  4. Sign in with your Apple ID and choose the backup that was made before the note was permanently deleted.

Keep in mind that any data created after that backup will be lost. Also, if you have iCloud Notes enabled, your notes are stored in iCloud and are not included in the device backup—they are synced separately. In that case, restoring a device backup may not bring back a deleted note because the note was already removed from iCloud.

Method 3: Recover from a Computer Backup (Finder or iTunes)

If you regularly back up your iPhone to a computer, you can restore from that backup. The process is similar to the iCloud restore, but you’ll use a Mac or PC.

  1. Connect your iPhone to the computer you normally back it up to.
  2. Open Finder on a Mac (macOS Catalina or later) or iTunes on a PC or older Mac.
  3. Select your device when it appears.
  4. Click Restore Backup and choose the backup that predates the note’s deletion.

This method is only useful if you have a backup from before the note was permanently deleted. If your computer backups are encrypted, you’ll need the password to restore.

What If the Note Was Deleted from iCloud.com?

If you deleted the note from iCloud.com (in a web browser), it also goes to the Recently Deleted folder on iCloud.com, which keeps notes for 30 days. You can recover it there:

  1. Go to icloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID.
  2. Click Notes.
  3. Click Recently Deleted in the sidebar.
  4. Select the note and click Recover.

This is handy if you have access to a computer and prefer not to use your iPhone. The note will sync back to your iPhone automatically if iCloud Notes is enabled.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

“I don’t see Recently Deleted in my Notes app.” This folder only appears if you have at least one note in it. If it’s missing, it means you have no recently deleted notes, or the 30-day period has passed for all of them.

“I deleted a note from a folder that was shared with someone else.” If the note was in a shared folder, deleting it removes it for everyone. The note will appear in the owner’s Recently Deleted folder, but not necessarily in yours.

“My note was on my iPhone but not in iCloud.” Notes stored only on your iPhone (in the “On My iPhone” folder) are still moved to Recently Deleted when you delete them. However, they are not included in iCloud backups unless you have iCloud Notes enabled.

How to Avoid Losing Notes in the Future

Prevention is always better than recovery. Here are a few habits that will reduce the risk of losing important notes:

  • Enable iCloud Notes so your notes are synced across all devices and backed up in iCloud.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple ID to protect your iCloud data.
  • Make regular backups to iCloud or your computer.
  • Use folders and tags to keep notes organized, so you’re less likely to delete the wrong one.
  • Export important notes as PDFs or text files if they contain critical information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover a note deleted more than 30 days ago?

Only if you have a backup from before the note was permanently deleted. Check your iCloud backups or computer backups. If no backup exists, the note is likely gone forever.

Does the Recently Deleted folder count against my iCloud storage?

Yes, notes in Recently Deleted still occupy storage space until they are permanently removed. Once the 30-day period ends, they are deleted and the space is freed.

Will restoring from a backup affect my other data?

Yes, restoring from a backup replaces all the data on your iPhone with the data from the backup. Anything you created or changed after the backup was made will be lost. This is why it’s best to try the Recently Deleted folder first.

Can I recover a note if I didn’t have iCloud Notes enabled?

Yes, if the note was stored on your iPhone, it still goes to Recently Deleted when deleted. If it’s been more than 30 days, you would need a local backup from iTunes/Finder.

What if I deleted a note from the Notes widget on the home screen?

Deleting from the widget works the same as deleting from the app—the note goes to Recently Deleted. You can recover it using the same steps.
