How to Access Photos in Messages on iOS 12

Guide 10-2574 · Updated · Step by step

On an iPhone or iPad running iOS 12, you can find photos shared in a conversation without scrolling through every message. Open the conversation’s information screen to view its shared attachments, then tap a photo to see or save it. You’ll need access to the device and the Messages conversation where the photo was sent or received.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 12.
  • The Messages app and the conversation containing the photo.
  • If you plan to save a photo, enough available storage and permission to access Photos if prompted.

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Messages. Tap the green Messages app icon. If you’re already viewing a conversation, tap the back arrow in the top-left corner to return to the conversation list.
  2. Open the right conversation. Tap the person or group chat where the photo was shared. If you cannot find it in the list, swipe down on the conversation list to reveal Search, then enter a name or a word from the conversation. Search availability and results depend on what is stored on the device.
  3. Open the conversation details. In the conversation, tap the name or group name at the top of the screen. In iOS 12, this opens the conversation’s details view, with options and shared content.
  4. Find the Photos section. Look for the section labeled Images or Photos in the details view. The wording and layout can vary depending on the conversation and iOS 12 version. You may need to scroll down to see the shared images.
  5. Browse the shared photos. Tap See All, if it appears, to view more images from that conversation. Scroll through the grid and tap a thumbnail to open an individual photo.
  6. View the photo. Once open, swipe left or right to move between available images. Tap the screen to show or hide controls. If the item is a video rather than a still image, tap its play control.
  7. Save a photo to your library, if wanted. With the photo open, tap the share button (the square with an upward arrow). In the share sheet, choose Save Image if that option is available. The image should then appear in the Photos app, usually in the Recents album. A photo already saved may not show the save option.
  8. Return to the conversation. Tap Done or use the back control to leave the photo viewer and details screen. The original message remains in the conversation unless it has been deleted or is no longer available.

Common Mistakes

  • Looking in the message list instead of conversation details. The image gallery is reached by tapping the name at the top of the open conversation, not by tapping the conversation list title.
  • Assuming the photo was saved automatically. Seeing an image in Messages does not necessarily mean it is in the Photos library. Use the share sheet and choose Save Image to copy it there.
  • Opening the wrong thread. People may have multiple conversations, including group chats. Check the name or group members before browsing or saving an attachment.
  • Expecting every old attachment to appear. Deleted messages, attachments removed from the device, or content that has not finished downloading may not be available in the gallery.
  • Confusing an image thumbnail with the original message. The gallery helps locate shared media, but tapping a thumbnail may not take you to the exact point in the chat where it was sent. Use the conversation history if you need the surrounding messages.

Tips

  • If the details screen shows See All, use it to browse the conversation’s images together rather than scrolling through the chat.
  • For a photo you may need later, save it to Photos and consider adding it to an album. This makes it easier to find independently of the message thread.
  • Check that the photo is fully displayed before saving. A placeholder or loading indicator can mean the attachment has not finished downloading.
  • To save several photos, open each one and use the share sheet, or select multiple items if the gallery offers a selection control. Available controls can differ by iOS 12 release and content type.
  • Keep in mind that saving a copy does not remove or alter the image in the conversation. Conversely, deleting a message or attachment may affect whether it remains accessible through Messages.

Troubleshooting

The Images or Photos section is missing: Confirm that you opened the conversation details by tapping the name at the top of the chat. Scroll through the details page. If no shared-media section appears, that thread may not contain an available image attachment, or the content may have been removed.

A thumbnail will not open or remains blank: Check that the device has an internet connection, especially if the attachment needs to download. Return to the conversation, wait briefly, and tap the image again. If it still fails, close Messages, reopen it, and retry. Restarting the device can also help with a temporary app or network issue.

The photo opens but will not save: Tap the share button and check whether Save Image is offered. If it is absent, the item may not be a regular photo, may already be in Photos, or may not have downloaded completely. Check available device storage in Settings > General > iPhone Storage, then try again.

The saved image is not easy to find: Open Photos and check Albums > Recents. You can also use the Photos app’s search or library view. Allow a moment for the library to update after saving.

The conversation or attachment is gone: Search Messages for the contact or group and check whether the conversation was deleted or filtered out. If the message itself was deleted and no copy exists in Photos or another backup, Messages may not be able to restore that attachment. Avoid deleting more messages while checking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are photos stored in an iOS 12 Messages conversation?
Open the chat, tap the name at the top, and look for its shared Images or Photos section. The gallery displays attachments from that conversation.

How do I save a Messages photo to my iPhone?
Open the photo, tap the share button, and choose Save Image. Then look in the Photos app, often under Recents.

Can I see all photos shared with one person?
You can browse photos associated with an individual conversation using its details screen. If you have more than one thread with that person, check each relevant conversation.

Why can’t I see an old photo in the gallery?
The message or attachment may have been deleted, may not be downloaded, or may no longer be stored on the device. Try opening the original chat and checking the connection.

Does viewing a photo save it to Photos automatically?
No. Viewing it in Messages does not necessarily add it to your photo library. Use Save Image in the share sheet to save a copy when available.

Can I access these steps on newer iOS versions?
The general method is similar, but labels and screen layouts can change. This guide describes the iOS 12 interface; on newer versions, tap the conversation name or contact details and look for shared photos or attachments.
