WhatsApp Favorites: Add, Remove & Organize

Guide 10-8942 · Updated · Step by step

WhatsApp’s Favorites feature gives you quick access to the chats, groups, and calls you use most, without digging through your full chat list. This guide shows you how to add, remove, and organize favorites on both Android and iPhone, and what to do when the feature doesn’t behave as expected.

What You’ll Need

  • A smartphone with WhatsApp installed and logged in (Android or iPhone)
  • The latest version of WhatsApp from your app store (Favorites rolled out in 2024, so older versions may not have it)
  • Your chat history backed up if you plan to clear WhatsApp data during troubleshooting

Step-by-Step

Adding a Chat to Favorites

  1. Open WhatsApp on your phone.
  2. Tap the Chats tab at the bottom (Android) or top (iPhone).
  3. Find the chat you want to favorite. You can scroll or use the search bar at the top.
  4. Press and hold the chat until a checkmark appears next to it (Android) or until the menu pops up (iPhone).
  5. Tap the star icon (☆) in the top bar (Android) or select Add to favorites from the menu (iPhone).
  6. The chat now appears under the Favorites filter at the top of your chat list.

Adding a Group or Contact from the Chat Window

  1. Open the chat, group, or call log you want to favorite.
  2. Tap the contact or group name at the top of the screen.
  3. Scroll down and tap Add to favorites (or the star icon).
  4. Confirm if prompted. The item is now in your Favorites list.

Adding a Call to Favorites

  1. Tap the Calls tab.
  2. Find the call entry (individual or group call) you want to keep.
  3. Tap the info (i) icon next to it.
  4. Select Add to favorites.

Removing a Favorite

  1. Go to the Chats tab.
  2. Tap the Favorites filter at the top (it shows a star icon).
  3. Press and hold the chat you want to remove.
  4. Tap the star icon again (now filled) to unfavorite it, or choose Remove from favorites from the menu.
  5. The chat disappears from the Favorites filter but stays in your normal chat list.

Organizing Favorites (Reordering)

  1. Tap the Favorites filter to see only favorited chats.
  2. Tap Edit in the top-right corner (iPhone) or the three-dot menu → Edit favorites (Android).
  3. Drag the hamburger icon (≡) next to each chat to reorder them.
  4. Tap Done or Save to lock in the new order.
  5. The order you set here is the order shown under the Favorites filter and in the call log’s Favorites tab.

Using Favorites for Calls

  1. Tap the Calls tab.
  2. You’ll see a Favorites row at the top with circular avatars.
  3. Tap a contact’s avatar to start a call immediately, or tap More to see all favorites.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing Favorites with Pinned chats: Pinning keeps a chat at the top of your regular list; Favorites creates a separate filter. They do not sync — favoriting a chat does not pin it, and vice versa.
  • Expecting Favorites to appear on WhatsApp Web/Desktop: As of now, the Favorites filter is mobile-only. You can still see the chats, but the filter and reordering are not available on desktop.
  • Removing a favorite by deleting the chat: Deleting a chat removes it from your chat list entirely, not just from Favorites. Use the star icon to unfavorite without deleting.
  • Forgetting that group calls can be favorited: Group calls appear in the Calls tab; you can favorite them the same way as individual calls.
  • Not updating WhatsApp: If you don’t see Favorites at all, you’re likely on an outdated version. Update from your app store first.

Tips

  • Use Favorites for people you contact daily — family, work partners, or your most active group chats. Keep the list short (5–10) so it stays useful.
  • Combine Favorites with the Filter buttons (All, Unread, Favorites, Groups) to quickly switch between views.
  • On iPhone, you can also add a Favorites widget to your home screen that shows your starred contacts for one-tap calling.
  • Reordering works best when you put your most frequent contacts first — the order you set is the order you see, so make it match your habits.
  • If you have many favorites, use the search bar inside the Favorites filter to jump to a specific one instead of scrolling.

Troubleshooting

I don’t see the Favorites filter at all.
Update WhatsApp to the latest version. If it’s still missing, restart the app. On rare occasions, the feature rolls out server-side, so wait a few days and check again.

My favorite disappeared after I restarted the app.
This usually happens if you removed it accidentally. Check the chat list — if the chat still exists, re-add it. If the chat itself is gone, you may have deleted it or the other person deleted their account. Restore from backup only if you’re sure the chat was deleted.

Reordering favorites doesn’t save.
Make sure you tap Done or Save after dragging. If it still resets, force-close WhatsApp and reopen it. If the issue persists, clear the app cache (Android: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Storage → Clear Cache; iPhone: offload the app and reinstall — this does not delete chats if you have iCloud backup).

Favorites show on my phone but not on WhatsApp Web.
This is expected behavior — Favorites is a mobile-only filter. Use the regular chat list on desktop.

I can’t favorite a chat — the star icon is greyed out.
This can happen with archived chats. Unarchive the chat first, then try favoriting it. Also check that you have a stable internet connection, as the action syncs with WhatsApp servers.

After updating WhatsApp, my favorites are gone.
Favorites are tied to your account, not the app install. Log out and log back in, or restart your phone. If they still don’t return, re-add them manually — it takes less than a minute for a handful of chats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I favorite a chat from the chat list without opening it?
Yes. Press and hold the chat in the list, then tap the star icon in the top bar (Android) or choose “Add to favorites” from the menu (iPhone).

What’s the difference between Favorites and Pinned chats?
Pinned chats stay at the top of your regular chat list. Favorites create a separate filter that shows only your starred chats. You can use both — pin for visibility, favorite for quick filtering.

Can I favorite a chat that is archived?
No, you need to unarchive it first. Archived chats are hidden and can’t be favorited until you bring them back to the main list.

Do favorites sync across devices?
Yes, on your phone they sync with your WhatsApp account. However, the Favorites filter and reordering are not available on WhatsApp Web or Desktop — you only see the normal chat list there.

Can I favorite a chat with someone who blocked me?
If you’re blocked, you can still see the chat in your list, and you can favorite it. However, you won’t receive messages from them, and the chat may appear inactive. The favorite will stay until you remove it.

Is there a limit to how many favorites I can have?
WhatsApp doesn’t document a hard limit, but for practical use keep it under 20–30. Beyond that, the filter becomes less useful and harder to scroll through.
