How to Block Spam Messages on iPhone

Guide 10-29170 · Updated · Step by step

Spam messages on iPhone can range from annoying marketing texts to dangerous phishing attempts. This guide shows you how to block unwanted messages, filter unknown senders, and report spam—so your Messages app stays clean and secure. You’ll learn the built-in methods that require no third-party apps, plus what to do when spam still gets through.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone running iOS 13 or later (for the Filter Unknown Senders feature)
  • Your Apple ID password (if you need to manage blocked contacts across devices)
  • Optional: A third-party spam-blocking app (explained in Tips)

Step-by-Step

Block a Specific Number

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap the conversation from the number you want to block.
  3. Tap the contact or number at the top of the screen.
  4. Tap Info (the “i” in a circle).
  5. Scroll down and tap Block this Caller.
  6. Confirm by tapping Block Contact in the pop-up.

The blocked sender can no longer message you, call you, or FaceTime you. Their messages won’t appear in your inbox, and you won’t get notifications.

Filter Unknown Senders

  1. Go to Settings > Messages.
  2. Scroll down and turn on Filter Unknown Senders.
  3. Open the Messages app—you’ll see tabs at the top: Unknown Senders and Known Senders.
  4. Messages from numbers not in your contacts (and not previously messaged) go to the Unknown Senders tab, with notifications muted.

This doesn’t block them, but it keeps them out of your main inbox. You can still check the Unknown Senders tab if you’re expecting a legit message from an unrecognized number.

Report Spam to Apple (iMessage only)

  1. Open the spam message in the Unknown Senders tab.
  2. Tap the Report Junk link at the bottom of the message (if available).
  3. Tap Delete and Report Junk.

This deletes the message and sends a copy to Apple to improve spam detection. Note: this only works for iMessage (blue bubbles), not SMS (green bubbles).

Block via Phone App (for calls and texts)

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Go to Recents.
  3. Tap the “i” next to the spam number.
  4. Scroll down and tap Block this Caller.

This blocks calls and texts from that number, just like blocking from Messages.

Use a Third-Party Spam Blocker (optional)

  1. Download a reputable spam-blocking app from the App Store (e.g., Hiya, RoboKiller, Truecaller).
  2. Open the app and follow its setup instructions.
  3. Go to Settings > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification.
  4. Enable the app’s toggle so it can identify and block spam calls.
  5. For SMS, some apps offer message filtering—enable it in Settings > Messages > Unknown & Spam if the app supports it.

Common Mistakes

  • Only blocking in Messages, not Phone: Blocking from Messages does block calls too, but if you block from Phone, it also blocks FaceTime. Make sure you block from the right app if you want all forms of contact blocked.
  • Expecting SMS to be filtered: Filter Unknown Senders only works for iMessage and SMS from unknown numbers—but it doesn’t block them, just separates them. For true blocking, you must block the number.
  • Not reporting spam: If you just delete spam without reporting, Apple’s spam filters don’t improve. Always use “Report Junk” for iMessage spam.
  • Blocking a legitimate business: Sometimes you might block a number that later sends a legit delivery update. You can unblock anytime, but double-check before blocking.

Tips

  • Use “Do Not Disturb” for unknown callers: Go to Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and enable Silence Unknown Callers. This sends calls from unknown numbers to voicemail (but doesn’t block texts).
  • Don’t reply to spam: Replying confirms your number is active, leading to more spam. Just block and delete.
  • Check your blocked list regularly: Go to Settings > Messages > Blocked Contacts to review and remove any numbers you no longer need blocked.
  • Use the “Report Junk” feature on macOS too: If you use iMessage on a Mac, you can right-click a message and select Report Junk to help Apple.
  • Consider a third-party app for SMS spam: Some apps can filter SMS based on known spam databases, but they may require you to grant access to your messages—weigh privacy vs. convenience.

Troubleshooting

Spam still appears after blocking: If you blocked a number but still see messages, it might be from a different number (spammers often change numbers). Block that new number too. Also, ensure you blocked the correct number—check the full number in the message details.

“Report Junk” doesn’t appear: This option only shows for iMessage from unknown senders. If the message is green (SMS), you can’t report it to Apple. You can still block the number.

Filter Unknown Senders doesn’t work: Make sure you have iOS 13 or later. Also, if you have a business chat or known sender, they might still appear in Known Senders. Check that the toggle is actually on in Settings.

Blocked contacts can still leave voicemail: Blocking prevents calls, but some carriers still allow voicemail. To avoid this, you may need to contact your carrier to block the number at the network level.

Third-party app not blocking SMS: iOS only allows SMS filtering if the app is properly configured. Go to Settings > Messages > Unknown & Spam and enable the app under SMS Filtering. If it’s not listed, reinstall the app and follow its setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will blocking a number also block FaceTime calls?

Yes, when you block a contact from Messages or Phone, it also blocks FaceTime calls from that number.

Can I block a number without them knowing?

Yes, blocking is silent. The sender won’t get a notification; their messages just won’t be delivered, and calls go to voicemail (or are declined).

How do I unblock a number?

Go to Settings > Messages > Blocked Contacts, tap Edit, then tap the red minus next to the number and confirm.

Does “Report Junk” actually help?

Yes, Apple uses reports to improve spam detection for iMessage. It also deletes the message immediately.

Why do I still get spam texts after blocking?

Spammers often use random numbers or spoofed numbers. Blocking one number doesn’t stop others. Use Filter Unknown Senders and consider a third-party app for broader protection.

Can I block a specific phrase or keyword?

No, iOS doesn’t offer keyword-based blocking. You can only block numbers. Some third-party apps offer keyword filtering, but they require full message access.
