Spotify’s Private Session lets you listen without your activity being saved to your profile, playlists, or the recommendations algorithm. This guide shows you how to turn it on, what it does and doesn’t do, and how to avoid common mistakes—so you can explore new music without leaving a trace.
What You’ll Need
- An active Spotify account (free or Premium)
- The Spotify app on your phone, tablet, or desktop, or access to the web player
- Your login credentials (if you’re not already signed in)
Step-by-Step
- Open Spotify on your device. The steps are nearly identical on mobile (iOS/Android) and desktop (Windows/Mac), with slight differences in the menu location.
- Go to your Library or Home screen. On mobile, tap the “Home” icon (house) at the bottom left. On desktop, click the “Home” icon in the left sidebar.
- Access your profile settings. On mobile, tap the profile icon (a person’s silhouette or your profile picture) at the top left of the Home screen. On desktop, click the arrow next to your profile name in the top right corner, then select “Settings” from the dropdown.
- Find the Private Session option. On mobile, scroll down to the “Social” section. On desktop, look for the “Privacy” section. You’ll see a toggle or a button labeled “Private Session.”
- Turn it on. Toggle the switch to the “on” position. On mobile, you’ll see a small blue lock icon appear next to the search bar at the top of the screen. On desktop, a blue banner will appear at the top of the screen saying “Private Session is on.”
- Listen as usual. Whatever you play during this session won’t be saved to your listening history, won’t affect your Discover Weekly, Release Radar, or other personalized playlists, and won’t be shared with followers.
- Turn it off when done. To end the private session, repeat steps 2-4 and toggle the switch off. The lock icon or banner will disappear. Your listening will resume being tracked normally.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting to turn it off: Private Session doesn’t automatically disable after a certain time. It stays on until you manually turn it off, or until you log out. If you forget, you might wonder why your stats aren’t updating.
- Expecting it to hide your activity from others in real time: Private Session only stops Spotify from recording your activity. If you’re listening on a shared device (like a smart speaker), people nearby can still see what’s playing. It also doesn’t hide your activity from your followers’ “Friend Activity” feed—that feed is based on what you’re currently playing, not your history.
- Thinking it’s the same as an incognito browser: Private Session is not a VPN and doesn’t hide your IP address or location from Spotify. It only affects your listening history and recommendations.
- Using it on the web player incorrectly: The web player (open.spotify.com) has a slightly different interface. The Private Session option is under your profile menu (click the person icon in the top right), not in the main settings menu.
- Assuming it applies to all devices at once: Private Session is per-device. If you turn it on your phone, it doesn’t automatically turn on for your desktop or tablet. You need to enable it on each device where you want privacy.
Tips
- Use it for sensitive or embarrassing listens: Whether it’s a guilty pleasure, a break-up playlist, or a new genre you’re exploring, Private Session keeps it out of your public profile and future recommendations.
- Combine with “Hide from Profile” for playlists: If you create a playlist with songs you don’t want others to see, you can also set that playlist to “Secret” (right-click the playlist, then “Make Secret”). This works alongside Private Session for extra privacy.
- Check your activity after turning it off: Once you turn Private Session off, any listening you did during the session will not appear in your history. If you want to see what you played, you’ll need to check the “Recently Played” list on your device—but that only shows the last few items, and it doesn’t include the full history.
- Use it before a big playlist update: If you’re about to listen to a bunch of tracks you don’t want influencing your Discover Weekly, turn on Private Session beforehand.
- Remember that it’s not a permanent setting: Spotify resets Private Session to “off” when you log out and back in, or when you restart the app on some devices. Always double-check that it’s on if you need it.
Troubleshooting
I can’t find the Private Session option. If you’re on mobile, make sure you’re on the Home screen, not the Search or Library tab. The profile icon is at the top left. On desktop, if you don’t see a “Settings” option, click the arrow next to your profile name first. If you still can’t find it, update your app—older versions may have the option in a different location.
Private Session turns off by itself. This can happen if you switch accounts, log out, or restart the app. Also, if you use Spotify on a TV or game console, those devices may not support Private Session at all. Simply turn it back on if you need it.
My friends still see what I’m listening to. As mentioned, Private Session does not hide your current activity from the Friend Activity feed. It only prevents Spotify from storing your history. If you want to hide your current activity, you’d need to go invisible in the Friend Activity feed (click the “Friend Activity” panel on desktop and select “Private Session” there, or on mobile, go to Settings > Social and toggle “Share My Listening Activity” off).
My Discover Weekly hasn’t changed even after using Private Session. That’s expected—Private Session prevents new listening from affecting your recommendations. If you want to reset your recommendations entirely, you can go to Settings > Privacy and “Clear Recent Listening History.”
Private Session doesn’t work on the web player. It does, but the option is under the profile menu (top right), not the main settings gear. Click your profile picture, then select “Private Session.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Private Session hide my activity from my followers? No. It only stops Spotify from saving your history. Your followers can still see what you’re currently playing in the Friend Activity feed.
Will my Discover Weekly or Release Radar be affected by Private Session? No. Songs you listen to during a Private Session won’t influence any of your personalized playlists.
Can I use Private Session on multiple devices at the same time? Yes, but you need to enable it separately on each device. It’s not a global setting.

How long does a Private Session last? It lasts until you turn it off, log out, or in some cases, restart the app. It doesn’t have a time limit.
Does Private Session work with podcasts? Yes, it also prevents podcast listening from being saved to your history, but it won’t stop podcast episode progress from being saved if you’re in the middle of an episode.
