How to Clear Reading List on iPhone

Guide 10-12981 · Updated · Step by step

If your iPhone’s Safari Reading List is cluttered with articles you’ll never read, clearing it out takes only a few taps. This guide shows you how to remove individual items or wipe the entire list at once, on both iPhone and iPad. No special tools or apps are needed—just your device’s Settings and Safari.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone or iPad with iOS 15 or later (the steps are nearly identical on older versions).
  • Your device unlocked and Safari closed or open—either works.

Step-by-Step

Method 1: Remove One Item at a Time

  1. Open the Safari app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Bookmarks icon (the open book) at the bottom of the screen. On iPad, it’s in the top-left toolbar.
  3. Tap the Reading List tab (the eyeglasses icon) at the top of the pop-up panel. If you don’t see it, tap the clock icon to switch to Reading List view.
  4. You’ll see a list of all saved articles. To delete one, swipe left on the item.
  5. Tap the red Delete button that appears. The article is removed immediately—no confirmation prompt.

Method 2: Clear the Entire Reading List

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Safari.
  3. Scroll down to the Reading List section (it’s near the bottom, under “General”).
  4. Tap Clear Reading List. A confirmation pop-up will appear.
  5. Tap Clear to confirm. All saved articles are deleted instantly.

Method 3: Remove Offline Reading List (Storage Saver)

If you only want to free up storage but keep the list, you can delete the downloaded offline copies:

  1. Go to Settings > Safari.
  2. Tap Clear Reading List—this removes both the list and the offline copies. To keep the list but remove downloads, you’d need to delete each item individually (swipe left in Reading List) and then re-add them later, which isn’t practical. Instead, consider turning off Automatically Save Offline (in the same section) to prevent future downloads.

Common Mistakes

  • Deleting the wrong item: Swiping left on the wrong article removes it permanently. There’s no undo, so double-check the title before swiping.
  • Confusing Reading List with Bookmarks: The Reading List is a separate tab inside the Bookmarks panel. If you tap the bookmark icon and don’t see your saved articles, make sure you’re on the Reading List tab (eyeglasses icon).
  • Expecting iCloud sync to restore: If you have iCloud Safari sync enabled, clearing the list on one device deletes it on all devices signed into the same Apple ID. This is by design, not a glitch.
  • Using the wrong Settings menu: The “Clear Reading List” option is only in the Safari settings, not in the Safari app itself. Some users look for it in the app’s share sheet or bookmarks panel and can’t find it.

Tips

  • Use the share sheet to save articles you actually want: Instead of letting the list pile up, share an article to Reading List only when you plan to read it soon.
  • Organize with folders: If you want to keep some articles but not others, move them to a bookmark folder instead of the Reading List. That way you can clear the Reading List without losing the ones you care about.
  • Check storage usage: Reading List items can consume significant storage if you’ve enabled offline reading. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see how much space Safari is using.
  • Turn off auto-save offline: In Safari settings, disable Automatically Save Offline to prevent future articles from being downloaded to your device.

Troubleshooting

Clear Reading List is grayed out or missing: This happens when the Reading List is empty. If you still see articles in Safari, force-quit Safari (swipe up from the bottom and swipe the Safari card away) and reopen it. Then check the Bookmarks panel again.

Items reappear after clearing: If you have iCloud Safari sync, clearing on one device should clear everywhere. If items reappear, another device (like a Mac or iPad) might be re-syncing them. Turn off Safari sync in iCloud settings, clear the list again, then turn sync back on.

Swipe left doesn’t show Delete: Make sure you’re in the Reading List tab, not the Bookmarks tab. If you’re on the right tab and still no Delete button, try restarting your iPhone or updating iOS.

Can’t find the Settings option: On older iOS versions (iOS 12 and earlier), the path is Settings > Safari > Clear Reading List—same as now. If you’re on iOS 11 or earlier, it’s under Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data, but that’s a different feature. For most users, the direct method works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does clearing my Reading List delete my bookmarks?

No. Reading List and Bookmarks are separate. Clearing the Reading List only removes saved articles, not your bookmarks.

Will clearing the Reading List free up storage space?

Yes, if you have offline reading enabled. Each saved article can take up several megabytes. Clearing the list removes those downloads and frees space.

Can I recover a deleted Reading List item?

No, there’s no undo or trash. Once deleted, the item is gone permanently. You’d need to find the article again and re-save it.

Does clearing the Reading List affect other devices?

If you have iCloud Safari sync enabled, yes—it clears the list on all devices signed into the same Apple ID. If sync is off, only that device is affected.

Why is my Reading List not syncing after I clear it?

Sometimes iCloud sync takes a few minutes. Wait a bit and pull to refresh. If it still doesn’t sync, toggle Safari sync off and on in iCloud settings.

Can I clear only the offline copies without deleting the list?

There’s no built-in option to remove just the downloaded copies while keeping the list. You’d have to delete each item and re-add it later, which defeats the purpose. Alternatively, turn off “Automatically Save Offline” to stop future downloads.
