This guide shows you how to stop random people from adding you to WhatsApp groups, and how to approve or decline every group invitation you receive. You’ll learn the exact settings to change on both iPhone and Android, and what to do if you still get added anyway.
What You’ll Need
- A smartphone with WhatsApp installed (iPhone or Android)
- Your phone number registered with WhatsApp
- At least one contact who can test the setting (optional but helpful)
Step-by-Step
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Tap the three dots menu (Android) or the Settings tab at the bottom right (iPhone).
- Select Settings from the menu.
- Tap Privacy.
- Scroll down and tap Groups.
- You’ll see three options: Everyone, My Contacts, and My Contacts Except….
- Everyone – Anyone with your number can add you to a group without asking.
- My Contacts – Only people saved in your address book can add you directly.
- My Contacts Except… – Same as above, but you can exclude specific contacts (they will need to send an invite instead).
- Choose My Contacts or My Contacts Except… depending on how strict you want to be.
- If you picked My Contacts Except…, select the contacts you want to block from adding you, then tap the checkmark or done button.
- Once saved, anyone not allowed to add you directly will instead see a prompt to send you an invitation link. You’ll receive a chat message with a preview of the group and an Invite button. Tap it to join, or ignore it to decline.
Common Mistakes
- Choosing “Everyone” and forgetting to change it – The default is often “Everyone,” so if you haven’t changed it, anyone can add you.
- Assuming “My Contacts” blocks all strangers – If someone has your number saved in their phone but you don’t have theirs, they are still considered a contact (from their side) and can add you. This setting is based on the person doing the adding, not you.
- Not updating after changing your number – If you get a new phone number, your privacy settings reset to defaults. Re-check this setting after any SIM or number change.
- Thinking the setting applies to existing groups – This only controls new group additions. If you’re already in a group, members can still add you to other groups unless they are restricted.
Tips
- Use My Contacts Except… to block specific people (like an ex or a colleague) from adding you to groups, while still allowing everyone else in your contacts.
- If you receive an unwanted group invite, you can simply ignore it – the sender won’t know you declined unless you explicitly tell them.
- For extra control, you can also adjust who can see your Last Seen, Profile Photo, and About in the same Privacy menu. This reduces the chances of strangers finding you.
- If you’re already in a group and want to leave silently, tap the group name, scroll down, and select Exit Group. Other members will see a system message that you left, but they won’t be notified individually.
- To prevent someone from adding you to groups via a link, you can’t disable link-based joining entirely, but you can avoid clicking on unknown links. The group invite setting above only applies to direct adds, not links.
Troubleshooting
I changed the setting but I’m still being added.
If you set it to My Contacts and still get added, the person adding you probably has your number saved in their contacts. Remember, the setting is based on the adder’s contact list, not yours. To block that specific person, use My Contacts Except… and select them.
I don’t see the Groups option in Privacy.
Make sure your WhatsApp is updated to the latest version. The Groups privacy setting was introduced in 2019, so if you’re on an older version, update from the App Store or Google Play Store.
I get an invitation but there’s no “Invite” button.
Sometimes the invitation appears as a regular chat message with a group preview. Tap on the message to open it – the Invite button should be there. If not, ask the sender to resend the invite.
I accidentally declined an invite and want to join.
There’s no way to retrieve a declined invite. Ask the group admin to send you a new invitation link or add you again (if they’re allowed).
I want to block someone from ever adding me again.
Beyond the My Contacts Except… setting, you can also block the person entirely. Go to their chat, tap the contact name, scroll down, and select Block. Blocked contacts cannot add you to groups or send you messages.
Does this setting affect existing groups?
No. It only applies to new group additions. If you’re already in a group, you’ll stay in it unless you leave. To leave a group, open the group, tap the group name, and select Exit Group.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I stop someone from adding me to a group without blocking them?
A: Yes. Use the My Contacts Except… setting and select that person. They will then have to send you an invite, which you can decline.
Q: If I choose “My Contacts”, can a non-contact add me via a group link?
A: Yes. The setting only affects direct adds. If someone shares a group link with you and you click it, you’ll join the group regardless of your privacy setting.
Q: Will people know I changed my group privacy setting?
A: No. WhatsApp doesn’t notify anyone when you change this setting. They’ll only see an “Invite” button instead of being able to add you directly.
Q: Can I set different group privacy for different contacts?
A: The My Contacts Except… option lets you exclude specific contacts, but you can’t create multiple tiers (e.g., allow some, block others, and allow everyone else). It’s a simple yes/no per contact.
Q: Does this setting work on WhatsApp Web or Desktop?
A: No. The group privacy setting can only be changed on the mobile app. However, the setting applies to your account across all devices.
Q: If I decline an invite, can the sender see that I declined?
A: No. The sender only sees that you haven’t joined. They won’t get a notification saying you declined.
