HEVC Video to Telegram Profile: iPhone Guide

Guide 10-8980 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to convert an iPhone HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) video into a format that Telegram accepts for your profile picture. Telegram requires profile videos to be in MP4 format with H.264 encoding, which is different from the HEVC (H.265) files your iPhone produces by default. By the end, you’ll have a short, looping video that uploads smoothly and displays correctly on your profile.

What You’ll Need

  • Your iPhone with the video you want to use (already recorded or saved in your Photos app)
  • A computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) – this makes the conversion process much easier and more reliable than on the phone itself
  • Free, open-source video converter software – we recommend HandBrake (available for all major operating systems) or VLC Media Player (also free and cross-platform)
  • An internet connection to download the software if you don’t have it yet

Step-by-Step

  1. Transfer the video to your computer. Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable, or use AirDrop to send the video to a Mac. On Windows, open the Photos app or File Explorer and import the video. On Mac, use the Image Capture app or simply drag it from the Photos app to your Desktop.
  2. Install the conversion software. If you haven’t already, download and install HandBrake from its official website (handbrake.fr) or VLC from videolan.org. Both are free and safe.
  3. Open the video in HandBrake. Launch HandBrake, click “Open Source (or drag and drop your video file onto the window), and select the video you transferred.
  4. Choose the right preset. In HandBrake, look for the “Presetsâ€ panel on the right side. Choose “Fast 1080p30â€ or “Very Fast 1080p30â€ – these presets automatically set the output to MP4 with H.264 encoding, which is exactly what Telegram needs. If you’re using VLC, skip to step 6.
  5. Adjust the output settings (optional but recommended). In HandBrake, under the “Summaryâ€ tab, ensure the “Formatâ€ is set to “MP4â€. Under “Videoâ€ tab, set “Video Encoderâ€ to “H.264 (x264)â€ and “Framerateâ€ to “30â€ or “60â€ (Telegram supports both, but 30 is safer for smaller file size). You can also reduce the resolution to 720p or lower if the video is very large – profile pictures display small, so high resolution isn’t necessary.
  6. Start the conversion. Click the “Start Encode button in HandBrake. In VLC, go to Media > Convert/Save, add your video, click “Convert/Save, choose a destination, and under “Profile select “Video – H.264 + MP3 (MP4). Then click “Start. Wait for the progress bar to finish.
  7. Find the converted file. Once done, locate the new MP4 file on your computer. It should be in the folder you specified (HandBrake defaults to the same folder as the source).
  8. Transfer the converted video back to your iPhone. Use AirDrop (Mac to iPhone), email it to yourself, or use a cloud service like iCloud Drive or Google Drive. Save it to your Photos app.
  9. Set it as your Telegram profile video. Open Telegram on your iPhone, go to Settings (the gear icon), tap your profile photo, then tap the camera icon or “Set New Photo/Video. Choose the converted MP4 from your Photos, adjust the start and end points if needed (Telegram lets you select a 2–3 second segment), and tap “Save.

Common Mistakes

  • Not converting to H.264. If you just rename the file or use a converter that keeps HEVC, Telegram will reject it or show a black screen. Always verify the output codec is H.264.
  • Video too long. Telegram only allows a short loop (typically up to 2–3 seconds). If your video is longer, you must trim it in Telegram’s editor after selecting it.
  • File too large. Telegram has a file size limit for profile videos (usually around 2 MB). If your converted file is bigger, reduce the resolution or bitrate in HandBrake (set “Qualityâ€ to RF 28 or higher) to shrink it.
  • Using the wrong container. Some converters output .mov or .mkv. Telegram needs .mp4. Make sure the output format is MP4.

Tips

  • Keep it short and simple. A 2-second clip loops seamlessly. Use a clip with minimal motion for best visual clarity.
  • Use a square or portrait crop. Profile pictures display in a circle, so center your subject. Telegram allows you to crop after selecting the video.
  • Reduce file size aggressively. For a profile pic, a resolution of 640×640 or even 480×480 is plenty. In HandBrake, you can set the “Resolutionâ€ to a custom value under the “Dimensionsâ€ tab.
  • Check the output before uploading. Play the converted MP4 on your computer to ensure it looks and sounds correct (sound is optional – Telegram profile videos are silent, but the file may still include audio).
  • Use the Telegram desktop app for initial upload. If you have Telegram Desktop, you can set the profile video from your computer directly, which sometimes handles the conversion better. But the steps above work fine for iPhone.

Troubleshooting

Telegram says “File not supported or “Invalid format. This almost always means the video is still HEVC or in a non-MP4 container. Re-check the conversion settings: make sure the encoder is H.264 and the container is MP4. If you used VLC, try HandBrake instead – it gives more control.

The video uploads but shows a black screen. This can happen if the video has an unusual color profile or if the bitrate is too high. In HandBrake, try setting “Video Encoder to “H.264 (x264) and “Quality to a lower value (e.g., RF 30) to reduce bitrate. Also, ensure “Color Primaries and “Transfer are set to “BT.709 under the “Video tab’s “Color settings.

The video plays but the loop is jumpy. Your clip may be too long or has a lot of motion. Trim it in Telegram to a shorter segment (1–2 seconds) and choose a moment with less movement.

The file is still too large. Reduce the resolution further (e.g., 320×320) and increase the RF value (e.g., RF 35) in HandBrake. You can also use a free online compressor like Clipchamp or CloudConvert, but be cautious with privacy – use a trusted service.

No sound after conversion. That’s normal – Telegram profile videos are silent. If you want sound, you can keep it, but it won’t play in the profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my iPhone video not work directly on Telegram? iPhones record videos in HEVC (H.265) to save space. Telegram’s profile video feature expects H.264 encoding, which is an older, more universally compatible codec. Converting the file solves this.

Can I do this entirely on my iPhone without a computer? Yes, but it’s harder. You can use apps like “Video Converterâ€ or “Media Converterâ€ from the App Store, but many are paid or have ads. The computer method is free and more reliable.

What is the maximum length for a Telegram profile video? Telegram allows a loop of up to 2–3 seconds. When you select a video, you’ll see a slider to pick the start and end points – keep it short.

Does the video need to be silent? No, but Telegram profile videos are muted by default. You can leave audio in the file, but it won’t be heard.

Will converting reduce video quality? Yes, some quality loss is inevitable, but for a small profile picture, the difference is negligible. Use a moderate RF value (like 24–28) to balance quality and file size.

Can I use a GIF instead? Telegram also supports animated GIFs as profile videos. If you have a GIF, you can upload it directly – no conversion needed. But if you have an HEVC video, converting to MP4 is the way.
