Delete or Disable a Discord Account: Step-by-Step

Guide 10-16712 · Updated · Step by step

This guide walks you through both options for leaving Discord: disabling your account (temporary, reversible) and deleting it (permanent). You’ll need access to your account credentials and, for deletion, a way to receive email verification. The steps work on desktop and mobile browsers, as well as the Discord app.

What You’ll Need

  • Your Discord login email and password (or an active session on the app/browser)
  • Access to the email address linked to your Discord account (for deletion confirmation)
  • Your phone number if you have two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled

Step-by-Step

Disabling Your Account (Temporary)

  1. Open Discord on your desktop app or browser at discord.com.
  2. Click the gear icon (User Settings) at the bottom left, next to your username.
  3. Scroll down in the left sidebar and select My Account.
  4. Click the Disable Account button (it appears in the Account Management section, below your email and phone number).
  5. A confirmation popup appears. Click Disable again.
  6. Enter your password when prompted, then click Disable Account.
  7. Your account is now disabled. You can log back in anytime to reactivate it.

Deleting Your Account (Permanent)

  1. Go to the Discord deletion page directly at discord.com/safety or navigate through: User Settings → My Account → Delete Account (the red text at the bottom).
  2. Click Delete Account on the confirmation screen.
  3. You’ll see a warning about losing all data. Click Delete again.
  4. Enter your password and, if you have 2FA enabled, your authentication code.
  5. Discord sends a confirmation link to your registered email. Open that email and click the Delete Account button inside.
  6. Your account is now scheduled for deletion. It will be permanently removed after 14–30 days.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing disable with delete: Disabling is like a pause; you can come back anytime. Deleting is final and removes all messages, servers, and data.
  • Skipping the email verification: If you don’t click the link in the email, the deletion request expires and your account stays active.
  • Deleting instead of disabling: If you only need a break, choose disable. Once deleted, your username and data are gone forever.
  • Forgetting about server ownership: If you own a server, you must transfer ownership to someone else before deletion, or the server will be deleted too.
  • Using the mobile app for deletion: The Discord mobile app does not offer the delete option in all versions; use a desktop browser for the full menu.

Tips

  • Before deleting, consider downloading your data. Go to User Settings → My Account → Request Data to get a copy of your messages and account info.
  • If you’re disabling to reduce distractions, you can also just log out or delete the app from your phone—less drastic and faster to undo.
  • If you own servers, transfer ownership first: Server Settings → Members → right-click the new owner → Transfer Ownership.
  • Write down any important messages or friend codes before deletion—you won’t be able to recover them.
  • If you’re worried about someone else using your account, change your password and enable 2FA before disabling or deleting.

Troubleshooting

I don’t see the Delete Account button. Make sure you’re on a desktop browser (not the mobile app). If it’s still missing, your account may be underage (under 13) or restricted—contact Discord support.

I didn’t receive the confirmation email. Check your spam/junk folder. Wait a few minutes. If it still doesn’t arrive, try the request again. Ensure the email shown is the one you actually use.

My password isn’t accepted. Use the “Forgot Password” link to reset it, then retry the deletion process.

I have 2FA but lost my phone. You’ll need to use your backup codes (given when you set up 2FA). Without them, you must contact Discord support with proof of identity.

I disabled my account but want to come back. Simply log in with your email and password—your account will reactivate instantly.

I deleted my account but changed my mind. You have a grace period of 14–30 days. Log in again during that time to cancel the deletion. After that, it’s irreversible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s the difference between disabling and deleting?
A: Disabling is temporary and reversible—your profile, messages, and servers stay intact. Deleting permanently removes all data, and you can’t get it back.

Q: Can I delete my Discord account from the mobile app?
A: The mobile app doesn’t always show the delete option. Use a desktop browser (discord.com) for the full settings menu.

Q: How long does deletion take?
A: After you confirm via email, Discord schedules the deletion. It takes 14 to 30 days to fully process, during which you can cancel by logging in.

Q: Will my messages disappear from servers I was in?
A: Your account data is removed, but messages you sent may remain in servers as “Deleted User” with a generic avatar. Server owners can delete them manually.

Q: What happens to my servers if I delete my account?
A: If you own a server and don’t transfer ownership, the server will be deleted along with your account. Transfer ownership first to prevent this.

Q: Can I reuse my email or username after deletion?
A: Yes, after the deletion is complete, the email becomes available for a new account. Usernames may be reused, but it’s not guaranteed.
