How to Empty Your Gmail Inbox (Fast & Free)

Guide 10-12481 · Updated · Step by step

If your Gmail inbox is overflowing with thousands of unread messages, newsletters, and old conversations, this guide will help you clear it out completely. You’ll learn how to delete or archive everything in bulk, using only Gmail’s built-in tools — no third-party apps or paid services required. By the end, you’ll have a clean, empty inbox (or at least a much more manageable one) in under 30 minutes.

What You’ll Need

  • A Gmail account (free or paid Workspace)
  • Access to Gmail in a web browser (desktop recommended, but mobile works too)
  • Patience — bulk operations can take a few minutes if you have tens of thousands of emails

Step-by-Step

  1. Decide: delete or archive? Deleting permanently removes emails (they go to Trash for 30 days, then are gone forever). Archiving removes them from your inbox but keeps them searchable in “All Mail. If you want to truly empty your inbox, choose delete. If you just want it to look empty, archive.
  2. Open Gmail in a browser and sign in. This works best on a computer; the mobile app has the same options but the interface is more cramped.
  3. Click the “Inbox label on the left sidebar. Make sure you’re viewing all emails, not just unread ones. If you see “1–50 of 12,345 at the top, you’re in the right place.
  4. Select all emails on the current page by clicking the checkbox at the top-left of the email list (above the first email). This selects all 50 emails on that page.
  5. Click the “Select all conversations that match this search link that appears in the blue bar above the list. It usually says something like “Select all 12,345 conversations in Inbox. This is the key step — it selects every email in your inbox, not just the visible ones.
  6. Click the trash can icon (for delete) or the archive icon (a folder with a down arrow, for archive) in the toolbar above the email list. If you chose delete, Gmail may ask you to confirm. Click “OK to proceed.
  7. Wait for Gmail to process. Depending on how many emails you have, this can take from a few seconds to a few minutes. A progress bar or “Deleting… message may appear. Do not close the tab.
  8. Check your inbox. It should now show “0 conversations or a very low number. If you deleted, remember that emails sit in Trash for 30 days — you can empty Trash manually by clicking “Trash on the left, then “Empty Trash now at the top.
  9. Repeat if necessary. If new emails arrive while you’re working, or if you have more than one page of results, repeat steps 3–7.
  10. Optional: Set up filters to prevent future clutter. Go to Settings → See all settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses → Create a new filter. You can automatically delete or archive emails from certain senders, or skip the inbox for newsletters.

Common Mistakes

  • Only selecting the visible page. If you don’t click the “Select all conversations that match this search link, you’ll only delete 50 emails at a time. This is the #1 mistake.
  • Forgetting that “Inbox includes categories. If you use tabs like “Promotions or “Social, those are still part of your inbox. The select-all method covers them, but if you only click on a tab, you’ll only select that tab’s emails.
  • Deleting important emails by accident. Once you delete, you have 30 days to recover from Trash, but after that they’re gone. Double-check that you’re not deleting anything you need.
  • Using the mobile app for bulk actions. The mobile app doesn’t have the “Select all conversations link, so you can only delete 50 at a time. Use a desktop browser.

Tips

  • Search before you delete. If you only want to delete old emails, use a search like older_than:1y to select emails older than a year, then follow the same steps. This keeps recent emails intact.
  • Use “is:unread to target unread messages. If you only want to clear unread emails, search is:unread before selecting all.
  • Empty the Trash. After deleting, go to Trash and click “Empty Trash now to free up storage immediately (otherwise it takes 30 days).
  • Create a filter for newsletters. If you subscribe to many newsletters, create a filter that automatically skips the inbox and labels them as “Newsletters. You can read them later without cluttering your inbox.
  • Use “Mark all as read first. If you want to keep emails but get rid of the unread badge, select all and click the envelope icon to mark them read. This doesn’t empty your inbox, but it makes it look cleaner.
  • Consider archiving instead of deleting. If you’re worried about losing data, archive everything. Your inbox will be empty, but you can still find any email via search.

Troubleshooting

  • “Select all conversations link doesn’t appear. This link only shows when you have more than one page of results. If you have fewer than 50 emails, just select the checkbox and delete. If you have more, make sure you’re on the Inbox label, not a search result.
  • Gmail says “No conversations selected. This happens if you haven’t clicked the “Select all link after checking the box. Re-check the box and look for the blue bar.
  • Deleting takes forever. If you have 100,000+ emails, it can take several minutes. Be patient. If it seems stuck, refresh the page and check if the count has decreased. If not, try again.
  • Emails reappear after deletion. This can happen if you have multiple devices syncing, or if you have a filter that is re-adding emails. Check your filters and remove any that forward or label incoming mail to Inbox.
  • Storage still full after deleting. Deleting emails frees storage, but only after they’re purged from Trash. Empty the Trash manually. Also, large attachments in “All Mail may still take space — use has:attachment larger:10M to find and delete those.
  • Can’t delete because of “Undo. Gmail’s “Undo window may pop up after deletion. If you accidentally click Undo, the emails return. Just repeat the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will deleting all my emails free up storage?

Yes, but only after they are permanently removed from Trash. Emptying Trash immediately will free up space right away.

What’s the difference between deleting and archiving?

Deleting moves emails to Trash and eventually deletes them forever. Archiving removes them from your inbox but keeps them in “All Mail where they’re still searchable.

Can I empty my inbox on the Gmail app?

You can delete emails one page at a time (50 at a time), but the “Select all conversations link is not available in the mobile app. Use a desktop browser for bulk deletion.

How do I recover an email I accidentally deleted?

Go to the Trash label. Select the email and click “Move to Inbox (or “Restore). You have 30 days from deletion before it’s permanently removed.

Will deleting all emails affect my Google Account?

No. It only affects your Gmail messages. Your contacts, Drive files, and other Google services are unaffected.

Is there a way to automatically delete emails from specific senders?

Yes. Create a filter: Settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses → Create a new filter. Enter the sender’s email, then choose “Delete it as the action.
