How to Find a Person or Pet in Google Photos

Guide 10-14212 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to use Google Photos’ built-in face and pet recognition to quickly locate photos of a specific person or animal. You’ll learn how to enable the feature, search by name, and manage the face groups that Google automatically creates. No prior setup is required, but you must be signed in to your Google account and have photos backed up to Google Photos.

What You’ll Need

  • A Google account with photos stored in Google Photos (either on the web or the mobile app).
  • Face grouping enabled in your Google Photos settings (it’s usually on by default, but we’ll show you how to check).
  • At least a few clear photos of the person or pet you’re looking for.

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Google Photos – Go to photos.google.com in a web browser, or open the Google Photos app on your Android or iOS device.
  2. Check that face grouping is enabled – Click your profile photo (top right on web, top right on mobile) and select Photos settings. Under Group similar faces, make sure the toggle is on. If it’s off, turn it on and wait a few hours for Google to process your library.
  3. Use the search bar – At the top of the main screen, tap or click the search bar. You’ll see a row of circular thumbnails labeled People and Pets. These are your face groups.
  4. Browse the face groups – Scroll through the circles. Each one represents a distinct person or pet that Google has identified. Tap on a circle to see all photos of that individual.
  5. Search by name – If you’ve named the face group, you can type that name directly into the search bar. For example, typing “Max” will show photos of the person or pet you’ve labeled as Max.
  6. Refine your search – Once you’re viewing a person’s or pet’s page, you can use the search bar again to add more context, like “Max beach” or “Max 2023” to narrow down results.
  7. Add a name to a face group – If you see a face group without a name, tap on it, then click Add a name (web) or the pencil icon (mobile). Type the name and confirm. This makes future searches easier.
  8. Use filters – After searching for a person or pet, tap the filter icon (sliders) to further refine by date, location, or type of photo (photos, videos, etc.).

Common Mistakes

  • Face grouping is disabled – If you don’t see any face groups, it’s likely the feature is turned off. Check your settings as described in step 2.
  • Searching before grouping is complete – For large libraries, it can take several hours or even days for Google to process all faces. If you search too soon, results will be incomplete.
  • Expecting perfection – Face recognition is not 100% accurate. It may miss some photos (especially if the face is small, blurry, or turned away) and may occasionally include photos of someone who looks similar.
  • Not naming groups – If you don’t name a face group, you can’t search for it by name. You’ll have to manually browse the circles.
  • Using the wrong account – Make sure you’re signed in to the Google account that contains the photos you’re searching for.

Tips

  • Name your face groups – It takes just a few seconds and saves time later. You can also merge duplicate groups if Google creates two for the same person.
  • Use the “People” tab on mobile – In the app, tap the Search tab at the bottom, then tap People to see all face groups in one place.
  • Combine with other search terms – You can type “person name + location” or “pet name + year” to quickly filter results.
  • Be patient with large libraries – If you have tens of thousands of photos, give Google a day or two to finish grouping. Check back later.
  • Use the web version for bulk editing – The web interface makes it easier to rename or merge multiple face groups at once.

Troubleshooting

  • No face groups appear at all – Verify that face grouping is enabled in settings. If it is, wait 24-48 hours. If still nothing, your photos may not have clear faces (e.g., all group shots from behind). Try searching for a specific person’s name if you’ve previously tagged them.
  • Face groups are there, but a specific person is missing – This can happen if that person appears in very few photos, or the photos are low quality. Try searching by a name you’ve used before, or browse the “People” tab to see if there’s an unnamed group that looks like them.
  • Wrong photos are grouped together – Tap on the face group, then select the photos that don’t belong and remove them (the three-dot menu > Remove from group). You can also merge two groups by selecting one, then going to the other and choosing Merge with.
  • Search by name returns no results – Make sure you’ve actually named the face group. If you haven’t, search for the person’s name won’t work. Also, try clearing the search bar and just typing the name without any other filters.
  • Pets aren’t recognized – Pet recognition works best with dogs and cats. If your pet is a different species, or the photos are too dark or distant, it may not create a group. You can still manually create a pet album and search within that.
  • Feature not available in your region or on your device – Face grouping is not available in all countries due to privacy laws. If you don’t see the option in settings, it may not be offered in your location. In that case, you can’t use this feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google Photos recognize pets automatically?

Yes, Google Photos can automatically group photos of dogs and cats, and sometimes other animals, but it’s most reliable for dogs and cats. You may need to manually start a group for other pets.

Can I search for a person by name if I haven’t labeled them?

No, you must first assign a name to a face group. Until you do, you can only browse the face group circles, not search by name.

Why does Google Photos show the same person in two different groups?

This can happen if the person looks very different in certain photos (e.g., glasses, beard, aging). You can merge the two groups by selecting one, then choosing “Merge with” and selecting the other.

Is face recognition available in all countries?

No, due to privacy regulations, face grouping is not available in all regions. If you don’t see the option in your settings, it’s not available in your country.

Can I use face recognition on photos that are not backed up?

No, Google Photos only processes photos that are backed up to your Google account. Photos stored only on your device won’t be included in face groups.

Does face recognition work with videos?

Yes, Google Photos can recognize faces in videos as well, and they will appear in the face group’s results, though less consistently than in still photos.
