This guide shows you how to find both the local (private) IP address your iPhone uses on your Wi-Fi or cellular network, and the public IP address that the wider internet sees. You’ll need your iPhone and, for the local IP, a connection to a Wi-Fi network. No other tools are required.
What You’ll Need
- Your iPhone (any model running a recent iOS version)
- An active Wi-Fi connection (to see the local IP address)
- A web browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.) for checking the public IP
Step-by-Step
Find Your Local (Private) IP Address on Wi-Fi
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone. It’s the gray gear icon.
- Tap Wi-Fi near the top of the Settings menu.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on and you’re connected to a network. You’ll see a checkmark next to the network name.
- Tap the blue (i) icon to the right of the network name you’re connected to.
- Scroll down to the IPV4 ADDRESS section. The number next to IP Address is your iPhone’s local IP address. It typically looks like 192.168.1.5 or 10.0.0.12.
Find Your Local IP Address on Cellular Data
- Open Settings and tap Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions).
- Tap About at the top of the Cellular screen.
- Scroll down to find IP Address. This shows the IP address assigned to your cellular connection. Note that this is often a carrier-grade NAT address, not a unique public IP.
Find Your Public IP Address
- Open any web browser on your iPhone, such as Safari.
- Go to a website that displays your public IP, like whatismyip.com or simply search “what is my IP” in Google or Bing.
- The page will show your public IP address. This is the address that websites and online services see when you connect to them.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing local and public IP addresses. The local IP (like 192.168.x.x) is only used within your home network. The public IP is what the rest of the internet sees. They are almost always different.
- Looking at the wrong section in Settings. The IP address is not shown on the main Wi-Fi screen; you must tap the (i) icon next to the connected network.
- Checking while not connected to Wi-Fi. If you’re on cellular, the Wi-Fi section won’t show an IP address. You need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network to see its assigned IP.
- Using a VPN without realizing it. If you have a VPN active, the public IP shown will be the VPN server’s IP, not your actual ISP-assigned IP.
Tips
- Your local IP address can change frequently, especially if you reconnect to Wi-Fi or restart your router. It’s not a permanent identifier.
- To see all your network details at once, you can go to Settings > Wi-Fi > (i) and look for Subnet Mask, Router, and DNS—these are useful for troubleshooting network issues.
- If you need a static IP address for port forwarding or other advanced setups, you’ll typically set that up in your router’s admin panel, not on the iPhone itself.
- For quick access, add a bookmark in Safari to a public IP checker site.
Troubleshooting
I don’t see an IP Address field in Wi-Fi settings.
Make sure you’re actually connected to a Wi-Fi network. If you’re not, there will be no (i) icon to tap. Also, try toggling Wi-Fi off and on again in Control Center.
The IP address shown is 169.254.x.x.
This is an Automatic Private IP Address (APIPA), which means your iPhone couldn’t get an IP from the router. This usually indicates a Wi-Fi connection problem. Try restarting your router, forgetting the network (Settings > Wi-Fi > (i) > Forget This Network) and reconnecting, or resetting your network settings (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings).
My public IP shows a different location than where I am.
This is normal. Your public IP is assigned by your ISP and the geolocation database might be outdated, or you might be using a VPN. It doesn’t necessarily reflect your exact physical location.
I’m on cellular and can’t find the IP address.
On some carriers, the Cellular > About page may not show an IP address. In that case, use the public IP method to see the IP your carrier assigns, or contact your carrier for details.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 is the traditional format (e.g., 192.168.1.1) and is still the most common. IPv6 is a newer format with a much longer address (e.g., 2001:db8::1) designed to solve IPv4 address exhaustion. Your iPhone may show both; the IPv4 address is what most people need.
Is my iPhone’s IP address the same as my computer’s?
No. Each device on your network gets its own unique local IP address. Your public IP address is shared by all devices on your home network.
Can I change my iPhone’s IP address?
Yes. The easiest way is to toggle Wi-Fi off and on, or restart your iPhone. Your router will usually assign a new IP. You can also set a static IP in Settings > Wi-Fi > (i) > Configure IP, but this is rarely needed.
Does my IP address change when I use cellular data?
Yes. Your cellular carrier assigns an IP address from their pool, and it can change as you move between towers or reconnect. It’s typically not the same as your home Wi-Fi public IP.
Why would I need to know my IP address?
Common reasons include setting up a home server or security camera, troubleshooting network connection issues, configuring port forwarding, or allowing remote access to your phone from another device.
Is it safe to share my IP address?
Your public IP address is not highly sensitive, but it can reveal your general location and ISP. Avoid sharing it publicly if you’re concerned about privacy. Your local IP (like 192.168.x.x) is only visible within your own network and is safe to share with someone on the same network.
