Fix iOS 15 Live Text Not Working: 10 Steps

Guide 10-28211 · Updated · Step by step

Live Text in iOS 15 lets you copy, call, look up, and translate text that appears inside photos and screenshots. When it stops working, the feature either doesn’t trigger at all or the text isn’t selectable. This guide walks through the most common causes and fixes, from simple toggles to full resets, so you can get the feature back without losing your data.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone or iPad running iOS 15 or later (check in Settings > General > About)
  • Your Apple ID password (for signing out/in if needed)
  • Wi-Fi or cellular connection for downloading updates
  • About 15 minutes of uninterrupted time

Step-by-Step

  1. Check device compatibility. Live Text requires an iPhone XS, XR, or newer, or an iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd gen), iPad Pro 11-inch, iPad Air (3rd gen), iPad (8th gen), or iPad mini (5th gen) or later. If your device is older, the feature simply won’t appear.
  2. Verify iOS version. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If iOS 15.1 or later is available, install it. Early iOS 15.0 builds had several Live Text bugs that were fixed in 15.1 and 15.2.
  3. Turn on Live Text in Settings. Open Settings > General > Language & Region and make sure Live Text is toggled on. If it’s already on, toggle it off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
  4. Restart your iPhone. Press and hold the side button and either volume button until the power off slider appears. Drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. This clears temporary glitches that can disable the feature.
  5. Check the photo itself. Live Text only works on photos with clear, high-contrast text. Blurry, angled, or heavily filtered images often fail. Try a screenshot of a webpage or a photo of a printed document in good lighting.
  6. Open the photo in full screen. In the Photos app, tap the image to make it full screen. The Live Text icon (three horizontal lines with a small rectangle) should appear in the bottom-right corner. If you don’t see it, the photo isn’t eligible.
  7. Use the correct gesture. Instead of the icon, you can press and hold on a word in the photo. If the text is detected, the word will highlight and the selection handles appear. If nothing happens, the image isn’t being scanned.
  8. Reset all settings. If the feature still fails, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This won’t delete your photos, apps, or data, but it will reset Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, and accessibility settings. You’ll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords afterward.
  9. Sign out of Apple ID and back in. Go to Settings > your name > Sign Out. This may prompt you to keep a copy of your data on the device. After signing out, restart the phone, then sign back in. This refreshes system services that can get stuck.
  10. Restore from a backup or update via computer. As a last resort, back up your iPhone, then use a computer to restore it to factory settings and set it up as new. If Live Text works after that, restore your backup. If it still doesn’t work, the issue is likely hardware-related.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a photo with handwritten text. Live Text only works with printed or typed text, not handwriting. It also struggles with stylized fonts, neon signs, and text on patterned backgrounds.
  • Expecting it to work on screenshots of videos. Live Text works on still images only. You can pause a video and take a screenshot, but it won’t scan the moving video frames.
  • Checking the wrong region settings. Live Text requires the device language to be set to a supported language (English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and others). If your language isn’t supported, the feature won’t appear in Settings.
  • Forgetting to update individual apps. Live Text also works in the Camera app and in apps like Notes and Safari. If the Photos app works but Safari doesn’t, update the app or restart it.
  • Assuming all photos are scanned instantly. The on-device scanning takes a second or two. If you tap the icon immediately after opening a photo, it may not have finished processing. Wait a moment.

Tips

  • Use Live Text in the Camera app directly. Point your camera at a sign or document. When the yellow Live Text frame appears, tap the scan icon to select the text without taking a photo.
  • Copy text to Notes. When you copy Live Text, paste it into Notes to edit it. This is handy for phone numbers or addresses you want to save.
  • Translate text in photos. After selecting text, tap the Translate option (if available in your region) to get an instant translation.
  • Use the lookup feature. Select a word or phrase and tap Look Up to get dictionary definitions, web results, and related info without leaving the photo.
  • Keep your device storage free. Live Text uses on-device machine learning models. If storage is nearly full, the system may disable background processing. Delete unused apps or old videos to free up space.
  • Try a different photo app. If the built-in Photos app fails, take a screenshot of the same image and try selecting text from the screenshot. This sometimes forces a fresh scan.

Troubleshooting

Live Text icon is missing from all photos. This usually means the feature is off or the device is unsupported. Double-check Settings > General > Language & Region > Live Text. If it’s on, restart the phone. If that fails, check your device model against the compatibility list.

Text is selectable but copying doesn’t work. This is often a temporary clipboard glitch. Copy something else first (like a note), then try again. If that fails, restart the phone and try again.

Live Text works in Photos but not in Camera. The Camera app needs to detect a stable, well-lit scene. Make sure the text is in focus and the camera isn’t shaking. If it still doesn’t appear, close the Camera app and reopen it.

Live Text worked before but stopped after an update. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and check for a newer iOS version. Apple often releases point updates to fix regressions. If you’re already on the latest, try the Reset All Settings step.

Feature works on some photos but not others. This is expected behavior. Live Text requires clear, printed text. Photos with watermarks, shadows, or extreme angles may fail. Try cropping the photo to focus on the text area.

After Reset All Settings, Wi-Fi passwords are gone. This is normal. Reconnect to your Wi-Fi networks. Your photos, messages, and apps remain intact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Live Text available in all countries? No. Live Text requires the device region to be set to a supported country. Apple lists supported regions on its iOS 15 feature page. If your region isn’t listed, the feature won’t appear even if the language is supported.

Does Live Text work with handwritten notes? No. Live Text only recognizes printed or typed text. It cannot read cursive or block handwriting. For handwritten notes, use the Notes app’s built-in handwriting recognition instead.

Can I use Live Text on videos? Not directly. You can pause a video and take a screenshot, then use Live Text on the screenshot. There’s no way to scan text from a moving video frame in real-time.

Why does Live Text work on my friend’s iPhone but not mine? The most likely reasons are device model, iOS version, or region settings. Compare your iOS version and Language & Region settings with your friend’s. If they match, try a restart.

Does Live Text work offline? Yes. All text recognition happens on-device using the Neural Engine. No internet connection is needed for copying or looking up text. Translation and web lookup require a connection.

Will Live Text drain my battery? No. The scanning happens only when you open a photo or point the camera at text. It doesn’t run continuously in the background. If you notice battery drain, it’s likely from another app or setting.
