Apple Music: Follow, Unfollow, or Remove Followers on iPhone

Guide 10-13101 · Updated · Step by step

Apple Music’s social features let you see what your friends are listening to, share playlists, and build a profile. On iPhone, you can control who you follow, who follows you, and even remove unwanted followers. This guide walks you through each action step by step.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone with iOS 15 or later (the steps are essentially the same on older versions, but menus may look slightly different).
  • An active Apple Music subscription (free accounts can’t follow or be followed).
  • Your Apple ID signed in and iCloud Music Library enabled (Settings > Music > Sync Library).

Step-by-Step

How to Follow Someone

  1. Open the Apple Music app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Listen Now tab at the bottom left.
  3. Scroll down to the Social section. Here you’ll see a row of circular profile pictures labeled “Friends Are Listening To.”
  4. Tap the See All link next to that row to view all your friends’ activity.
  5. If you see a profile you’re not following, tap the + Follow button next to their name. The button will change to Following.
  6. To find new people, tap the Search tab (magnifying glass), then type a name in the search bar. Below the results, tap People, then tap the Follow button next to the person you want.

How to Unfollow Someone

  1. Open Apple Music and go to the Listen Now tab.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. On your profile page, you’ll see a list of people you’re following under Following. Tap See All to view the full list.
  4. Find the person you want to unfollow and tap the Following button next to their name. It will change to Follow, and you’ll stop seeing their activity.

How to Remove a Follower

  1. Open Apple Music and tap Listen Now.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. On your profile, look for the Followers section and tap See All.
  4. You’ll see a list of people who follow you. Next to each name is a Remove button (or a person icon with a slash).
  5. Tap Remove next to the person you want to remove. They will be removed from your followers list immediately, and they will no longer see your activity in their feed.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing Follow with Remove: Unfollowing someone means you stop seeing their activity, but they still see yours. Removing a follower stops them from seeing your activity, but you still follow them. These are two different actions.
  • Expecting a notification: Apple Music does not notify the other person when you unfollow or remove them. There’s no “unfollow alert.”
  • Looking for a “block” option: Apple Music doesn’t have a direct block feature within the app. To block someone, you must do it through your Apple ID account settings (or via the Contacts app if they’re in your contacts). Removing a follower is the closest in-app option.
  • Assuming removing a follower also unfollows them: It doesn’t. If you want to completely disconnect, you need to both remove them as a follower and unfollow them.

Tips

  • Make your profile private: If you don’t want anyone to follow you at all, go to your profile (tap your picture in Listen Now), tap Edit, then toggle off Public Profile. This makes your profile invisible to others, and you won’t have any followers.
  • Use the search function: The fastest way to follow a specific artist or friend is to search for them, then tap the Follow button directly from the search results.
  • Check your following list regularly: People’s tastes change, and you might want to prune your list to keep your feed relevant.
  • Removing a follower is instant: They won’t get a warning, and they won’t be able to see your playlists or listening activity anymore.

Troubleshooting

  • Can’t find the Follow button: Make sure you have an active Apple Music subscription. Free accounts can’t follow people. Also, ensure you’re connected to the internet.
  • The Follow button is grayed out: This usually means the person has disabled their public profile, or they’ve blocked you. You can’t follow someone who has set their profile to private.
  • Removed follower still appears: Sometimes the app needs a moment to sync. Force-quit Apple Music (swipe up from the bottom and swipe the app card away), then reopen it. If the problem persists, sign out of your Apple ID in Settings and sign back in.
  • You see a follower you don’t recognize: This could be someone who found you through your Apple ID email or phone number. You can remove them as described above, or make your profile private to prevent new followers.
  • Changes don’t sync across devices: Apple Music syncs your social settings via iCloud. Make sure you’re signed into the same Apple ID on all devices and that iCloud Music Library is enabled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will someone know if I unfollow them?

No, Apple Music doesn’t send notifications when you unfollow someone. The only way they’d notice is if they manually check their followers list and see you’re gone.

Can I block someone on Apple Music?

There’s no block button inside Apple Music. To block someone, you’d need to block them through your Apple ID account settings (appleid.apple.com) or in the Contacts app if they’re in your contacts.

If I remove a follower, can they still see my profile?

No, once you remove a follower, they lose access to your profile and listening activity. They won’t be able to see your playlists or what you’re listening to.

Can I follow someone without them following me back?

Yes, following is one-way. You can follow anyone with a public profile, and they don’t have to follow you back.

How do I see who I’m following?

Go to your profile (tap your picture in Listen Now), then tap Following to see the full list.

Can I make my profile private so no one can follow me?

Yes, go to your profile, tap Edit, and turn off Public Profile. This will remove your profile from public view and stop new follower requests.
