Limit Adult Content on iPhone & iPad: Full Guide

Guide 10-19841 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to block adult content on your iPhone or iPad using the built-in Screen Time restrictions. You’ll be able to filter Safari and other web browsers, restrict explicit music and podcasts, and prevent app store downloads of adult-rated apps. You’ll need your device passcode and, if you set it up, your Screen Time passcode to make these changes.

What You’ll Need

  • Your iPhone or iPad with iOS 12 or later (most devices from 2015 onward).
  • The device passcode (the one you use to unlock the screen).
  • If Screen Time is already on, you’ll also need the Screen Time passcode (a separate 4-digit code you may have set up earlier).
  • An Apple ID and password if you want to prevent changes to your account or enable purchase restrictions.

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Settings. Tap the gray gear icon on your home screen. This is the app that controls all system functions.
  2. Tap Screen Time. It’s usually located in the third group of settings, below “Do Not Disturb” and above “General.”
  3. Turn On Screen Time (if it’s off). If you see a screen with “Turn On Screen Time & App Limits,” tap the button. If you already use Screen Time, skip to step 5.
  4. Set a Screen Time Passcode. After turning it on, you’ll be asked to create a 4-digit passcode. This is different from your device passcode. It prevents you or anyone else from changing these restrictions without the code. Enter a code you’ll remember, then re-enter it to confirm. If you ever forget it, you’ll need to reset your device, so write it down somewhere safe.
  5. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions. Scroll down in the Screen Time menu until you see this option. Tap it. If it’s not already toggled on, switch it on at the top of the next screen.
  6. Tap Content Restrictions. This is the second option in the list, below “iTunes & App Store Purchases.”
  7. Restrict Web Content. Tap “Web Content” (the first option). You’ll see three choices: “Unrestricted Access,” “Limit Adult Websites,” and “Allowed Websites Only.” Choose Limit Adult Websites. This automatically blocks many known adult sites while allowing everything else to work normally.
  8. Add Specific Sites to Block (Optional). Below the main options, you’ll see a section called “Never Allow.” Tap “Add Website” and type the exact web address of any site you want to block manually. This is useful for sites that slip through the filter.
  9. Allow Only Approved Sites (Stronger Option). If you want to be stricter, choose “Allowed Websites Only” instead. This creates a whitelist—only the sites listed (like Wikipedia, Disney, and PBS Kids) will work. All other sites are blocked. You can add more sites by tapping “Add Website” at the bottom.
  10. Restrict Explicit Music, Podcasts, and News. Go back to the main Content Restrictions screen. Tap “Music, Podcasts, News, & Fitness.” Select “Clean” to hide explicit content in Apple Music, Podcasts, and the News app.
  11. Restrict App Ratings. Tap “Apps” under Content Restrictions. Choose an age rating like “4+” or “12+.” This prevents downloading apps with higher age ratings from the App Store. Note that this only affects new downloads; apps already on the device remain unless you delete them.
  12. Block Explicit Books and Audiobooks. Tap “Books” and select “Clean.” This filters out books and audiobooks marked as explicit in the Apple Books store.
  13. Exit Settings. Press the Home button or swipe up from the bottom. Your changes are saved automatically. Test by opening Safari and visiting a known adult site—it should be blocked.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the Screen Time passcode. Many people set this and then forget it. If you forget it, you cannot change restrictions without erasing the device and restoring from a backup (which may not work if the backup is encrypted). Write it down.
  • Only restricting Safari. Adult content can appear in other browsers like Chrome or Firefox. The “Web Content” restriction applies to all browsers, but only if they support the system filter. Some third-party browsers may bypass it. For full coverage, use the “Allowed Websites Only” option.
  • Not restricting app downloads. If you only set web filters, someone can still download an adult-rated app from the App Store. Always set the “Apps” rating restriction as well.
  • Assuming it blocks everything. No filter is 100% perfect. New sites appear daily, and some content (like images in search results) may slip through. Regularly check the “Never Allow” list and add any new sites you find.
  • Turning off Screen Time entirely. Some people toggle Screen Time off to “reset” something, which removes all restrictions. Keep it on permanently.

Tips

  • Use a strong Screen Time passcode. Don’t use 1234 or your birth year. Use a random 4-digit number and store it in a password manager or a note in a secure app.
  • Set a communication limit. While not directly about adult content, you can restrict who your child can communicate with during certain hours. This adds another layer of safety.
  • Review the “Allowed Websites Only” list regularly. If you use this strict mode, your child may need a site for school that isn’t listed. Add it manually so they don’t get frustrated.
  • Use Family Sharing. If you manage a child’s device, set up Family Sharing and use “Ask to Buy.” This requires your approval for every app download, even if the rating is allowed.
  • Check the “Limit Adult Websites” list periodically. Apple updates this list, but you can also add your own sites. Tap “Edit” in the “Never Allow” section to see what’s already blocked.
  • Turn on “Block Explicit Music” for Siri. Go to Settings > Siri & Search > Siri Responses. Turn off “Explicit Language.” This prevents Siri from reading or speaking explicit words.

Troubleshooting

I forgot my Screen Time passcode. You cannot reset it through Settings. The only official method is to erase your device and restore from a backup that was made before you set the passcode. If you have an encrypted backup, the passcode may be included, but this is not guaranteed. If you don’t have a backup, you’ll need to set up the device as new.

Adult sites still load after enabling the filter. First, check that Content & Privacy Restrictions is actually toggled on (green). Then, check that “Web Content” is set to “Limit Adult Websites” and not “Unrestricted.” If it still fails, the site may be using a workaround. Add it manually to the “Never Allow” list. If that doesn’t work, switch to “Allowed Websites Only” mode.

The restriction is on, but the App Store still shows adult apps. The “Apps” rating restriction only affects downloads. If you already have an app installed, it stays. Delete it manually. Also, check that the rating you selected (like “12+”) is not too high. Choose “4+” to be safest.

Screen Time is grayed out or not responding. This usually means a previous restriction is active. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and ensure your device is up to date. If it’s still stuck, restart your iPhone by holding the power button and sliding to power off, then turning it back on.

I can’t turn off Screen Time. This is by design if you set a passcode. You must enter the Screen Time passcode to disable it. If you don’t have it, see the first troubleshooting point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this block adult content in apps like YouTube or Instagram? No. These restrictions only apply to Apple’s own apps (Safari, Music, Books) and the App Store. Third-party apps like YouTube have their own content filters that you must set separately within each app’s settings.

Will this work on an older iPhone with iOS 11? No. Screen Time was introduced in iOS 12. If you have iOS 11 or earlier, you’ll need to use the older “Restrictions” feature in Settings > General > Restrictions. The steps are similar but the menu names differ.

Can I set different restrictions for different family members? Yes, if you use Family Sharing. Each family member can have their own Screen Time settings. You can manage them from your own device under Settings > Screen Time > Family.

Does this block adult content in private browsing mode? Yes. The web content filter applies to all Safari tabs, including private ones. However, a determined user could clear Safari’s history and data, which might reset some filter settings. The filter itself remains active.

Will this slow down my internet? No. The filtering happens locally on your device, not through a proxy server. There is no speed impact.

Can I block specific websites without blocking everything else? Yes. Choose “Limit Adult Websites” and then add any specific sites to the “Never Allow” list. This blocks those exact addresses while allowing all other sites.
