How to Locate the Private Folder on Samsung Galaxy Note

Guide 10-28198 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to find and open the Private folder (also called Secure Folder) on your Samsung Galaxy Note. You’ll learn where it lives, how to access it with your chosen lock method, and what to do if you can’t see it at all.

What You’ll Need

  • A Samsung Galaxy Note phone (Note 8 or newer recommended)
  • Your Samsung account credentials if you set up Secure Folder with them
  • Your lock screen PIN, pattern, or password

Step-by-Step

  1. Check your app drawer. Swipe up from the bottom of your home screen to open the app drawer. Look for an app called Secure Folder (it has a padlock icon). On some Note models, it’s labeled Private or My Files — but the dedicated app is usually named Secure Folder.
  2. Open the Secure Folder app. Tap the icon. If you’ve never used it before, you’ll be asked to sign in with your Samsung account and set up a lock method. If you’ve used it, you’ll be prompted to enter your PIN, pattern, or password, or use biometrics (fingerprint or iris) if enabled.
  3. If you don’t see the app in the drawer: Go to Settings > Biometrics and security > Secure Folder. If the toggle is off, turn it on. This will place the Secure Folder app back in your app drawer.
  4. Alternatively, use the Quick Settings panel. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. Look for a Secure Folder icon (a padlock). If you don’t see it, tap the three-dot menu (⋮) and select Edit buttons, then drag the Secure Folder icon into the Quick Settings area.
  5. Access via My Files. Open the My Files app (usually in the Samsung folder or app drawer). Tap Internal storage and then look for a folder named Secure Folder. Note: this folder is encrypted and will only show its contents after you authenticate through the Secure Folder app.
  6. Once inside Secure Folder, you’ll see apps and files you’ve moved there. To add content, tap the + icon or the three-dot menu to add files, images, or apps.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing Private Mode with Secure Folder. Older Note models (Note 3, 4, 5) had a “Private Mode” that hid files within the Gallery or My Files. That feature is gone; modern Notes use Secure Folder. If you’re on an old model, look for Private Mode in Settings > Privacy & Safety.
  • Forgetting the lock method. Secure Folder uses a separate lock from your phone’s main lock. If you set a PIN for Secure Folder, your phone’s fingerprint won’t open it unless you explicitly enabled that.
  • Hiding the Secure Folder app. Some users hide the Secure Folder icon from the app drawer for privacy. If you did this, the steps above (Settings > Biometrics and security > Secure Folder) will bring it back.

Tips

  • Customize the Secure Folder name and icon. In Secure Folder, tap the three-dot menu > Settings > Customize icon. You can rename it to something innocuous like “Work” or “Utilities” so it doesn’t stand out.
  • Add Secure Folder to the home screen. Long-press the Secure Folder app icon and select Add to Home for quicker access.
  • Use biometrics for convenience. In Secure Folder settings, enable fingerprint or iris unlock to avoid typing a PIN every time.
  • Move apps into Secure Folder. You can duplicate apps (like WhatsApp or Gallery) inside Secure Folder to keep data separate. Just tap Add apps within Secure Folder.
  • Back up Secure Folder. Samsung Cloud can back up Secure Folder data, but it’s off by default. Go to Settings > Biometrics and security > Secure Folder > Backup and restore to enable it.

Troubleshooting

Secure Folder app is missing entirely. If you can’t find it in Settings or the app drawer, it may have been disabled. Go to Settings > Apps > tap the three-dot menu > Show system apps. Search for “Secure Folder” and tap Enable if it’s disabled. If it’s not there, your phone may not support it (older Note models) or your work profile might have restricted it.

Forgot the Secure Folder PIN/pattern. You can reset it only if you have a Samsung account linked. On the lock screen, tap Forgot? and sign in with your Samsung credentials. If you didn’t set up a Samsung account, you’ll have to back up and reset the phone, which erases all data including Secure Folder contents.

Secure Folder won’t open after a software update. Sometimes updates can cause authentication issues. Restart your phone first. If that doesn’t work, go to Settings > Biometrics and security > Secure Folder and toggle it off and on (this may require re-authentication but won’t delete data).

Files in Secure Folder are not visible. Make sure you’re actually inside the Secure Folder app, not just looking at the encrypted folder in My Files. The contents only appear after you unlock Secure Folder.

Secure Folder is greyed out in Settings. This often happens when a work profile (Knox) is active. Check with your IT administrator if this is a company phone. Otherwise, try clearing the cache of the Secure Folder app: Settings > Apps > Secure Folder > Storage > Clear cache.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where is the Private folder on Samsung Galaxy Note 10?
A: On Note 10 and later, it’s called Secure Folder. You’ll find it in the app drawer or via Quick Settings. If it’s not visible, enable it in Settings > Biometrics and security > Secure Folder.

Q: Can I move photos into the Private folder?
A: Yes. Open Secure Folder, tap the three-dot menu, select Add files, and choose images from your gallery. They’ll be copied into Secure Folder and removed from the main gallery if you select “Move”.

Q: Is the Private folder the same as a hidden folder?
A: No. A hidden folder (like one you create in My Files) just hides files from the default view, but they can be found with a file manager. Secure Folder is encrypted and requires authentication to access.

Q: How do I delete the Private folder?
A: In Secure Folder, go to Settings > More settings > Delete Secure Folder. This will erase all data inside it permanently. You can also disable it from Settings > Biometrics and security > Secure Folder.

Q: Can I access Secure Folder from my computer?
A: No. Secure Folder is only accessible on the phone itself. You can back up its contents to Samsung Cloud, but you can’t browse it from a PC.

Q: Does Secure Folder require a Samsung account?
A: Not for initial setup, but a Samsung account is required if you want to back up or restore Secure Folder data, and it’s necessary for resetting a forgotten PIN.
