Netflix Household Sharing & Extra Member Access

Guide 10-29551 · Updated · Step by step

Netflix’s household sharing rules determine who can use one account from the same home, and the Extra Member feature lets you pay for one or two people outside that household. This guide explains how the system works, what Extra Member access includes, and how to set it up or troubleshoot it.

What You’ll Need

  • An active Netflix subscription (Standard or Premium plan – Extra Member slots are only available on these plans).
  • Access to the account owner’s email and password, or the ability to receive a verification code on their phone.
  • The email address or phone number of the person you want to add as an Extra Member.
  • A device that can access Netflix (smart TV, phone, tablet, computer, or streaming stick).

Step-by-Step

  1. Understand the household definition. Netflix defines a household as the collection of devices connected to the internet at the place where you primarily watch Netflix. This is typically your home Wi-Fi network. To use the account, devices must be in this household, or you must verify a device as part of it.
  2. Check your plan. Go to netflix.com and sign in as the account owner. Navigate to Account → Plan Details. If you have the Basic or Basic with ads plan, you won’t see Extra Member options. You’ll need to upgrade to Standard or Premium to add extra members.
  3. Set your household (if prompted). Netflix may ask you to confirm your household. When you see the prompt, click “Confirm Household” on a TV device connected to your home Wi-Fi. This sends a verification link to the account owner’s email or a code to their phone. Follow the instructions to complete the setup.
  4. Add an Extra Member (if you’re on Standard or Premium). Go to Account → Manage Extra Members. Click “Add Extra Member.” Enter the person’s name and email address. Netflix will send them an invitation email.
  5. Have the extra member accept the invitation. The invited person clicks the link in the email and creates their own Netflix login (or uses an existing one). They must set up their own profile, password, and payment method – the extra member slot is billed separately from the main account.
  6. Understand the limits. The Standard plan allows one Extra Member; Premium allows two. Each Extra Member has their own profile, recommendations, and watch history. They can watch on one screen at a time in full HD (Standard) or 4K (Premium) depending on your plan.
  7. Manage or remove an extra member. As the account owner, you can remove an Extra Member anytime via Account → Manage Extra Members. Removing them ends their access immediately.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming Extra Members can share with others. An Extra Member cannot share their slot with anyone else – it’s for one person only.
  • Using a VPN or changing your household frequently. Netflix tracks your household via IP addresses and device IDs. If you travel or use a VPN, you may be asked to verify your device as part of the household. Frequent changes can lock you out.
  • Adding an Extra Member on a Basic plan. The option won’t appear, and you’ll waste time looking for it. Upgrade first.
  • Not setting a household at all. If you never confirm your household, Netflix may assume you’re sharing outside your home and block access on devices that don’t match the primary location.
  • Ignoring the email verification. If you don’t click the verification link in the email, the household setup won’t complete, and you’ll keep getting prompts.

Tips

  • Use the same Wi-Fi for initial setup. When you first confirm your household, do it from a TV or streaming device connected to your home Wi-Fi. This makes it easier for Netflix to recognize your location.
  • Keep your household stable. Avoid changing your home internet provider or moving your router frequently, as this can reset your household.
  • Tell extra members to use their own devices. If an Extra Member logs into your main account by mistake, they’ll be treated as a traveler and may be blocked.
  • Use the “Manage Devices” option. If you’re traveling, you can go to Account → Manage Devices and remove old devices that might confuse Netflix’s location detection.
  • Consider upgrading to Premium if you need two extra members. The cost difference may be less than two separate accounts.

Troubleshooting

  • Extra member can’t log in. Ask them to check their spam folder for the invitation email. If it’s expired, the account owner can resend the invitation from Manage Extra Members.
  • You’re asked to confirm your household repeatedly. This often happens when you use a VPN or travel. Connect to your home Wi-Fi and go to netflix.com/confirmhousehold. If that doesn’t work, log out of all devices and log back in on your home TV.
  • Device says “This device is not part of your household.” On the device, go to Settings → Sign Out, then sign back in. You may be prompted to verify via email or text. Do that immediately.
  • Extra member slot is full. You can’t add more than the plan allows. Either remove an existing extra member or upgrade your plan.
  • Extra member’s stream is blocked. They might be using a VPN or a device that’s not recognized. Ask them to turn off VPN and try again. If it persists, have them log out and log back in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an Extra Member have their own password?

Yes, the extra member creates their own login credentials. They log in with their own email and password, not yours.

Can an Extra Member watch on multiple screens at once?

No, an Extra Member can only stream on one screen at a time. That’s separate from the main account’s screen limit.

Will the Extra Member see my watch history?

No, they have their own profile, so their watch history, recommendations, and My List are completely separate from yours.

Can I add an Extra Member if I’m on the Basic plan?

No, Extra Member slots are only available on Standard and Premium plans. You’d need to upgrade.

What happens if I cancel my Netflix account?

All Extra Members lose access immediately. They won’t be able to log in to Netflix with their credentials.

Can I change which person is an Extra Member?

Yes, you can remove an Extra Member and add a different person, but you’ll need to wait for the new invitation to be accepted. There’s no limit on how often you can do this, but frequent changes may trigger security checks.
