10 Tech How-To

Organize & Browse Albums in Google Photos

Guide 10-19863 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to create, manage, and navigate albums in Google Photos so you can keep your library tidy and find any photo in seconds. You’ll learn the steps for organizing photos into albums on both mobile and desktop, plus tips for browsing and troubleshooting common issues.

What You’ll Need

  • A Google account with photos uploaded to Google Photos.
  • The Google Photos app (iOS/Android) or access to photos.google.com in a web browser.

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Google Photos – Launch the app on your phone or go to photos.google.com on your computer. Sign in if you aren’t already.
  2. Go to the Library tab – On mobile, tap the “Library” icon at the bottom right. On desktop, click “Library” in the left sidebar.
  3. Create a new album – Tap or click the “+” (plus) button and select “Album”. Give it a name, like “Vacation 2024” or “Family Portraits”.
  4. Add photos to the album – After naming the album, you’ll be prompted to select photos. Browse through your library and tap each photo you want to include. You can also use the search bar to filter by date, location, or people. Once selected, tap “Done” (mobile) or “Create” (desktop).
  5. Add more photos later – Open the album, tap the “+” icon (mobile) or “Add photos” button (desktop). Select additional photos and confirm.
  6. Remove photos from an album – Open the album, tap and hold a photo (mobile) or hover over it and click the checkmark (desktop) to select it. Then tap the trash icon or “Remove from album”. Note: this does not delete the photo from your main library.
  7. Rename or delete an album – Open the album, tap the three-dot menu (⋮) and choose “Edit album” to rename, or “Delete album” to remove the album entirely. Deleting an album does not delete the photos inside.
  8. Browse albums – In the Library tab, you’ll see all your albums in a grid. Tap an album to view its contents. Use the search icon at the top to find albums by name.
  9. Sort albums (desktop only) – On photos.google.com, you can sort albums by “Recently updated” or “Recently added” using the dropdown menu at the top of the album grid.
  10. Share an album – Open the album, tap the share icon, and choose who to share with. You can create a link that anyone can view, or share with specific people via email.

Common Mistakes

  • Deleting an album and thinking photos are gone – Photos remain in your main library. Only the album grouping is removed.
  • Removing a photo from an album and thinking it’s deleted – The photo stays in your library. To permanently delete, you must do it from the main photo view.
  • Not using search filters – Instead of scrolling endlessly, use the search bar to filter by date, location, or people to quickly add the right photos.
  • Creating too many tiny albums – This makes browsing harder. Consider using a few broader albums or using “Memories” instead.

Tips

  • Use auto-generated albums – Google Photos automatically creates albums for trips or events. You can find them under “Memories” or in the search results. You can edit these albums to add or remove photos.
  • Add photos from an existing album – When creating a new album, you can select “From album” to copy photos from another album without removing them.
  • Use the “Favorites” feature – Instead of making an album for every small set, star photos as favorites. They appear in a dedicated “Favorites” album that’s always accessible.
  • Share albums with family – Create a shared album for a family event and let others add their photos. This keeps everything in one place.
  • Keep album names descriptive – Use dates, locations, or event names to make albums easier to find later.

Troubleshooting

  • Can’t find an album – Check the Library tab. If you have many albums, use the search bar and type the album name. Also check that you’re signed into the correct Google account.
  • Photos not appearing in album – Make sure the photos are actually uploaded to Google Photos. If they are on your device but not backed up, they won’t appear in albums. Check the backup status in the app.
  • Album not syncing across devices – Albums sync automatically when you’re online. If changes don’t appear, refresh the app or reload the web page. Also check your internet connection.
  • Can’t add photos to a shared album – If you’re not the owner, the owner may have restricted adding. Ask the owner to change permissions.
  • Accidentally deleted an album – Deleted albums go to the trash for 30 days. Go to the Trash in the Library tab, select the album, and restore it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move photos between albums?

There’s no direct “move” option, but you can add a photo to another album and then remove it from the original. The photo itself stays in your main library.

Do album photos count against my storage?

No. Albums are just organizational containers. Photos and videos count against your storage only once, regardless of how many albums they appear in.

Can I create a folder structure like on my computer?

No, Google Photos uses a flat album system. You can’t nest albums inside folders. However, you can use descriptive names and search to simulate organization.

How do I share an album with someone who doesn’t have Google Photos?

When sharing, choose “Create link” and share that link. The recipient can view the album in a web browser without needing an account.

Can I automatically add photos to an album based on a person or place?

Not directly, but you can use search filters to find all photos of a person or location, then manually add them to an album. Google Photos also auto-creates albums for trips and events.

What happens if I delete a photo that’s in an album?

Deleting the photo from your library will also remove it from any albums it was in. This action is permanent after 30 days in the trash.
