Pin Text Messages on iPhone: Step-by-Step Guide

Guide 10-21383 · Updated · Step by step

Pinning a text conversation in the Messages app keeps your most important chats at the top of your message list, so you don’t have to scroll to find them. This guide walks you through pinning, unpinning, and managing pinned conversations on any iPhone running iOS 14 or later. No prior setup is needed—just make sure your iPhone is updated and you know which conversations you want to prioritize.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone with iOS 14 or later (check in Settings > General > Software Update).
  • The Messages app (pre-installed, no download needed).
  • At least one existing text conversation (with anyone—iMessage or SMS).

Step-by-Step

  1. Open the Messages app. Tap the green icon with the white speech bubble on your home screen or in your app library.
  2. Find the conversation you want to pin. Scroll through your message list to locate the chat. It can be an individual or a group conversation.
  3. Press and hold the conversation. Touch and hold the message bubble or the contact’s name/photo in the list. Do not tap—just hold until a menu pops up.
  4. Tap “Pin” from the menu. You’ll see a list of options like “Pin,” “Hide Alerts,” “Delete,” etc. Select “Pin.” The conversation will immediately jump to the top of your message list, displayed as a larger circle with the contact’s photo or initials.
  5. Repeat for other conversations. You can pin up to nine conversations. Each new pin will appear to the right of the existing ones (or below if you have many).
  6. To unpin, press and hold the pinned conversation. Tap the pinned circle at the top of the list, hold it, and choose “Unpin” from the menu. The conversation will return to its normal position in your chat list, sorted by most recent message.

Common Mistakes

  • Pressing too lightly or too long. If you tap instead of press-and-hold, you’ll open the conversation instead of the menu. If you hold for too long, the iPhone may enter jiggle mode (on the home screen) or trigger a drag-and-drop. Use a firm, steady press for about one second.
  • Confusing Pin with “Hide Alerts.” “Pin” keeps the conversation at the top; “Hide Alerts” only mutes notifications. They are separate options—pinning does not mute, and muting does not pin.
  • Expecting pins to sync across devices. Pins are a per-device setting. If you pin on your iPhone, it won’t automatically pin on your iPad or Mac. You’ll need to pin separately on each device.
  • Trying to pin from inside the conversation. You can only pin from the main message list, not from within an open chat. Exit the conversation first.
  • Assuming you can pin more than nine. iOS allows a maximum of nine pinned conversations. If you try to pin a tenth, the option may be grayed out or you’ll need to unpin one first.

Tips

  • Use pinning for time-sensitive chats. Pin active group chats (like family or work) so you can quickly check for new messages without searching.
  • Combine with “Hide Alerts” for quiet but important chats. If a pinned conversation is too noisy, press and hold it and select “Hide Alerts” to mute notifications while keeping it at the top.
  • Reorder pinned conversations. To change the order, press and hold a pinned circle, then drag it left or right (or up/down if in a grid) to your preferred position. Release to drop it.
  • Pin a conversation you use for frequent calls or FaceTime. Tapping the info icon (i) inside the chat gives you quick access to call or video call—having it pinned saves time.
  • Unpin temporarily. If you need to focus, unpin a distracting chat. You can always re-pin it later without losing any messages.

Troubleshooting

  • Pin option not showing up? Make sure you’re on iOS 14 or later. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If you’re on an older iOS, update your iPhone. Also, ensure you’re pressing and holding on the conversation row, not on the search field or the edit button.
  • Pinned conversation disappeared? It might have been unpinned accidentally. Check the top of your message list—if it’s not there, press and hold the conversation in the regular list and select “Pin” again. Also, if you delete the conversation, the pin is removed.
  • Pinned conversations not staying at top? Pins are designed to stay at the top regardless of new messages. If they’re not, try restarting your iPhone (press and hold power + volume, slide to power off, then turn back on). If the issue persists, check for a software update.
  • Can’t drag to reorder? Make sure you press and hold the pinned circle until it lifts slightly (you’ll feel a haptic tap), then drag. If it doesn’t respond, try using a lighter touch or check if your iPhone’s “Touch Accommodations” in Settings > Accessibility > Touch is interfering.
  • Pin works but notifications are still noisy? That’s expected—pinning doesn’t mute. To mute, press and hold the pinned conversation and select “Hide Alerts.” A moon icon will appear next to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pin SMS/MMS messages (green bubbles) or only iMessage (blue bubbles)?
You can pin any conversation, whether it’s iMessage, SMS, or MMS. The feature works for all message types.

Will pinning a conversation affect message delivery or read receipts?
No. Pinning only changes the visual layout of your message list. It doesn’t affect delivery, read receipts, or any other messaging feature.

Can I pin a conversation from my Mac or iPad?
Yes, you can pin conversations on iPad and Mac as well, but the pins are not synced across devices. You’ll need to pin each conversation separately on each device.

Does unpinning delete the conversation or its messages?
No. Unpinning simply removes the conversation from the top of your list. All messages remain intact, and the conversation will appear in your regular chat list sorted by the most recent message.

Can I pin a conversation that I’ve hidden with “Hide Alerts”?
Yes, you can pin a conversation and hide alerts at the same time. The two features are independent. Just press and hold the conversation and select both options.

Why can I only pin nine conversations?
Apple has set a limit of nine pinned conversations to keep the interface clean and manageable. If you need more, consider using the search bar or creating a group chat to consolidate.
