Recover Deleted Facebook Messages on Mac

Guide 10-12547 · Updated · Step by step

This guide walks you through the practical ways to recover deleted Facebook messages using a Mac, covering the built-in download tool, archived conversations, and a few lesser-known tricks. You’ll need your Facebook login details and, for the most reliable method, a computer with enough space to download your full data archive.

What You’ll Need

  • Your Facebook username and password
  • Access to the email address linked to your Facebook account (for verification codes)
  • At least 1–2 GB of free storage on your Mac (the archive can be large)
  • A stable internet connection
  • An unzipping tool (macOS Archive Utility works fine)

Step-by-Step

Method 1: Download Your Facebook Data (Most Reliable)

  1. Open Safari or Chrome on your Mac and go to facebook.com. Log in if you aren’t already.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top-right corner, then select Settings & privacy > Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, click Your Facebook information.
  4. Next to Download your information, click View.
  5. You’ll see a list of data categories. To get your messages, make sure the Messages checkbox is ticked. You can also tick Chats if you want voice or video call history.
  6. Scroll down to Format and choose HTML (easy to read in a browser) or JSON (more detailed, but harder to read). For most people, HTML is best.
  7. Set the Media quality to Low if you only want text – this makes the file much smaller and downloads faster.
  8. Choose a Date range. If you want everything, pick All of my data.
  9. Click Create file. Facebook will email you when the archive is ready. This can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how much data you have.
  10. When the email arrives, click the Download button in the email. You’ll be asked to enter your password again for security.
  11. Your Mac downloads a ZIP file. Double-click it to unzip. Inside, open the messages folder, then the your_activity_across_facebook folder (or similar).
  12. Open the index.html file in a browser. You’ll see a list of all your conversations, including ones you thought were deleted – as long as they were still in Facebook’s database.

Method 2: Check Archived Messages

  1. On Facebook’s main page, click the Messenger icon (the lightning bolt) in the top-right.
  2. Click the three dots (…) at the top of the chat list, then select Archived chats.
  3. Look through the list. If you find the conversation, open it and select Unarchive from the top menu.

Method 3: Check Your Email Notifications

  1. Search your email inbox (the one linked to Facebook) for messages from Facebook or Messenger.
  2. If you had email notifications enabled, you might find the text of the deleted message in those notification emails.

Method 4: Ask the Other Person

  1. If the message was in a conversation with someone else, ask them to take a screenshot or forward the relevant part of the chat to you. Their copy is unaffected by your deletion.

Common Mistakes

  • Deleting the notification email – if you rely on email backups, don’t delete those Facebook notification emails.
  • Choosing “Delete for everyone” – this removes the message from both sides and makes it much harder to recover. It’s not impossible via the archive, but it’s less likely.
  • Not waiting for the archive email – the download can take hours. Don’t assume it failed; check your spam folder.
  • Using a third-party recovery tool – these rarely work for Facebook messages and can compromise your account. Stick to official methods.

Tips

  • Download your Facebook data regularly (every 6 months) as a backup. It’s free and gives you a complete record.
  • Use the JSON format if you plan to search through messages programmatically or with a script.
  • If you only need one conversation, you can scroll back in the chat and use Cmd+F to search within the page – but this only works if the messages are still visible.
  • Turn on email notifications for important conversations in Messenger settings, so you always have a copy in your inbox.

Troubleshooting

My archive download fails or is stuck

Try again with a different browser, or clear your browser cache. If it still fails, reduce the date range to a shorter period (e.g., last year) and create a new file. Also, ensure you have enough free disk space – the archive can be several GB.

I can’t find the messages folder in the archive

If you only selected Messages, the folder should be there. If you selected everything, the messages are under your_activity_across_facebook > messages. If it’s missing, you may have not ticked the Messages checkbox – redo the download with that box checked.

The message is not in the archive

If you permanently deleted the message and it was fully purged from Facebook’s servers, it won’t appear. This can happen after a long time or if you used “Delete for everyone”. Unfortunately, there is no official way to recover it. The archive only contains what Facebook still has.

I get a security check when downloading

This is normal. Facebook will ask you to enter a code sent to your email or phone. Make sure you have access to those.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover deleted messages without downloading my data?

If the messages were only deleted from your view (not “Delete for everyone”), you can often still see them by scrolling back in the conversation on Messenger. The archive method is the most thorough, but it’s not instant.

How long does Facebook keep deleted messages?

Facebook states that deleted messages are removed from its servers, but the exact timing is not publicly specified. In practice, the archive download may still include recently deleted messages for a short period.

Is there a way to recover messages from a deactivated account?

If you deactivate your account, your messages remain and you can recover them by reactivating and downloading your data. If you permanently deleted your account, recovery is generally not possible.

Can I recover messages from a friend’s account if they deleted them?

No, you can only recover messages from your own account. If your friend deleted the conversation on their side, you can still access your copy unless they used “Delete for everyone”.

Does the archive include deleted photos or attachments?

Yes, if the attachment is still in Facebook’s system. The archive includes a media folder with photos, videos, and files that were part of your conversations.

Are third-party apps like “Message Recovery” safe?

No. They are not affiliated with Facebook, often require your password, and can steal your account. Avoid them entirely.
