Remove Someone from an iPhone Text Group

Guide 10-22181 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to remove a person from a group text message on an iPhone. The method differs depending on whether the group uses iMessage (blue bubbles) or SMS/MMS (green bubbles), and this walkthrough covers both, plus what to do when the option is grayed out.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone running iOS 13 or later (the steps are nearly identical on older versions, but menu wording may differ slightly).
  • Be the person who started the group conversation, or be in a group where the creator has enabled the option for others to add/remove members.
  • For iMessage groups: all participants must be using iMessage (blue bubbles). If anyone in the group has a green bubble, the entire group is treated as SMS/MMS and removal is not supported by Apple.

Step-by-Step

Removing Someone from an iMessage Group (Blue Bubbles)

  1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the group conversation you want to edit.
  3. Tap the group icons or the name/avatar at the very top of the screen. This opens the group details page.
  4. Look for the list of participants under “Members” or in the circle icons at the top.
  5. Find the person you want to remove. Swipe left on their name (or their circle icon) and tap Remove. Alternatively, on some iOS versions, tap “Info” (the “i” in a circle) next to their name, then tap “Remove from Conversation”.
  6. Confirm the removal if prompted. The person is removed immediately and will no longer see or receive messages in that group.

Removing Someone from an SMS/MMS Group (Green Bubbles)

Apple does not allow removing a participant from a standard SMS/MMS group thread. The only ways to handle this are:

  1. If you started the group, you can delete the entire conversation and start a new one without that person. To do this, swipe left on the conversation in the Messages list and tap Delete. Then create a new group with only the people you want.
  2. If you did not start the group, ask the person who did to start a new group without the unwanted member.
  3. Alternatively, you can leave the group yourself if you are the one who wants out. Open the group, tap the top icons, scroll to the bottom, and tap “Leave This Conversation” (only available in iMessage groups, not SMS groups).

Common Mistakes

  • Trying to remove someone from an SMS group: As noted, this is impossible. If you see green bubbles, the Remove option will not appear.
  • Assuming anyone can remove anyone: In many iMessage groups, only the group creator can remove members. If you are not the creator, the Remove button may be missing or grayed out.
  • Swipe direction: On some iOS versions, you need to tap the person’s name first, then tap “Remove” in the pop-up. Swiping left on the name itself does nothing on older iOS versions.
  • Confusing “Leave” with “Remove”: “Leave This Conversation” removes you from the group, not the other person. Make sure you tap the correct option.

Tips

  • If you are the group creator and want to allow others to add/remove members, go to the group details page and toggle on “Allow Everyone to Add/Remove People” (this option appears on some iOS versions). Without this, only you can manage the member list.
  • To avoid future issues, consider starting a new group with only the people you want, rather than trying to edit an existing one.
  • If you remove someone by accident, you can add them back by tapping “Add Member” or the “+” icon in the group details page and selecting their contact.
  • Removing someone does not delete the message history for that person. They will still see the thread in their Messages app, but they will not receive new messages.

Troubleshooting

The Remove option is grayed out or missing. This almost always means you are not the group creator, or the group is an SMS/MMS group. Check the bubble colors: blue = iMessage, green = SMS. If green, you cannot remove anyone. If blue and you are the creator, try updating iOS to the latest version, as older versions had stricter controls.

You removed someone but they still see the group. They will still see the old conversation thread, but they should not receive new messages. If they do receive new messages, the removal did not go through—repeat the steps and make sure you tap “Remove” and confirm.

The person’s name does not show a remove option when you swipe. Tap directly on their name (not the circle icon) to open a contact card, then look for “Remove from Conversation” at the bottom of that card.

You want to remove yourself but the option is not there. “Leave This Conversation” only appears in iMessage groups. In SMS groups, you cannot leave; you must delete the conversation. Also, if you are the only person left besides one other, the option may be hidden—in that case, just delete the thread.

After removing someone, the group still shows their name. This is a display glitch. Force-quit the Messages app (swipe up from the bottom and swipe the app away) and reopen it. The name should disappear from the member list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I remove someone from a group text if I didn’t start it? Only if the creator enabled “Allow Everyone to Add/Remove People.” Otherwise, you cannot remove anyone; you can only leave the group yourself.

Why don’t I see the “Remove” option at all? Most likely because the group is an SMS/MMS group (green bubbles). Apple does not support member removal in those groups. It could also be that you are not the creator and the option is disabled.

Will the removed person know they were removed? They will stop receiving messages from the group. They may notice the group is no longer active, but they do not get a notification saying “You were removed.”

Can I remove someone and then add them back later? Yes, if you have the ability to remove (creator or permission granted), you can add them back by tapping “Add Member” and selecting their contact.

Does removing someone delete the conversation for everyone? No. Each person keeps their own copy of the message history. Removing someone only stops future messages from being delivered to that person.

What if the person I want to remove has an Android phone? Then the group is an SMS/MMS group and you cannot remove them. You will need to start a new group without them.
