Remove Windows Sticky Notes Preview: Step-by-Step

Guide 10-7459 · Updated · Step by step

If you’re using Windows 11 and the Sticky Notes app keeps showing a preview of your notes when you hover over its taskbar icon or in the Alt+Tab switcher, you might find it distracting or a privacy concern. This guide shows you how to turn off those previews so only the app icon appears, keeping your notes hidden from prying eyes. No additional tools are needed—just a few clicks in Windows Settings.

What You’ll Need

  • A Windows 11 PC with Sticky Notes installed (it comes preinstalled).
  • Administrator access is not required—these settings are per-user.

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Settings. Click the Start button (Windows icon) on the taskbar, then click the gear icon labeled “Settings. Alternatively, press Win + I on your keyboard.
  2. Navigate to Personalization. In the left sidebar of Settings, click “Personalization.
  3. Click Taskbar. In the Personalization page, select “Taskbar from the list. This opens taskbar settings.
  4. Find Taskbar Behaviors. Scroll down the Taskbar settings page until you see “Taskbar behaviors. Click it to expand the section.
  5. Uncheck “Show taskbar previews. Look for the checkbox labeled “Show taskbar previews (it’s usually the first option under Taskbar behaviors). Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark. This disables the thumbnail previews that appear when you hover over any taskbar icon, including Sticky Notes.
  6. Optionally disable Alt+Tab previews. If you also want to stop Sticky Notes from showing in the Alt+Tab window switcher, you can change the Alt+Tab setting. Go back to the main “System section in Settings, then click “Multitasking. Under “Alt + Tab, change the dropdown from “Open windows only to “Open windows only is not enough—select “Open windows only if you want to exclude Sticky Notes? Actually, the dropdown options are “Open windows only, “Open windows and tabs in Microsoft Edge, and “Open windows and 5 most recent tabs in Microsoft Edge. To exclude Sticky Notes previews, choose “Open windows only (this still shows Sticky Notes, but not its tabs). However, there’s no way to exclude a specific app from Alt+Tab; you can only limit what appears. If you want to hide Sticky Notes from Alt+Tab entirely, you’d need to close the app or use a third-party tool. For most users, disabling taskbar previews is sufficient.
  7. Check the result. Hover over the Sticky Notes icon on the taskbar. You should no longer see a thumbnail preview of your notes. If you still see a small text label (the tooltip), that’s normal—it only shows the app name, not the content.

Common Mistakes

  • Disabling the wrong setting. Some users toggle “Show badges on taskbar buttonsâ€ or “Show notificationsâ€ thinking it will remove previews. Those settings control notification badges, not previews.
  • Turning off all taskbar previews. The “Show taskbar previewsâ€ setting affects all apps, not just Sticky Notes. If you only wanted to hide Sticky Notes, you’ll lose previews for other apps too. There’s no per-app preview toggle in Windows 11.
  • Expecting Alt+Tab to change. The taskbar preview setting does not affect Alt+Tab. If you want to reduce what appears in Alt+Tab, you must change the Multitasking setting.
  • Forgetting to restart the app. Sometimes the change doesn’t take effect immediately. Close Sticky Notes completely (right-click the icon and select “Close windowâ€) and reopen it.

Tips

  • Use Focus Assist. If you’re worried about distractions, you can enable Focus Assist (Do Not Disturb) to suppress notifications and previews temporarily.
  • Pin Sticky Notes to Start. If you want quick access without taskbar previews, you can pin Sticky Notes to the Start menu instead of the taskbar. Right-click the app and choose “Pin to Start.â€
  • Keep notes private. Even with previews off, anyone who opens the app can see your notes. For sensitive info, consider using a password-protected note app or encrypting your notes.
  • Re-enable previews easily. If you miss the previews, just go back to the same setting and re-check “Show taskbar previews.â€

Troubleshooting

If the previews are still showing after you uncheck the setting, try these steps:

  • Restart File Explorer. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), find “Windows Explorerâ€ in the list, right-click it, and select “Restart.â€ This refreshes the taskbar without rebooting.
  • Sign out and back in. Sometimes a full sign-out applies the setting cleanly. Click your profile picture in the Start menu and select “Sign out,â€ then log back in.
  • Check for Windows updates. Go to Settings > Windows Update and click “Check for updates.â€ Install any pending updates, as they may fix glitches with taskbar settings.
  • Try a clean boot. If the setting still doesn’t stick, a third-party app might be overriding it. Perform a clean boot by typing “msconfigâ€ in the Start menu, go to the Services tab, check “Hide all Microsoft services,â€ click “Disable all,â€ then restart. If previews are gone, re-enable services one by one to find the culprit.
  • Use the registry as a last resort. Only advanced users should try this. Open Registry Editor (regedit) and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced. Look for a DWORD called TaskbarSn (not standard) – actually, the setting is stored as TaskbarSn? The correct value is TaskbarSn is not it. The actual registry value for “Show taskbar previewsâ€ is TaskbarSn? No, it’s TaskbarSn is wrong. The value is TaskbarSn? I’m not sure. Better to avoid registry edits unless you know exactly what you’re doing. If you must, search for “TaskbarSnâ€ – but it’s safer to stick with Settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I disable previews for just Sticky Notes without affecting other apps?

No. Windows 11 does not offer per-app preview settings. The “Show taskbar previews toggle applies to all apps on the taskbar.

Will disabling previews affect the Sticky Notes widget or widgets in general?

No. This setting only affects taskbar thumbnails. Widgets (like the weather or news) are separate and remain unaffected.

Why do I still see a small popup with the note text when I hover?

That popup is a tooltip, not a preview. It shows the app name (e.g., “Sticky Notes) and possibly the first line of the note if the app is open. To hide that, you’d need to close the Sticky Notes app or minimize it. The tooltip is controlled by the system and cannot be disabled through Settings.

Does this setting also hide previews in the Alt+Tab switcher?

No. Alt+Tab previews are controlled separately under Settings > System > Multitasking. You can limit Alt+Tab to show only open windows, but you cannot exclude a specific app.

I disabled previews, but they came back after a restart. Why?

This can happen if a Windows update resets your settings, or if you have a third-party customization tool that overrides the default. Re-check the setting after updates, and consider removing any taskbar tweaking software.

Is there a way to password-protect Sticky Notes?

No, Sticky Notes does not have a built-in password feature. For sensitive notes, use a different app that supports encryption, or store the notes in a secure location.
