Save Multiple iMessage Photos: Step-by-Step

Guide 10-17187 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to save several photos from an iMessage conversation at once, saving you from tapping each image individually. You’ll learn the built-in iPhone/iPad method, how to save to Files, and what to do when the option doesn’t appear. No special apps or computer needed—just your device and the Messages app.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone or iPad with iOS 16 or later (the steps for older versions are noted where they differ)
  • The conversation containing the photos you want to save
  • Enough free storage on your device for the photos

Step-by-Step

Method 1: Save Multiple Photos to Your Photo Library (iOS 16 and later)

  1. Open the Messages app and go to the conversation that has the photos.
  2. Tap the contact name or number at the top of the screen. This opens the Details view.
  3. Scroll down to the Photos section. You’ll see a grid of all images shared in that chat.
  4. Tap the circle with three dots (⋯) in the upper-right corner of the Photos section.
  5. Tap Select Photos.
  6. Tap each photo you want to save. A blue checkmark appears on selected ones.
  7. Tap Save (bottom-right corner). The selected photos are saved to your Photos app.

Method 2: Save to Files (Works on all iOS versions)

  1. Open the conversation and tap the contact name at the top.
  2. Scroll to the Photos section and tap See All (if available) to view the full grid.
  3. Tap Select in the top-right corner.
  4. Tap the photos you want, then tap the Share icon (square with arrow up) at the bottom.
  5. Choose Save to Files from the share sheet.
  6. Pick a location (e.g., On My iPhone, iCloud Drive) and tap Save.

Method 3: Save All Photos in a Message (Older iOS)

  1. Open the message bubble that contains multiple photos.
  2. Tap the photos to expand them.
  3. Tap and hold on one photo until the menu appears.
  4. Tap Save — this saves all photos in that message bubble, not just the one you held.

Common Mistakes

  • Tapping each photo in the chat thread: That only saves one at a time. Use the Details view instead.
  • Expecting the “Select Photos” option on older iOS: If you don’t see it, update iOS or use the Save to Files method.
  • Saving to Files when you wanted Photos: Files stores the image as a file, not in your camera roll. Choose the right destination.
  • Forgetting that Live Photos save as still images: When saving from Details, Live Photos may lose their motion effect. Check your settings.

Tips

  • To save every photo in a conversation at once, use the Select All option if it appears (some iOS versions have it).
  • If you’re running low on storage, save to Files on iCloud Drive instead of your device.
  • Use the search bar in Messages to filter by “photos” to quickly find the conversation with the most images.
  • If you need the photos on a computer, save them to Files and then access iCloud Drive on your Mac or PC.

Troubleshooting

“Select Photos” doesn’t appear

This happens on iOS 15 or earlier. Update your device to iOS 16+ to get the feature. If you can’t update, use Method 2 (Save to Files) or Method 3 (save from the message bubble).

Photos save but are blurry or low quality

iMessage compresses photos by default. To get the original quality, ask the sender to share via AirDrop or email. Also check that “Low Quality Image Mode” is off in Settings > Messages.

“Save” button is greyed out

This usually means you haven’t selected any photos. Tap the photos first to add checkmarks, then tap Save.

Photos disappear from the Details view

If the sender deleted the messages, the photos may no longer be available. Scroll up in the chat to see if they’re still in the thread—if not, they’re gone.

Saved photos are in a weird order

Messages saves them in the order they appear in the chat, not by date. To reorder, use the Photos app to sort or create an album.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I save all photos from a conversation at once?

Yes, on iOS 16 and later, go to Details > Photos > ⋯ > Select Photos, then tap Select All if available. Otherwise, manually select all.

Will saving photos from iMessage preserve the original quality?

No, iMessage compresses images. For original quality, ask the sender to AirDrop or share via a file-transfer service.

Can I save photos to a specific album in the Photos app?

Not directly from Messages. They save to your Recents. After saving, you can move them to an album in the Photos app.

Why can’t I save photos from a group chat?

You can, but if the group chat has many photos, the Details view may take a moment to load. Scroll down and wait for the grid to appear.

Do the photos save to iCloud automatically?

If you have iCloud Photos enabled, yes—they’ll sync across your devices. Otherwise, they stay only on the device.

Can I save photos from a deleted conversation?

No, once the conversation is deleted, the photos are gone unless you had previously saved them or backed up your device.
