How to See Shared iPhone Location

Guide 10-5754 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to view the location of someone who has shared their iPhone location with you, using the Find My app. You’ll learn the quick steps to see their live position, how to set up location sharing if you haven’t yet, and what to do when the location doesn’t appear or is inaccurate.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone with iOS 13 or later (Find My app is preinstalled).
  • The person you want to locate must have already shared their location with you via iCloud, or you need to send them a sharing request.
  • Both of you need to be signed in to iCloud with your Apple IDs and have Location Services enabled.
  • An internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular) on your iPhone.

Step-by-Step

  1. Open the Find My app. It has a green icon with a blue radar circle. If you can’t find it, swipe down on the Home Screen and search for “Find My.
  2. Tap the “People tab at the bottom of the screen. This shows a list of people who have shared their location with you, and those you’ve shared with.
  3. Select the person’s name from the list. Their name will appear with a small map icon next to it if they are currently sharing.
  4. View their location on the map. After tapping the name, you’ll see a map with their location pin. The bottom of the screen shows their name, the time the location was last updated, and a label like “Current Location or “Not Found.
  5. Tap “Directions (if you want to navigate to them). This opens Apple Maps with a route from your current location to theirs.
  6. Use the “Notify Me feature (optional). While viewing their location, tap “Notify Me to get alerts when they arrive at or leave a specific location.
  7. Refresh the location manually if it seems stale. Pull down on the screen or tap the person’s name again to force an update. You can also tap the arrow icon in the top-right to center the map on their last known position.

Common Mistakes

  • Looking in the wrong app: Some users search for “Find Friendsâ€ or “Find My iPhone.â€ Those apps were merged into the single Find My app in iOS 13. Use the green Find My app.
  • Not having Location Services enabled: If you or the other person have Location Services turned off for Find My, the location won’t appear. Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and ensure it’s on for Find My.
  • Sharing is one-way only: Seeing someone’s location requires them to share with you. If you only shared your location with them, you won’t see theirs unless they also share back.
  • Ignoring the “last updatedâ€ time: The location can be up to a few minutes old. If it says “1 hour ago,â€ the person may have poor connectivity or has stopped sharing.
  • Assuming “Not Foundâ€ means they’re hiding: It can also mean their phone is off, in Airplane Mode, or they’re in an area with no signal.

Tips

  • Set up sharing from your end: If you don’t see the person in your People list, you can initiate sharing. In Find My > People, tap the “+â€ icon, choose “Share My Location,â€ and enter their Apple ID or phone number. They’ll receive a request and must accept it.
  • Use “Ask to Followâ€ for a request: If someone hasn’t shared with you but you know they’re on iCloud, you can send them a request. In Find My > People, tap “+â€ > “Ask to Followâ€ and select their contact. They’ll get a prompt to share their location with you.
  • Enable “Share My Locationâ€ in Settings: Go to Settings > Your Name > Find My > Share My Location. Make sure it’s toggled on. This is required for both you and the other person.
  • Check the time zone: The map shows the person’s local time. If they’re in a different time zone, the “last updatedâ€ timestamp reflects their local time, not yours.
  • Use the “Meâ€ tab to verify your own status: Tap the “Meâ€ tab in Find My. It shows whether you’re sharing your location and with whom. If you see “No location foundâ€ for yourself, your own settings are off.

Troubleshooting

Location not appearing at all: First, ask the other person to open Find My and confirm they’re sharing with you. Then, check your own internet connection and toggle Airplane Mode off and on. If it still doesn’t show, restart your iPhone. Also, make sure both of you have the latest iOS version.

Location is stale or inaccurate: The person’s phone may be in Low Power Mode, which reduces location updates. Ask them to disable Low Power Mode or open Find My on their device to force a refresh. Also, verify that they have “Precise Location enabled for Find My in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Find My.

“No location found message: This usually means the person has stopped sharing, their phone is off, or they’re not connected to the internet. If you think they’re still sharing, have them check Settings > Your Name > Find My > Share My Location and confirm it’s on.

Person appears in your list but you can’t tap their name: This can happen if the sharing request is pending. The person needs to accept your request or share back. Ask them to open Find My and check for a notification.

You see “Location Unavailable after a recent update: Sometimes after an iOS update, location permissions reset. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Find My and make sure it’s set to “While Using the App or “Always.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I see someone’s location if they haven’t shared with me?
A: No. You can only see someone’s location if they have explicitly shared it with you. You can send a request, but they must accept it.

Q: Why does the location keep updating to a different spot?
A: That’s normal if the person is moving. The app updates their location as their phone receives GPS and network data. If it jumps erratically, they might be in an area with weak GPS signal.

Q: Can I see the location of someone who has turned off their phone?
A: No. If the phone is off, it can’t send its location. You’ll see “No location found or the last known location before the phone was turned off.

Q: Does sharing my location with someone let them see my location forever?
A: Yes, until you stop sharing. You can stop sharing at any time by going to Find My > People, tapping the person’s name, and choosing “Stop Sharing My Location.

Q: Can I see someone’s location on a Mac or iPad?
A: Yes, the Find My app is available on iPad and Mac as well. Sign in with the same Apple ID and you’ll see the same shared locations.

Q: What if the person is in another country?
A: Location sharing works internationally as long as both devices have internet access. The map will show their location in the correct country, and you can get directions if needed.
