Collaborative Playlists in iOS 17: Setup Guide

Guide 10-29755 · Updated · Step by step

Collaborative playlists let you and your friends add, remove, and reorder songs in a shared Apple Music playlist. This guide walks you through creating one, inviting people, and managing contributions on iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later. You’ll need an Apple Music subscription and iCloud Music Library enabled.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone or iPad with iOS 17 or later
  • An active Apple Music subscription (individual, student, or family)
  • iCloud Music Library turned on (Settings > Music > Sync Library)
  • iMessage or a link-sharing method (AirDrop, Mail, Messages) to invite others
  • Each participant also needs an Apple Music subscription and iOS 17 or later

Step-by-Step

  1. Open the Music app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to your Library by tapping the Library tab at the bottom.
  3. Select Playlists from the library sections.
  4. Tap New Playlist (or choose an existing playlist you own).
  5. Give the playlist a name and optionally add a description and cover art.
  6. Tap Create (for a new playlist) or Done if editing an existing one.
  7. Open the playlist you want to share.
  8. Tap the person icon (with a plus sign) in the top-right corner of the playlist screen. This icon appears next to the “Add Music” button.
  9. Tap Start Collaboration in the pop-up menu.
  10. Choose how to invite people: you can send an iMessage, copy a link, or use AirDrop. If you pick Messages, select the contacts you want and hit send.
  11. Wait for people to accept the invitation. Once they join, their name appears in the collaborator list.
  12. Add songs as usual – any collaborator can add, remove, or reorder tracks by editing the playlist directly.
  13. Approve or reject new songs if you enabled “Approve Collaborators” (optional).

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to enable Sync Library – without it, the collaboration option won’t appear.
  • Using an older iOS version – collaborative playlists require iOS 17 or later on all devices.
  • Inviting people without Apple Music – they can view the playlist but can’t edit it.
  • Not tapping the person icon – the icon is subtle; look for it in the top-right corner of the playlist view.
  • Sharing a link that expires – the link may expire if you set an expiration date when creating it.
  • Editing while offline – changes may not sync until you’re back online.

Tips

  • Set collaboration rules – after starting collaboration, tap the person icon again to choose who can add songs (everyone or only you approve).
  • Use the activity feed – you’ll see notifications when someone adds a song, so you can react or remove it.
  • Keep the playlist organized – use the “Sort” option to arrange songs by artist, album, or recently added.
  • Share the link in group chats – this makes it easy for multiple friends to join at once.
  • Remove a collaborator – tap the person icon, then tap the person’s name and choose “Remove.”
  • End collaboration – tap the person icon and toggle off “Collaborative Playlist” to stop sharing.

Troubleshooting

Collaboration option not showing? Make sure you have iOS 17 or later, Sync Library is on, and you’re using an Apple Music subscription. Restart the Music app if needed.

People can’t join? Check that your invitation link hasn’t expired. Resend the link or try a different sharing method like AirDrop.

Changes not syncing? Ensure all collaborators have a stable internet connection and are signed into the same Apple ID region (or at least have Apple Music available in their region).

Someone can’t edit? They might have joined as a listener only. Ask them to tap “Join” again or accept the collaboration invitation properly.

Playlist disappeared? It may have been deleted by the owner. If you’re the owner, check Recently Deleted in the Library.

Collaborator removed but still sees playlist? They may have cached it. Ask them to close and reopen the Music app.

Frequently Asked Questions
