How to Set Up and Use the iPhone Action Button

Guide 10-13233 · Updated · Step by step

The Action Button on iPhone 15 Pro and later models replaces the traditional mute switch with a customizable button that can launch apps, run shortcuts, toggle settings, and more. This guide shows you exactly how to configure it and get the most out of it, step by step.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, or iPhone 16 Pro Max (the Action Button is not available on other models)
  • iOS 17 or later (for iPhone 15 Pro models) or iOS 18 or later (for iPhone 16 models)
  • Optional: The Shortcuts app (pre-installed on iPhone) if you want to create custom actions

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Settings. Tap the gray gear icon on your home screen.
  2. Tap “Action Button. It’s near the top of the Settings list, right below your Apple ID name.
  3. Swipe through the preset actions. You’ll see a horizontal list of options: Silent Mode, Focus, Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Translate, Magnifier, Shortcut, and Accessibility. Swipe left or right to browse them.
  4. Choose a preset action. Tap any of these to select it. The button will instantly perform that action when pressed. For example, selecting “Camera means a press opens the Camera app.
  5. Select “Shortcut for custom actions. If you want the button to run a specific shortcut you’ve created in the Shortcuts app, swipe to “Shortcut and then tap “Choose a Shortcut… to pick one from your library.
  6. Set up an Accessibility action. If you choose “Accessibility, you can assign a feature like VoiceOver, Zoom, or Switch Control to the button. Tap the blue “Accessibility text to pick which one.
  7. Adjust the gesture settings (iPhone 16 models only). On iPhone 16 models, you can choose between “Press and Hold (default) and “Click under the “Gesture section. For “Press and Hold, you can also enable “Require Attention to prevent accidental presses when the phone is in your pocket.
  8. Test the button. Press the Action Button (the button on the left side above the volume buttons) to make sure it performs the action you selected. If it doesn’t work, check the settings again.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to press and hold. On iPhone 15 Pro models, the Action Button requires a press-and-hold to activate, not a quick tap. If you tap quickly, it might not respond.
  • Choosing a shortcut that doesn’t exist. If you pick “Shortcut but haven’t created any shortcuts, the button will do nothing. Make sure you have at least one shortcut in the Shortcuts app.
  • Not realizing the mute switch is gone. If you rely on the physical mute switch, you’ll need to assign “Silent Mode to the Action Button. Otherwise, you’ll have to mute via Control Center.
  • Ignoring the “Require Attention option. On iPhone 16 models, if you don’t enable this, the button might trigger accidentally when the phone is in your pocket or bag.

Tips

  • Use Focus modes for context. You can set the Action Button to activate a Focus mode (like Do Not Disturb or Driving). This is handy for automatically silencing notifications when you start working.
  • Create a custom shortcut that asks for input. In the Shortcuts app, you can build a shortcut that shows a menu when you press the button. For example, a menu with “Start Timer, “Play Playlist, and “Open App. This gives you multiple actions from one button.
  • Assign the button to “Flashlight for quick access. This is one of the most popular uses, especially if you frequently need a light.
  • Use the “Translate action for travel. If you’re abroad, set the button to open the Translate app, so you can quickly translate phrases.
  • Experiment with different actions. You can change the Action Button as often as you like. Don’t feel locked into one choice.

Troubleshooting

  • Button doesn’t respond. Make sure you’re pressing and holding (on iPhone 15 Pro) or clicking (on iPhone 16 with “Click gesture). If it still doesn’t work, restart your iPhone by holding the side button and either volume button until the power off slider appears, then slide to power off and turn it back on.
  • Action Button not showing in Settings. This only happens if your iPhone model doesn’t support it. Check that you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later. If you do, try updating iOS to the latest version.
  • Shortcut doesn’t run. Open the Shortcuts app and tap the shortcut to run it manually. If it fails, the shortcut may have an error. Edit the shortcut to fix it.
  • Button triggers accidentally. On iPhone 16 models, enable “Require Attention in the Action Button settings. On iPhone 15 Pro models, make sure you’re not pressing it inadvertently; consider using a case that covers the button partially.
  • Can’t mute with the button. If you previously used the mute switch, you need to explicitly assign “Silent Mode to the Action Button. It’s not the default.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the Action Button to take a photo?

Yes. Choose “Camera as the action, and a press will open the Camera app. You can then tap the shutter button on screen. There’s no way to trigger the shutter directly with the Action Button unless you create a shortcut that uses a “Take Photo action, but that only works in certain apps.

Does the Action Button work when the phone is locked?

Yes, most actions work even when the phone is locked, like Flashlight or Camera. However, some actions may require unlocking, depending on the shortcut or app.

Can I have multiple actions on the button?

Not directly, but you can create a shortcut that shows a menu of options when you press the button. That effectively gives you multiple actions.

Will the Action Button drain my battery?

No. The button only activates when pressed. It doesn’t consume power in standby.

Can I set the Action Button to turn on the flashlight with a long press?

Yes. Simply select “Flashlight as the action. On iPhone 15 Pro, a long press activates it; on iPhone 16, you can choose “Click or “Press and Hold.

Is the Action Button available on iPhone SE or older models?

No. The Action Button is only available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models.
