10 Tech How-To

Share Multiple Photos to Facebook at Once

Guide 10-29837 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to upload several photos to Facebook in a single post, saving you time and keeping your albums tidy. You’ll learn the steps for both the mobile app and the desktop website, plus how to edit captions, tag friends, and fix common upload problems.

What You’ll Need

  • A Facebook account (personal profile or Page)
  • The Facebook app installed on your phone or tablet (for mobile steps), or a web browser on your computer
  • The photos you want to share, saved on your device or in your phone’s gallery
  • A stable internet connection

Step-by-Step

On the Facebook Mobile App (iPhone & Android)

  1. Open the Facebook app and log in if you aren’t already.
  2. Tap the Photo icon at the top of your News Feed (it looks like a small picture of a mountain and sun). This opens the photo picker.
  3. Select the first photo you want to share. The app will show a blue checkmark on it.
  4. Keep tapping additional photos. Each one gets a checkmark. You can select up to 30 photos in one post (on most accounts).
  5. Once you’ve chosen all photos, tap Next in the top-right corner.
  6. Now you’re in the composer. Here you can:
    • Add a caption that appears above the whole set.
    • Tap any photo thumbnail to add an individual caption or edit that photo (rotate, crop, add text or stickers).
    • Tap Tag friends to tag people in the photos. You can tag multiple people per photo.
    • Tap Check in to add a location.
    • Tap the audience selector (e.g., “Friends” or “Public”) to choose who can see the post.
  7. When you’re happy, tap Post (the blue button at the bottom). Your photos will upload and appear as a single album post in your timeline.

On the Facebook Website (Desktop)

  1. Go to www.facebook.com and log in.
  2. At the top of your News Feed, click Photo/Video in the “What’s on your mind?” box.
  3. In the file picker that opens, select the first photo you want. Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) and click additional photos to select multiple at once. Or click one photo, then hold Shift and click another to select a range.
  4. Click Open. The photos will load into the composer as thumbnails.
  5. Add a caption to the whole set in the “Say something about this photo…” box.
  6. Click any thumbnail to add an individual caption or edit that photo.
  7. Use the buttons below the thumbnails to Tag friends, Add location, or change the audience.
  8. Click Post when ready. The photos will upload and appear as one post.

Common Mistakes

  • Selecting photos one by one in the composer: On mobile, if you tap the first photo and then tap “Add More” later, you might end up creating a second post. Always select all photos in the picker before tapping Next.
  • Forgetting to set the audience: The default audience is whatever you used last time. Double-check who can see the post before publishing, especially if the photos are private.
  • Uploading too many photos: Facebook’s limit is around 30 photos per post (some accounts may be lower). If you have more, split them into two posts or create an album.
  • Using the “Add to Album” option when you meant a post: That creates a permanent album on your profile, which is different from a simple photo post. Choose “Post” unless you really want an album.
  • Tagging too many people: Facebook may block the post if you tag many people in a short time. Tag only those actually in the photo.

Tips

  • To reorder photos before posting, press and hold a thumbnail (mobile) or drag it (desktop) to move it left or right.
  • If you want to edit a photo (crop, add text, or apply a filter), tap the pencil icon on that photo’s thumbnail before posting.
  • Use the “Make Cover Photo” or “Make Profile Picture” option only when you want to change your profile, not for a regular post.
  • For a cleaner look, add a single caption that describes the whole set, then add individual captions only where needed.
  • If you’re sharing from a phone, make sure the photos are saved to your device (not just in a cloud service) so they upload faster.

Troubleshooting

  • Photos upload slowly or fail: Check your internet connection. Try switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or vice versa). Restart the app or browser and try again.
  • “Something went wrong” error: This often happens when a photo file is corrupted or too large. Try uploading fewer photos at a time, or compress the images using a photo editor.
  • Photos appear out of order: On mobile, you can reorder after selection by dragging the thumbnails. On desktop, drag them in the composer. If that doesn’t work, delete the post and reselect in the correct order.
  • Tagging is not working: You can only tag friends who are in the photo and who have allowed tagging. If a friend isn’t showing up, type their name manually. If that fails, they may have restricted tagging on their profile.
  • The post shows only one photo instead of several: You may have accidentally tapped “Post” before selecting all photos. Check your timeline – you’ll see a separate post for each photo. Delete the extra posts and try again.
  • Photos are missing after posting: This can happen if you selected them but they didn’t upload fully. Wait a few minutes and refresh the page. If they’re still missing, delete the post and re-upload.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many photos can I share in one Facebook post?

Facebook allows up to 30 photos per post on both mobile and desktop. If you have more, you’ll need to create an album or split them into multiple posts.

Can I add a caption to each photo individually?

Yes. After selecting multiple photos, tap any thumbnail in the composer and you’ll see an option to add a caption for that specific photo. On desktop, click the thumbnail and type in the caption box.

Can I tag different people in different photos?

Absolutely. Tap the “Tag friends” button, then select a photo and tag the people in it. Repeat for each photo. Each photo can have its own set of tags.

Can I share the same set of photos to a Facebook Page I manage?

Yes. In the composer, tap your profile picture at the top and switch to the Page you manage. The process is the same, but the audience settings may differ based on the Page’s settings.

What’s the difference between a photo post and an album?

A photo post appears in your timeline as a single story with multiple photos. An album is a permanent collection that lives on your profile’s Photos section. You can create an album by selecting “Create album” in the photo picker instead of “Post”.

Can I edit a photo after I’ve posted it?

No. Once posted, you can only delete the photo or edit the caption. To edit the image itself, you would need to delete the post and re-upload the edited version.
