One-Tap iPhone Screenshot Sharing: Quick Guide

Guide 10-12444 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to share a screenshot on your iPhone with just one tap after taking it. You’ll learn the quickest way to send a screenshot to a friend, save it to Files, or add it to a note, without opening the Photos app or digging through your library. All you need is an iPhone with a recent iOS version (iOS 14 or later works best) and the app you want to share to installed.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone (any model that supports iOS 14 or later)
  • The app you want to share to (Messages, Mail, WhatsApp, etc.) installed and signed in
  • For the one-tap method, make sure you know the correct button combination to take a screenshot on your model

Step-by-Step

  1. Take a screenshot. On iPhones with Face ID, press the side button and the volume up button simultaneously. On iPhones with a Home button, press the side (or top) button and the Home button together. Release both quickly. You’ll see a thumbnail appear in the bottom-left corner of your screen.
  2. Tap the thumbnail. Immediately after taking the screenshot, a small preview appears. Tap it once. This opens the screenshot editor with markup tools at the bottom and a toolbar at the top.
  3. Look for the share icon. In the top-right corner of the editor, you’ll see a square with an arrow pointing up (the share button). Tap it. This opens the share sheet.
  4. Choose your app or action. The share sheet shows a row of suggested contacts and apps at the top, and a list of actions below. Tap the app you want to share to (e.g., Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or Notes). If you don’t see it, scroll down to find it in the list or tap “More” to add it to your favorites.
  5. Send or save. Depending on the app, you’ll either be taken directly to a new message with the screenshot attached, or you’ll get a confirmation. For Messages, type your recipient and hit send. For Notes, choose a note or create a new one. For Files, pick a location and tap “Save.”
  6. Done – that’s one tap after the screenshot. The entire process from tapping the thumbnail to sending takes about two seconds. You never have to leave the current screen or open Photos.

Common Mistakes

  • Waiting too long to tap the thumbnail. The thumbnail disappears after about 5 seconds. If you miss it, you’ll have to go to Photos and share from there (which defeats the purpose).
  • Swiping the thumbnail away. Many people accidentally swipe left on the thumbnail to dismiss it. That’s the “delete” gesture. If you do that, the screenshot is gone (unless you have iCloud Photos, where it might still be in Recently Deleted).
  • Not using the share icon. Some users tap the thumbnail and then try to copy the image or use the “Done” button. The share icon is the only way to get the share sheet directly.
  • Confusing the share sheet with the action list. The share sheet has two parts: the top row of apps and the bottom list of actions like “Copy” and “Save to Files.” Tapping an app sends the screenshot there; tapping an action performs that action.

Tips

  • Customize your share sheet. In the share sheet, scroll to the bottom and tap “Edit Actions.” You can add or remove items like “Save to Files” or “Add to Notes” so they appear in the top row for faster access.
  • Use AirDrop for nearby devices. If you’re sharing to your own Mac or iPad, AirDrop is often the fastest option. It appears in the top row of the share sheet when compatible devices are nearby.
  • Annotate before sharing. While in the editor, you can draw, add text, or highlight before tapping share. This saves an extra step later.
  • Full-page screenshots. On Safari or other scrolling apps, tap the “Full Page” tab at the top of the editor to capture the entire webpage. Then share as a PDF.
  • Quick delete after sharing. If you don’t want to keep the screenshot, after sharing you can tap “Done” in the editor and choose “Delete Screenshot.” This keeps your Photos library clean.

Troubleshooting

  • Thumbnail disappears before you can tap it. This happens if you take a screenshot and then do something else. Just take the screenshot again. To give yourself more time, you can enable “Screenshot” in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap, but that’s a different feature.
  • Share sheet doesn’t show the app you want. Tap “More” at the bottom of the list and toggle on the app you need. If it’s still not there, the app might not support sharing images. Check if the app has its own share button (e.g., in WhatsApp, you’d use the attach button).
  • Share sheet is slow or unresponsive. Force-quit the app you’re in and try again. If it persists, restart your iPhone. This is usually a temporary glitch.
  • You accidentally swiped the thumbnail away. The screenshot is deleted. If you have iCloud Photos, check the Recently Deleted album in Photos. You can recover it within 30 days.
  • The screenshot is saved but not shared. Some actions like “Save to Files” don’t give a confirmation. Check the destination folder. If you tapped an app and nothing happened, try a different app or use “Copy” and then paste into the app manually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I share a screenshot without opening the editor?

Yes, you can long-press the thumbnail and drag it directly into a conversation in Messages or Mail if you’re in that app. However, this only works if the target app is already open and visible.

Does this work for screen recordings too?

No, screen recordings don’t produce a thumbnail. You have to go to Photos to share them. The one-tap method is only for still screenshots.

Can I change the default share destination?

No, iOS doesn’t let you set a default. But you can reorder the apps in the share sheet by going to the share sheet, tapping “Edit Actions,” and dragging your most-used apps to the top.

Why is my screenshot not showing the share icon?

The share icon is only visible in the editor after you tap the thumbnail. If you’re looking at the screenshot in Photos, you’ll see a different share button. Make sure you tap the thumbnail immediately after taking the screenshot.

Can I share a screenshot to multiple apps at once?

No, the share sheet sends to one app at a time. For multiple destinations, you’d need to share it once, then repeat the process from Photos.

What if I want to share a screenshot from an app that blocks screenshots?

Some apps (like banking apps) intentionally block screenshots. You’ll see a black screen or a message. There’s no workaround that respects the app’s security settings. You can try using another device to take a photo of the screen, but that’s not a screenshot.
