10 Tech How-To

Show or Hide WhatsApp Status From Specific Contacts

Guide 10-9116 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to control who can see your WhatsApp Status updates. You can hide your status from specific contacts or show it only to selected people, giving you privacy while still sharing moments with friends and family. No special tools are needed—everything is done within the WhatsApp app on your phone.

What You’ll Need

  • An active WhatsApp account on your phone
  • The WhatsApp app updated to a recent version (the steps are for the current versions on Android and iPhone)
  • Your contacts’ phone numbers saved in your phone’s address book (WhatsApp uses these to list contacts)

Step-by-Step

  1. Open WhatsApp on your phone. Make sure you’re on the main chat list screen.
  2. Go to Settings: tap the three dots menu (Android) or the gear icon (iPhone) in the top corner.
  3. Open Account > Privacy: In Settings, tap “Account,” then “Privacy.”
  4. Tap “Status”: Under the Privacy menu, find and tap “Status.” This opens the status privacy controls.
  5. Choose your audience: You’ll see three options:
    • My Contacts: Everyone in your contacts can see your status updates.
    • My Contacts Except…: Choose specific contacts who will NOT see your status. This is the “hide from” option.
    • Only Share With…: Choose specific contacts who WILL see your status. Everyone else won’t see it.
  6. Select contacts: If you chose “My Contacts Except…,” tap the checkmark next to the contacts you want to hide your status from. If you chose “Only Share With…,” tap the contacts you want to include. You can search for names using the search bar at the top.
  7. Confirm your selection: After selecting, tap the checkmark (Android) or “Done” (iPhone) in the top corner to save your changes.
  8. Test it (optional): Ask a friend who you’ve hidden from to check if they can see your status. They should not see it in their Status tab.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing up the two options: “My Contacts Except…” hides from selected people; “Only Share With…” shows only to selected people. They are opposites; choosing the wrong one can expose your status to everyone or hide it from almost everyone.
  • Forgetting to save: On some phones, you must tap the checkmark or “Done” to save. If you just back out, your changes may not apply.
  • Assuming it affects past statuses: Changing the privacy setting only affects future status updates. A status you already posted will remain visible to whoever saw it before you changed the setting.
  • Expecting it to hide replies: Hiding your status from someone does not stop them from replying to a status they saw earlier, nor does it hide your status from group chats where they might see a forwarded screenshot.

Tips

  • Use the “Only Share With…” option for a small trusted group: If you only want close friends or family to see your updates, this is often easier than listing everyone you want to exclude.
  • Review your list periodically: People get added to your contacts, and you may want to adjust who sees your status. Check the privacy settings occasionally.
  • Remember that status privacy is per-status: You can change the audience for each status update before you post it. The default is whatever you set in Privacy, but you can tap “Status privacy” on the compose screen to change it for that one post.
  • You can also hide your own viewing of others’ statuses: If you don’t want to see a contact’s status, you can mute them by long-pressing their status in the Status tab and selecting “Mute.”

Troubleshooting

  • I changed the setting, but the person still sees my status: First, confirm you saved the changes. Then check if you selected the correct option (Except vs. Only). If you’re using “Only Share With…,” make sure the person is not in that list. Also, note that if the person is not in your contacts, they can’t see your status anyway unless you share a link (which you can’t for regular statuses).
  • I can’t find the Status option in Privacy: Make sure your WhatsApp is updated. On older versions, the path might be slightly different, but it’s always under Settings > Account > Privacy > Status. If you still can’t find it, try restarting the app.
  • I want to hide from someone who isn’t in my contacts: You can’t hide from someone who isn’t in your contacts because they can’t see your status anyway. If they have your number, they can message you, but they won’t see statuses unless you add them.
  • My status is still visible after I changed the setting: As mentioned, the change applies to new statuses. If you have an active status, it will remain visible until it expires (usually after 24 hours). To remove it immediately, delete the status from your Status tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hide my status from someone without them knowing?

Yes, WhatsApp does not notify anyone when you change your status privacy settings. The person will simply stop seeing your new statuses, but they won’t get an alert about it.

Does hiding my status from someone also hide my messages from them?

No. Status privacy is separate from chat privacy. Hiding your status does not affect your ability to message each other or see each other’s online status.

Can I show my status to only one person?

Yes. Choose “Only Share With…” and select just that one contact. Then only that person will see your status updates.

What happens if I add a new contact after setting my privacy?

If you chose “My Contacts Except…,” the new contact will be able to see your status by default (since they’re not on the exception list). If you chose “Only Share With…,” the new contact will not see your status unless you add them to the list.

Can I hide my status from someone on WhatsApp Web or Desktop?

No, the privacy settings for status can only be changed on your phone. WhatsApp Web and Desktop mirror your phone’s settings but don’t allow you to edit them.

If I block someone, can they see my status?

No. Blocked contacts cannot see your status updates, your profile photo, or your last seen. Blocking is a more extreme measure that also prevents them from calling or messaging you.
