Sync Android Contacts to Google: Full Guide

Guide 10-23954 · Updated · Step by step

This guide walks you through syncing the contacts stored on your Android phone to your Google account, so they appear on all your devices and in Gmail. You will need your Google account credentials and a stable internet connection — that is all.

What You’ll Need

  • An Android phone (any recent version, from Android 8 to the latest)
  • A Google account (Gmail address and password) that you want the contacts saved to
  • A Wi-Fi or mobile data connection
  • Your phone unlocked and charged enough to complete the process

Step-by-Step

  1. Open the Settings app. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon, or find Settings in your app drawer.
  2. Scroll to Accounts. Depending on your phone brand (Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, etc.), the menu may say “Accounts and backup,” “Users and accounts,” or simply “Accounts.” Tap it.
  3. Select “Manage accounts” or “Accounts.” This shows a list of all accounts currently on the phone.
  4. Tap your Google account. If you have more than one, choose the one you want to sync contacts to. If you don’t see a Google account, tap “Add account,” choose Google, sign in, and then continue from step 5.
  5. Open “Account sync.” On most phones, this is a button at the bottom of the account screen. On Samsung devices, you may need to tap “Sync account” or “Sync now.”
  6. Check the Contacts toggle. You will see a list of items like Calendar, Chrome, Contacts, Drive, Gmail, and Photos. Make sure the switch next to “Contacts” is turned on (blue or green).
  7. Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner. Choose “Sync now.” This forces the phone to upload your contacts immediately instead of waiting for the next automatic sync.
  8. Wait for the sync to finish. A spinner or “Syncing” text appears next to Contacts. When it stops, your contacts are on Google.
  9. Verify on a computer. Open contacts.google.com in a browser and check that your phone’s contacts appear there. If they do, the sync worked.

Common Mistakes

  • Syncing to the wrong Google account. If you have work and personal accounts, it is easy to turn on sync for the wrong one. Double-check the email address shown at the top of the account screen.
  • Contacts stored on the phone or SIM, not the Google account. Contacts saved as “Phone” or “SIM” storage do not sync. You must move them to the Google account first (see Tips below).
  • Turning on sync but not tapping “Sync now.” Automatic sync can be delayed for hours. Manual sync is immediate.
  • Disabling the Contacts app permission. If the Contacts app cannot read your phone’s storage, it cannot upload anything. Check app permissions in Settings > Apps > Contacts.
  • Assuming sync is two-way. It is, but only for contacts already in the Google account. Contacts stored only on the phone will not appear on other devices until they are moved or exported.

Tips

  • Move phone-only contacts to Google before syncing. Open the Contacts app, tap the hamburger menu (☰), choose “Settings” or “Manage contacts,” then select “Move device contacts to” and pick your Google account. This converts local contacts into synced ones.
  • Export a backup first. In the Contacts app, go to Settings > Export and save a .vcf file to your phone or Google Drive. This protects you if something goes wrong.
  • Keep one primary Google account for contacts. Having contacts split across two accounts leads to duplicates and confusion. Consolidate to a single account.
  • Use the Google Contacts web app to clean up duplicates. After syncing, visit contacts.google.com and use “Merge & fix” to combine duplicate entries.
  • Sync over Wi-Fi for large contact lists. If you have thousands of contacts, the first sync can use a lot of data. Wi-Fi is faster and avoids mobile data charges.

Troubleshooting

Sync button is grayed out or “Sync now” does nothing. First, check your internet connection. Then toggle the Contacts switch off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. Try again. If it still fails, restart the phone.

Contacts appear on the phone but not on Google. This usually means the contacts are stored as “Phone” or “SIM” contacts. Follow the tip above to move them to the Google account. After moving, tap “Sync now” again.

Sync keeps failing with a “sync is currently experiencing problems” message. This is often a temporary Google server issue. Wait 15–30 minutes and try again. If it persists, remove the Google account from the phone (Settings > Accounts > your account > Remove account) and re-add it. This does not delete your data, but it will require you to sign in again.

Only some contacts synced. Check if the missing contacts are in a group that is excluded from sync. In the Contacts app, open each contact and confirm it shows “Google” as the storage location. Contacts with a “Phone” label will not sync.

Duplicates appeared after syncing. This is normal when you had the same contact on both the phone and Google. Use the “Merge & fix” tool on contacts.google.com to combine them automatically.

Contacts synced but are missing photos or custom ringtones. Google Contacts stores names, numbers, emails, and addresses, but custom ringtones and some local-only fields may not transfer. Re-assign those on the phone after sync.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will syncing delete my existing Google contacts? No. Syncing merges your phone contacts into your Google account. It does not remove anything already in Google unless you delete it manually.

How long does the first sync take? For a few hundred contacts, it usually takes under a minute. For thousands, it can take 5–10 minutes depending on your connection.

Do I need to keep sync turned on forever? Yes, if you want new contacts to automatically appear on Google and your other devices. If you turn it off, future contacts you add on the phone will not sync.

Can I sync contacts to Google without using the phone’s Settings? Yes. Open the Contacts app, tap your profile picture or the three-line menu, go to Settings, and select “Google” as the default account. Then add contacts normally — they will sync automatically.

What happens if I sign out of Google on my phone? Your synced contacts remain in Google. They will disappear from the phone until you sign back in and re-enable contact sync.

Are my contacts synced to all Google apps? Yes. Once synced, your contacts appear in Gmail, Google Meet, Google Messages (if you use it), and any other Google service that uses your contact list.
