How to Truly Hide a Photo on Your iPhone

Guide 10-7380 · Updated · Step by step

If you’ve ever used the iPhone’s built-in Hidden album, you know it’s not really hidden—anyone who opens the Photos app can find it. This guide shows you how to actually hide a photo so it doesn’t appear in your camera roll, your Memories, or even in the Hidden album itself, using only the tools already on your iPhone.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone running iOS 14 or later (for the Hidden album toggling step)
  • Your Apple ID password or Face ID/Touch ID (to re-enable the Hidden album later)
  • Optional: a second app like Notes or Files, which are pre-installed

Step-by-Step

  1. Move the photo to the Hidden album. Open the Photos app, tap Select in the top right, choose the photo(s) you want to hide, then tap the share icon (square with an arrow) at the bottom left. Scroll down and tap Hide, then confirm by tapping Hide Photo. The photo disappears from your main library and moves to the Hidden album.
  2. Turn off the Hidden album entirely. Go to Settings > Photos. Scroll down and toggle off the switch next to Hidden Album. This removes the Hidden album from the Photos app entirely—it won’t show up in the Albums tab, and the photos inside become invisible in the Photos interface.
  3. Verify it’s gone. Open the Photos app and check your Library, Albums, and Search. The photo should not appear anywhere. If you search for a keyword that matches the photo (like “beachâ€), it won’t show up either.
  4. For extra security, move the photo out of Photos entirely. If you want the photo to be truly inaccessible through the Photos app, put it in a password-protected note instead. Open the photo in Photos, tap the share icon, choose Notes, select a note (or create a new one), and tap Save. Then delete the original from your library and from the Hidden album (select it, tap the trash icon, then delete again from Recently Deleted). Now the only copy lives inside a note.
  5. Lock the note. Open the Notes app, find the note with your photo, tap the more (…) button, and choose Lock. Set a password if you haven’t already (use a different password from your iPhone passcode for best security), and confirm with Face ID or Touch ID. Now the note—and the photo—can only be opened with that password.
  6. Hide the note itself (optional). In the Notes app, swipe left on the locked note, tap the lock icon, and choose Move to Recently Deleted? No—actually, you can just leave it locked. But if you want to hide the note from the main notes list, you can move it to a folder that you don’t use often, or simply keep it locked. Locked notes are already hidden behind a password prompt when opened.
  7. Double-check other places. Photos can appear in other apps, like WhatsApp or Instagram, if you’ve previously shared them. To prevent that, go to Settings > Privacy > Photos and review which apps have access. Set any app you don’t want to see your library to “Noneâ€ or “Selected Photos.â€

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the Hidden album on. The most common mistake is hiding a photo but not disabling the Hidden album in Settings. Anyone who knows where to look can tap Albums and see the Hidden folder.
  • Forgetting Recently Deleted. Deleting a photo doesn’t remove it immediately—it stays in Recently Deleted for 30 days. If you delete a photo from your library, also go to Recently Deleted and delete it there.
  • Using the same password for Notes as your iPhone. If someone knows your iPhone passcode, they can guess your Notes password. Use a unique password for locked notes.
  • Not checking iCloud. If you have iCloud Photos enabled, your hidden photos still sync to iCloud. They won’t appear on other devices if you’ve turned off the Hidden album, but they’re still in your iCloud storage. For true privacy, you’d need to remove them from iCloud entirely (which is more complex).

Tips

  • Use the Notes method for sensitive photos. The Hidden album plus disabling it is good, but the only way to make a photo truly inaccessible via the Photos app is to move it to a locked note and delete the original.
  • Turn off “Show Hidden Albumâ€ on all devices. If you have an iPad or Mac, repeat step 2 on each device, or the Hidden album might reappear when you sync.
  • Consider a third-party vault app. Apps like private photo vaults add an extra layer of security, but they require trusting another app with your data. The Notes method is built-in and free.
  • Use Screen Time to restrict Photos. If you’re worried about someone changing your Settings, you can use Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions to prevent changes to Photos settings.

Troubleshooting

  • Hidden album toggle is grayed out. This happens if you have restrictions enabled. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and make sure Photos is allowed.
  • Hidden photos still appear in Search. If you’ve hidden a photo but it shows up in a search, it’s likely because the photo was indexed before you hid it. Try restarting your iPhone, or toggle the Hidden album off and on again.
  • You can’t find the Hidden album after re-enabling it. Go back to Settings > Photos and toggle Hidden Album back on. The album will appear under Utilities in the Albums tab.
  • Notes won’t let you lock a note. Locking requires that you have a password set up. Go to Settings > Notes > Password and set one first. Also, notes with images can be locked, but if you’re using an older iOS version, you may need to update.
  • The photo is still in iCloud. If you want to remove it from iCloud entirely, you’d have to turn off iCloud Photos, which would affect all your photos. A simpler workaround: delete the photo from all devices, then turn off iCloud Photos and back on—but this is risky and may cause other photos to disappear. Better to just keep it in a locked note and accept that it’s in iCloud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hide a photo without moving it to the Hidden album?

No, the Hidden album is the only built-in hiding mechanism. But by disabling the Hidden album itself, the photo becomes invisible in the Photos app.

Will hidden photos show up in my iCloud backup?

Yes, hidden photos are still backed up to iCloud. They don’t show in your library, but they exist in your iCloud data. If you need absolute privacy, use the Notes method and delete the original from iCloud.

Can someone still see hidden photos if they have my iPhone?

If you’ve turned off the Hidden album, they won’t see them in the Photos app. But if they know you’ve hidden photos, they could go to Settings > Photos and re-enable the Hidden album. That’s why the Notes method is safer—it requires a password.

Does hiding a photo also hide it from other apps?

No. Apps that already have permission to access your photo library can still see hidden photos if they access the full library. You need to revoke app permissions in Settings > Privacy > Photos.

How do I unhide a photo later?

Go to Settings > Photos and turn Hidden Album back on. Then open the Hidden album, select the photo, tap the share icon, and choose Unhide. The photo returns to your library.

Is there a way to hide photos without using the Hidden album at all?

Yes, the Notes method described above completely bypasses the Hidden album. You can also use a third-party vault app, but the Notes method is built-in and free.
