FaceTime on Android: How to Join Calls

Guide 10-6609 · Updated · Step by step

FaceTime is Apple’s video calling app, and while it isn’t available as a native Android app, Apple opened up participation in FaceTime calls through a web browser. This guide shows you how to join a FaceTime call from an Android phone or tablet, what you need, and how to handle common problems.

What You’ll Need

  • An Android device with a modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Edge are recommended).
  • A link to a FaceTime call sent by an Apple user (from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac).
  • A stable internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
  • Permission from the call organizer — they must create a link and share it with you.

Step-by-Step

  1. Receive the FaceTime link. The person hosting the call will send you a link via text message, email, WhatsApp, or any other messaging app. It usually looks like a web address starting with https://facetime.apple.com/ followed by a long string of characters.
  2. Tap the link. On your Android device, tap the link. It will open in your default web browser. If it doesn’t open automatically, copy the link and paste it into the address bar of your browser.
  3. Enter your name. The FaceTime web page will load and ask you to type your name. This is the name that will be shown to other call participants. Type your name and tap the Continue button.
  4. Allow camera and microphone access. Your browser will ask for permission to use your camera and microphone. Tap Allow or Yes when prompted. If you block these permissions, you won’t be able to join the call with video or audio.
  5. Tap Join. After permissions are granted, you’ll see a screen with a Join button. Tap it to enter the waiting room.
  6. Wait for the host to admit you. The host of the call will see that you’re waiting and will let you in. You’ll be connected automatically once they do.
  7. Use the on-screen controls. Once in the call, you’ll see controls at the bottom of your screen. Use them to mute your microphone, turn your camera on or off, switch between front and rear cameras, and leave the call when you’re done.

Common Mistakes

  • Using an unsupported browser. Older or less common browsers may not support FaceTime’s web features. Stick with the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
  • Blocking camera or microphone access. If you accidentally tap “Block” when the browser asks for permission, the call won’t work. You’ll need to go into your browser’s site settings and allow access for the FaceTime page.
  • Expecting to start a call. Android users can only join calls that Apple users initiate. You cannot create a FaceTime call from an Android device.
  • Ignoring the waiting room. If you tap Join and nothing seems to happen, you might be in the waiting room. The host has to manually let you in, so be patient.

Tips

  • Test your camera and mic before joining. Many video call pages let you preview your camera feed before you join. If you see a black screen, your camera may be in use by another app or blocked by the browser.
  • Use a headset. A wired or Bluetooth headset can improve audio quality and reduce echo, especially in noisy environments.
  • Keep your browser updated. FaceTime web relies on modern web standards. An outdated browser can cause connection issues or missing controls.
  • Ask the host to use the latest version of iOS or macOS. Older Apple devices may not generate the shareable link properly.
  • Close other tabs and apps. Video calls use a lot of bandwidth and processing power. Closing unnecessary apps can improve call quality.

Troubleshooting

The link doesn’t open or shows an error. Make sure you’re using a supported browser. Try copying the link and opening it in a private/incognito window to rule out extension conflicts. If it still fails, ask the host to generate a new link.

No video or audio. Check that you allowed camera and microphone access when the browser asked. On Chrome, tap the lock icon next to the URL, go to Site settings, and make sure Camera and Microphone are set to “Allow.” Then reload the page and try again.

The call connects but drops frequently. This is usually a network issue. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router or switch to a cellular connection if Wi-Fi is weak. Close other apps that might be using bandwidth, like video streaming or large downloads.

You’re stuck in the waiting room. The host may not have noticed you. Send them a text message or message them through another app to let them know you’re waiting. They need to tap the notification that you’re trying to join.

You can’t hear anyone but they can hear you. Check that your device’s volume isn’t muted and that the media volume is turned up. If you’re using a headset, try unplugging it and using the speaker.

The screen shows “FaceTime requires a camera.” Your device may not have a working camera, or the browser can’t access it. Restart your device and try again. If you’re using an older Android tablet without a camera, video calling won’t work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download a FaceTime app on Android? No. Apple does not offer a FaceTime app for Android. The only way to join a FaceTime call is through the web browser link that an Apple user sends you.

Can I start a FaceTime call from my Android phone? No. Android users can only join calls that are started by someone using an Apple device. You cannot initiate a FaceTime call yourself.

Is FaceTime on Android free? Yes. Joining a FaceTime call through the web link is free, but it uses your data plan if you’re not on Wi-Fi. The host’s data or Wi-Fi usage also applies.

Can I use FaceTime on Android without an Apple ID? Yes. You don’t need an Apple ID to join a call. You only need the link and to enter your name.

Why does the FaceTime web page look different from the app? The web version is a simplified interface designed for participants. It has fewer features than the native app — for example, you can’t share your screen or use reactions like the Apple app users can.

Can I use FaceTime on Android in a group call? Yes. If the host creates a group FaceTime link, multiple Android users can join using the same link, as long as the host admits each one.
