Hold Assist iPhone: How to Use It

Guide 10-12289 · Updated · Step by step

Hold Assist is a built-in iPhone accessibility feature that lets you keep a button pressed without actually holding your finger on it. It is designed for people who have difficulty holding buttons, but it is also handy for taking long-exposure photos, recording voice memos, or any app where you normally have to press and hold. This guide walks you through turning it on, using it, and fixing common issues.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone running iOS 17 or later (Hold Assist is part of AssistiveTouch).
  • Access to Settings app.

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Settings. Tap the gray gear icon on your home screen or in your App Library.
  2. Go to Accessibility. Scroll down and tap “Accessibility.”
  3. Tap Touch. Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap “Touch.”
  4. Tap AssistiveTouch. It is near the top of the Touch settings. If it is off, toggle it on.
  5. Enable Hold Assist. Scroll down within AssistiveTouch settings and find “Hold Assist.” Toggle it on. You will see a small description: “Use a tap to hold a button.”
  6. Test it. Open any app where you normally press and hold, like the Camera app for a burst photo or the Voice Memos app to start recording. Touch and hold the button as you normally would. After a moment, a small white circle with a plus sign appears above your finger. Lift your finger – the button stays pressed.
  7. Release the hold. When you are done, tap the white circle. The button is released, and the action stops.
  8. Adjust the activation time (optional). In AssistiveTouch settings, tap “Hold Assist” again. You can change “Activation Time” from the default (about 0.5 seconds) to a longer or shorter duration. This controls how long you must hold before the circle appears.

Common Mistakes

  • Not enabling AssistiveTouch first. Hold Assist only works when AssistiveTouch is on. If you toggle Hold Assist but AssistiveTouch is off, it will not do anything.
  • Holding too briefly. If you lift your finger before the white circle appears, the hold is not activated. You need to hold for the activation time (default 0.5 seconds).
  • Tapping the circle too early. The circle appears while you are still holding. If you tap it with another finger before lifting, it may release the hold prematurely or do nothing. Wait until you lift your finger.
  • Confusing Hold Assist with Touch Accommodations. Touch Accommodations (also in Touch settings) changes how the iPhone interprets touches, like ignoring repeated taps. Hold Assist is specifically for keeping a button pressed.

Tips

  • Use it for long exposures. In the Camera app, hold the shutter button to activate burst mode or a long exposure (if you have an iPhone with that feature). Hold Assist lets you keep the shutter pressed without fatigue.
  • Combine with Switch Control. If you use Switch Control, Hold Assist works together. You can set a switch to activate the hold, making it even easier.
  • Set a shorter activation time. If you find the default 0.5 seconds too long, reduce it to 0.3 seconds. If you accidentally trigger it, increase it.
  • Use it for drag-and-drop. Some apps require you to hold an item to drag it. Hold Assist can keep the item “grabbed” while you move your finger to the target location.
  • Remember to turn it off when not needed. If you only need it occasionally, you can toggle it off in Settings. Leaving it on may cause unexpected holds in apps that have long-press gestures.

Troubleshooting

  • Hold Assist is grayed out in Settings. This happens if AssistiveTouch is off. Turn on AssistiveTouch first, then Hold Assist becomes available.
  • The white circle does not appear. Check that Hold Assist is toggled on. Also check that the app you are using actually supports press-and-hold. Some apps use a different gesture, like a long tap with no action after release.
  • The button releases immediately when I lift my finger. You may have tapped the circle accidentally. Try again, and make sure you lift your finger straight up, not sliding it.
  • It works in some apps but not others. Some apps (especially games) may override the system gesture. There is no fix for that; the app must allow the system to intercept the touch.
  • After updating iOS, Hold Assist stopped working. Sometimes a software update resets accessibility settings. Go back to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and re-enable Hold Assist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Hold Assist work with any button?

It works with any button that responds to a press-and-hold gesture. It does not work with buttons that only respond to a quick tap, because the system needs time to recognize the hold.

Can I use Hold Assist without turning on AssistiveTouch?

No. Hold Assist is a sub-feature of AssistiveTouch. You must have AssistiveTouch enabled, but you do not need to use the on-screen AssistiveTouch menu button.

Will Hold Assist drain my battery?

No. It is a software feature that only activates when you press and hold. It uses negligible battery.

Can I change the activation time?

Yes. In Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch > Hold Assist, you can adjust the activation time from 0.3 to 1.0 seconds.

Does Hold Assist work with Apple Pencil?

Yes, it works with Apple Pencil on compatible iPads. The same hold gesture applies.

Is Hold Assist the same as “Slow Keys”?

No. Slow Keys (in Touch Accommodations) adds a delay before a tap is recognized. Hold Assist is specifically for keeping a button pressed after you lift your finger.
