How to View Your Own Story on Snapchat

Guide 10-8050 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you exactly how to view your own Snapchat Story, whether you want to replay a snap, check who has seen it, or just relive your day. You’ll learn the quick taps to open your Story, how to navigate through your snaps, and how to see the viewer list. No special setup is needed—just your phone with Snapchat installed and logged in.

What You’ll Need

  • A smartphone with the Snapchat app installed (iOS or Android)
  • An active Snapchat account with at least one Story snap posted
  • Internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data)

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Snapchat – Tap the Snapchat app icon on your phone. You’ll land on the camera screen.
  2. Go to your Profile – Tap your Bitmoji or profile icon in the top-left corner of the camera screen. This opens your profile page.
  3. Find the “My Story” section – On your profile, look for the section labeled “My Story” (it’s usually near the top, below your stats). You’ll see a thumbnail of your latest Story snap, along with the time it was posted.
  4. Tap on “My Story” – Tap anywhere on the “My Story” tile. This will open your Story viewer, starting with your most recent snap.
  5. Navigate through your snaps – If your Story has multiple snaps, tap the right side of the screen to advance to the next snap, or tap the left side to go back. You can also swipe left or right to move between snaps.
  6. View each snap – Each snap will play for its duration (or until you tap to skip). You can watch it as many times as you like—there’s no limit on your own Story views.
  7. Check who viewed your Story – While viewing a snap, swipe up on the screen (or tap the eye icon at the bottom) to see the list of friends who have viewed that specific snap. You can also see the total view count.
  8. Exit the viewer – To leave your Story, tap the X in the top-left corner or press the back button on your phone. You’ll return to your profile.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing “My Story” with “Spotlight” or “Memories” – Your Story is a separate section on your profile. Make sure you tap the tile that says “My Story,” not the “Memories” icon (which looks like a square with a play button) or the “Spotlight” tab.
  • Not tapping the profile icon first – Some users try to view their Story from the camera screen by swiping right on the friends list. That only shows your friends’ stories, not your own. Always go to your profile first.
  • Forgetting that your Story is chronological – Your Story plays in the order you posted the snaps. If you’re looking for a specific snap, you may need to tap through several to find it.
  • Thinking you can’t view your own Story – Some users assume that because it’s their own content, they can’t watch it. In fact, you can view it as many times as you want, and it won’t affect your view count.

Tips

  • Use the progress bar – At the top of the screen, you’ll see a thin progress bar for each snap. This shows how long the snap has been playing and helps you know when to tap to the next one.
  • Save your Story snaps – If you want to keep a snap forever, tap the download icon (downward arrow) at the bottom while viewing it. This saves it to your Memories.
  • Check your Story views regularly – The viewer list updates in real time, so you can see who has watched your Story as soon as they do. Swipe up on any snap to refresh the list.
  • Use the “Edit Story” feature – On your profile, tap the three dots next to “My Story” to delete snaps, add more, or change the cover image.
  • Private Stories – If you have a Private Story, you can view it the same way, but only the friends you selected will see it. The viewer list will only show those friends.

Troubleshooting

Story won’t load or is blank – If your Story appears blank or won’t play, check your internet connection. Try closing the app completely and reopening it. If that doesn’t work, log out and log back in. If the issue persists, restart your phone.

Can’t find “My Story” on your profile – This usually means you haven’t posted any snaps to your Story yet. To create one, take a photo or video, tap the “Send To” button at the bottom right, then select “My Story” and hit send. After you post, it will appear on your profile.

Viewer list is not showing – If you swipe up and don’t see a list, it might be because the snap is older than 24 hours (after which it disappears) or because you’re viewing a snap that was posted to a Private Story. For public Stories, the list should appear. Make sure you’re viewing the snap, not just the Story cover.

Story is playing in the wrong order – Snapchat automatically plays your Story in the order you posted. If you want to reorder, you’ll need to delete and repost the snaps in the desired order. There’s no manual reordering feature.

App crashes when opening your Story – This is often a temporary glitch. Force-close the app (swipe it away from recent apps) and reopen it. If it keeps happening, update Snapchat to the latest version from your app store, or reinstall the app (make sure your Memories are backed up).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I view my own Story without anyone knowing?

Yes. Viewing your own Story does not notify anyone, and it does not count as a “view” in the viewer list. Only other people’s views are counted.

Why can’t I see the viewer list on my Story?

The viewer list appears only when you swipe up on an individual snap. If you’re on the Story cover (the first screen), you won’t see it. Also, if your Story is older than 24 hours, it’s gone, so you can’t view it anymore.

Can I view my Story after 24 hours?

No. Stories are automatically deleted after 24 hours. However, if you’ve saved any snaps to Memories, you can view them anytime from the Memories tab.

Does viewing my own Story increase my view count?

No. Your own views are not counted. The view count you see is only from other users.

How do I delete a snap from my Story?

Go to your profile, tap the three dots next to “My Story,” then select “Delete” and choose the snap you want to remove. You can also delete a snap while viewing it by tapping the trash icon.

Can I see who viewed my Story multiple times?

No. Snapchat only shows the list of friends who have viewed your Story, not how many times each person viewed it. The view count is the total number of views from all friends, but individual repeat views are not shown.
