This calculator turns the length and width of a lawn, field or lot into acres. Enter the two sides in feet; you get acres, square feet, square metres and hectares.

Formula

Area (ft²) = length × width. Acres = ft² ÷ 43,560 (one acre is exactly 43,560 ft²). Square metres = ft² × 0.09290304. Hectares = m² ÷ 10,000.

Worked Example

A lot 150 ft by 120 ft.

1. Area = 150 × 120 = 18,000 ft²
2. Acres = 18,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.4132 acres
3. Square metres = 18,000 × 0.09290304 = 1,672.25 m²
4. Hectares = 1,672.25 ÷ 10,000 = 0.1672 ha

How to use the result

Rates on seed, fertilizer and lime bags are often per 1,000 ft² or per acre; use the square feet or acres result to scale them. Lawn area is usually smaller than lot area once the house, drive and beds are taken out.

Limits and common mistakes
