This calculator answers “what percent of the total is this part?”. Enter the part and the total; you get the part as a percentage of the total, the remainder and the remainder’s percentage. For example, how much of a 180 ft² yard a 45 ft² bed takes up.

Formula

Percent = part ÷ total × 100. Remainder = total − part. Remainder percent = 100 − percent. The part cannot be larger than the total here; use a percent change calculator for growth.

  • part: the piece you are asking about
  • total: the whole it belongs to

Worked Example

A 45 ft² flower bed in a 180 ft² front yard.

  1. Percent = 45 ÷ 180 × 100 = 25.00%
  2. Remainder = 180 − 45 = 135.00
  3. Remainder percent = 100 − 25 = 75.00%

How to use the result

Use the same unit for part and total (both square feet, both hours, both dollars). The result reads as “the part is X percent of the total”.

Examples: share of a yard

Part Total Percent of total
50 ft² 1000 ft² 5.0%
120 ft² 1000 ft² 12.0%
250 ft² 1000 ft² 25.0%
300 ft² 2500 ft² 12.0%
450 ft² 1800 ft² 25.0%
800 ft² 3200 ft² 25.0%
1000 ft² 4000 ft² 25.0%
1500 ft² 5000 ft² 30.0%

The same sum answers any part-of-a-whole question: hours of a shift, pages of a report, or square feet of lawn that is shaded.

Limits and common mistakes

  • A total of 0 has no percentage (Cannot compute).
  • Percent of total is not percent change: going from 45 to 180 is a 300% increase, but 45 is 25% of 180.
  • Round only at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I work out what percent one number is of another?

Divide the part by the total and multiply by 100.

What percent is 30 of 120?

30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.

Can the percent be over 100?

Only if the part is bigger than the total; this calculator requires part ≤ total.

How do I find the part from a percent?

Part = total × percent ÷ 100.

Formula used
in part | Part | - | 45 | 0
in tot | Total | - | 180 | 0
out p | Part as a percent of the total | % | part / tot * 100 + 0 * sqrt(tot - part) | 2
out rest | Remainder | - | tot - part | 2
out rp | Remainder as a percent | % | 100 - p | 2
