Starting Age Calculator Victoria: How It Works

Tag 08-4617 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The calculator on this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example shows how to do the sum by hand.

The Starting Age Calculator for Victoria works out the age at which a child can begin primary school, based on their birth date and the school year cut-off dates set by the Victorian Department of Education. You enter the child’s birth date and the calculator returns the first year of primary school (Prep) and the child’s age on 30 April of that year, which is the official reference date. This tool is useful for parents planning enrolment, families considering a delayed start, and anyone checking eligibility for a specific school year.

Formula

The calculator uses a simple subtraction to find the age in years on the reference date:

Age = (Reference date − Birth date) / 365.25

Where:

  • Birth date – the child’s date of birth (format: yyyy-mm-dd)
  • Reference date – 30 April of the year the child would start Prep (format: yyyy-mm-dd)
  • 365.25 – the average number of days per year accounting for leap years

The result is the child’s age in years on the reference date. The Prep year is simply the calendar year of the reference date. For example, if the reference date is 30 April 2025, the Prep year is 2025.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator:

  • Birth date: 15 June 2019
  • Reference date: 30 April 2025

Step 1: Calculate the difference in days between the two dates.

From 15 June 2019 to 15 June 2024 is exactly 5 years. From 15 June 2024 to 30 April 2025 is about 319 days (June has 15 days left, July 31, Aug 31, Sep 30, Oct 31, Nov 30, Dec 31, Jan 31, Feb 28, Mar 31, Apr 30 – total 15+31+31+30+31+30+31+31+28+31+30 = 319).

Total days = 5 × 365.25 + 319 = 1826.25 + 319 = 2145.25 days.

Step 2: Divide by 365.25 to get age in years.

2145.25 / 365.25 = 5.87 years.

Step 3: Round to two decimal places.

The calculator shows 5.87 years (5 years and about 10 months). The Prep year is 2025.

How Victorian School Starting Age Works

In Victoria, children must be enrolled in school by the time they turn 6, but most start Prep (the first year of primary school) in the year they turn 5. The key cut-off is 30 April: a child must be 5 years old by 30 April of the year they start Prep. For example, a child turning 5 on 1 May cannot start Prep that year and must wait until the following year.

Parents can also choose to delay their child’s start (known as “holding back” or “delayed entry”) if they feel the child is not ready. This is allowed in Victoria, but it means the child will be older than most classmates. The calculator helps you see the age difference if you delay by a year.

How to Use the Calculator

To use the calculator effectively:

  1. Enter the child’s birth date in the first field (format: yyyy-mm-dd).
  2. Enter the reference date – usually 30 April of the year you are considering for Prep. If you are unsure, use the year the child turns 5.
  3. Click calculate to see the child’s age on that date and the Prep year.

If you want to check a delayed start, simply change the reference date to 30 April of the following year. The calculator will show the age difference – typically about 1 year older.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

One common mistake is using the child’s age on their birthday instead of the 30 April cut-off. For example, a child born on 20 January 2020 will be 5 on 20 January 2025, so they are eligible for Prep in 2025. But a child born on 20 May 2020 will be only 4 on 30 April 2025, so they must wait until 2026.

Another misconception is that the cut-off is the same as the school year start date. While most schools start in late January or early February, the cut-off for age is always 30 April, not the first day of term.

Also, note that the calculator uses a simplified average year length (365.25 days). For precise legal purposes, you should check the exact dates with the school or the Department of Education, as leap years can shift the calculation by a day.

When to Use This Calculator

Use this calculator when:

  • You are enrolling a child in Prep for the first time.
  • You are considering a delayed start and want to know the age gap.
  • You are moving to Victoria from another state or country and need to determine the correct year level.
  • You are a teacher or administrator checking eligibility for a school year.

It is not a substitute for official enrolment procedures – always confirm with the school or the Victorian Department of Education.

Alternatives and Official Resources

If you need official confirmation, the Victorian Department of Education provides a school-age calculator on their website. Some schools also offer their own enrolment tools. This calculator is a quick, independent check that uses the same cut-off rule.

For interstate comparisons, note that other Australian states have different cut-off dates (e.g., Queensland uses 30 June, New South Wales uses 31 July). This calculator is specific to Victoria.
