Starting School Calculator UK: Age & Term Dates

The calculator on this page is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example shows how to do the sum by hand.

This calculator works out when a child in England or Wales starts primary or secondary school, based on their date of birth and the school year system. You enter the child’s birth date and choose whether you want the primary (Reception) or secondary (Year 7) start date, and you get the exact month and year they should begin school, plus their school year group. It follows the standard rule that children start Reception in the September after they turn four, and move to secondary school in the September after they turn eleven.

Formula

The core rule for state schools in England and Wales is that a child starts Reception in the academic year beginning 1 September after their fourth birthday. The same logic applies for secondary school: a child starts Year 7 in the September after their eleventh birthday. The academic year runs from 1 September to 31 August, so the key is whether the birthday falls before or after 1 September.

For a birth date D and a target stage S (4 for Reception, 11 for Year 7):

  • If the month of birth is January to August (month < 9), the start year is birth year + S.
  • If the month of birth is September to December (month ≥ 9), the start year is birth year + S + 1.

The start date is always 1 September of that year. The age at start is simply the difference between the start date and the birth date, divided by 365.25 to give years.

Worked Example

Using the default birth date of 15 April 2020 and selecting Primary (Reception):

  1. Birth year = 2020, month = 4 (April). Since 4 < 9, the start year = 2020 + 4 = 2024.
  2. Start date = 1 September 2024.
  3. Age at start = (1 Sep 2024 – 15 Apr 2020) / 365.25 ≈ 4.38 years.

The calculator shows “2024-09-01 as the start date, “Reception as the year, and “4.4 years as the age. That matches the typical scenario: a child born in April 2020 starts Reception in September 2024, just after turning four.

How the UK School System Works

In England and Wales, the state school system is divided into key stages. Primary school covers Reception (age 4–5) through Year 6 (age 10–11). Secondary school covers Year 7 (age 11–12) through Year 11 (age 15–16), after which students may continue to sixth form or college. Scotland and Northern Ireland have slightly different systems, but the September-start rule is common across the UK.

The crucial date is 1 September. Children born on or before 31 August start school in that September; children born on or after 1 September start the following year. This means a child born on 31 August 2020 starts Reception in September 2024, while a child born on 1 September 2020 starts in September 2025. That one-day difference creates nearly a full year’s age gap within the same year group.

How to Use the Calculator

Enter the child’s date of birth in the format YYYY-MM-DD (e.g., 2020-04-15). Then choose whether you want the primary (Reception) or secondary (Year 7) start date. The calculator instantly shows the September date they should start, the year group name, and their age at that point.

For example, a child born on 15 December 2019:

  • Primary start: December is month 12, which is ≥ 9, so start year = 2019 + 4 + 1 = 2024. They start Reception in September 2024, aged 4 years 8 months.
  • Secondary start: start year = 2019 + 11 + 1 = 2031. They start Year 7 in September 2031, aged 11 years 8 months.

The age at start is not always exactly 4 or 11; it ranges from 4 years 0 months (for a child born on 1 September) to 4 years 11 months (for a child born on 31 August).

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

A frequent mistake is assuming the start year is simply birth year + 4. That only works for children born between January and August. For children born in September to December, you must add an extra year. For example, a child born in October 2020 does not start Reception in 2024; they start in 2025.

Another misconception is that children must be five before starting school. In England, children must start school by the start of the term after their fifth birthday, but most parents choose to send them in the September after they turn four. This calculator uses the standard Reception start, which is what most families follow.

Also note that this calculator is for state schools in England and Wales. Scotland uses a different cutoff (usually February or March), and some independent schools may have different admission policies. Always check with the specific school or local authority for confirmation.

Why the September Cutoff Matters

The September cutoff affects not just school start but also the child’s age within their year group. Children born in the summer (June–August) are the youngest in their class, while those born in autumn (September–November) are the oldest. This can influence readiness for school, sports performance, and even academic confidence. Some parents of summer-born children consider deferring entry for a year, which is legal in England under certain conditions. If you are considering this, speak to your local council and the school directly.

The calculator gives the standard start date; it does not account for deferred entry or early entry, which require separate approval.

Alternatives and Related Dates

If you need other school-related dates, you can adapt the same logic. For example, the date a child starts Year 3 or Year 10 is simply the Reception start year plus the year number minus 1. A child starting Reception in 2024 will be in Year 3 in 2027 (2024 + 3 – 1 = 2026? Actually, Year 3 is three years after Reception: Reception is 2024, Year 1 is 2025, Year 2 is 2026, Year 3 is 2027). So the formula is: start year for Year N = Reception start year + (N – 1). For secondary, Year 7 is 2024 + 7 – 1 = 2030, which matches the calculator’s secondary output.

You can also calculate the end of primary school: the child finishes Year 6 in July of the year they start Year 7. So for a child born in April 2020, they start Year 7 in September 2031 and finish primary in July 2031.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my child is born on 1 September?

A child born on 1 September is the oldest in their year group. They start Reception in the September after their fourth birthday, so they are exactly 4 years old on the first day of school. For example, a child born on 1 September 2020 starts Reception in September 2024.

Can I defer my child’s school start?

Yes, in England parents of summer-born children (born 1 April to 31 August) can request to defer entry to Reception by a year. This means the child would start school in the September after they turn five, not four. The school and local authority must agree, but it is allowed by law. This calculator shows the standard start, not a deferred one.

Does this apply to Scotland or Northern Ireland?

No, not directly. Scotland has a different cutoff date (usually children born between March and August start in August, and those born between September and February start the following August). Northern Ireland uses a similar September cutoff to England and Wales, but the school year structure differs slightly. Check with your local education authority for the exact rules in your region.

What if my child is born in December – do they start a year later?

Yes, a child born in December starts Reception in the September after they turn four, which is the following academic year. For example, a child born on 10 December 2019 starts Reception in September 2024, not 2023. They are 4 years and 8 months old at the start.

How do I find the exact term dates?

The calculator gives the start month and year (September), but the exact first day varies by school and local authority. Typically, schools in England and Wales start in early September, often the first or second week. Check your school’s website or the local council’s term dates page for the precise date.

What about private schools?

Private schools in the UK often follow the same September intake, but some have different admissions points (e.g., 7+, 11+, 13+). They may also have different age cutoffs. Always contact the school directly for their specific entry requirements.
