What Is Snapchat Plus? Features, Cost & More

Snapchat Plus is a paid subscription tier for the Snapchat app that unlocks exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features on top of the free version. You pay a monthly or yearly fee to access things like custom app icons, story rewatch indicators, and the ability to see which friends rewatched your stories. This article explains exactly what Snapchat Plus includes, how to get it, what it costs, and how it differs from the regular free app.

What Is Snapchat Plus Exactly?

Snapchat Plus (often written as Snapchat+ or Snapchat Plus) is a subscription service introduced by Snap Inc. in June 2022. It is not a separate app; it is an add-on to the existing Snapchat app. Subscribers pay a recurring fee to unlock a set of features that regular users do not have. The company describes it as a way to give dedicated users early access to new and experimental features.

Some features are permanent, while others are “tests that may be removed or changed based on user feedback. Snapchat Plus does not remove ads, does not show who viewed your profile (unless a specific feature is offered), and does not give you a verified badge. It is purely an enhancement of the core Snapchat experience.

The subscription is available in many countries, but the price varies by region and platform (iOS vs. Android). You can subscribe directly inside the Snapchat app.

Key Features of Snapchat Plus

Snapchat Plus features have evolved since launch. As of late 2024, the main features include:

• Story Rewatch Indicator: You can see how many times a friend rewatched your story (and vice versa, they can see if you rewatched theirs). This is one of the most popular features.
• Custom App Icons: You can change the Snapchat app icon on your home screen to a variety of designs (e.g., black, gold, rainbow, or special editions).
• Pin a Best Friend: You can pin a friend to the top of your chat list, so they stay at the top even if you chat with others.
• Chat Wallpapers: Set a custom background for your chat conversations.
• Post-View Emoji: Choose a custom emoji that appears next to a friend’s name after they view your snap.
• Story Timer: Set a custom duration for your story snaps (e.g., 1 to 60 seconds, instead of the default 24 hours).
• Friend Solar System: See your “best friendsâ€ ranked by how close you are, visualized as planets in a solar system.
• Snapchat Web: Use Snapchat on the web (limited to certain regions and devices).
• Priority Story Replies: Your replies to creators’ stories are highlighted.
• Early Access to New Features: You get to try new features before they roll out to everyone.

Some features are temporary experiments. Snap Inc. often tests new features with Plus subscribers first, then decides whether to release them to all users or discontinue them.

How to Get Snapchat Plus

Getting Snapchat Plus is straightforward:

1. Open the Snapchat app on your phone.
2. Tap your profile icon (Bitmoji) in the top-left corner.
3. Look for a banner or option that says “Snapchat+ (often near your snap score).
4. Tap “Try Snapchat+ or “Get Snapchat+.
5. Choose your subscription plan (monthly or yearly) and confirm payment.

The subscription is tied to your Snapchat account, not your device. If you switch phones, you can still use Snapchat Plus by logging into your account. You can cancel anytime from the same menu; you will keep the features until the end of the billing period.

How Much Does Snapchat Plus Cost?

Snapchat Plus pricing varies by country and platform. In the United States, the standard price is:

• Monthly: $3.99
• Yearly: $39.99 (equivalent to $3.33/month, saving about 17%)

Prices may be higher in some countries due to taxes or regional pricing. Apple and Google Play also take a cut, which can affect the final price. Snap Inc. sometimes offers promotional discounts for new subscribers.

Note: The price is not fixed and can change over time. Always check the in-app price before subscribing.

Snapchat Plus vs. Regular Snapchat

The core Snapchat app is free and includes messaging, stories, filters, lenses, and video calls. Snapchat Plus adds a layer of convenience and personalization, but it does not change the fundamental way the app works. Here is a quick comparison:

• Ads: Both versions show ads. Snapchat Plus does not remove ads.
• Privacy: Both versions have the same privacy settings. Snapchat Plus does not give you extra privacy controls (e.g., you cannot hide your location from specific friends if you already have that setting).
• Snap Score: Both versions have the same snap score system. Plus does not boost your score.
• Friends: You can add the same number of friends on both versions.
• Features: Plus gives you exclusive features, but the free app still receives new features over time.

In short, Snapchat Plus is a “premium layer, not a separate app. It is designed for users who want more customization and early access to new tools.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

Several misconceptions and issues surround Snapchat Plus:

• “Can I see who viewed my profile?â€ No. Snapchat does not offer this feature to anyone, not even Plus subscribers. Any third-party app claiming to do this is a scam.
• “Does it show who screenshots my snaps?â€ No. Snapchat still notifies you only if someone screenshots a chat or a snap sent directly to you (in some cases). Plus does not add screenshot detection.
• “Will it make my snap score grow faster?â€ No. Your snap score is based on your activity, not your subscription.
• “Can I cancel and get a refund?â€ You can cancel, but refunds are generally not given for partial billing periods. You will keep Plus until the end of the paid period.
• “Why is my Plus feature missing?â€ Snap Inc. often A/B tests features. Some features are rolled out to a small percentage of users, then removed or changed. If a feature disappears, it may be because it was experimental.

Is Snapchat Plus Worth It?

Whether Snapchat Plus is worth the cost depends on how much you use Snapchat and which features you value. If you are a casual user who occasionally sends snaps, the paid features may not matter much. If you are an active user who posts stories daily and wants to see who rewatches them, or you enjoy customizing your app, then the $3.99/month might be reasonable.

Consider that $3.99 per month adds up to about $48 per year if you pay monthly. The yearly plan saves money. Compare that to other subscriptions like Spotify or Netflix, which cost more but offer more content. Snapchat Plus is a niche add-on, not a necessity.

You can always subscribe for a month, test the features, and cancel if you do not find them useful. There is no long-term commitment.
