WhatsApp Favorites Feature: How to Use It

Guide 10-8945 · Updated · Step by step

WhatsApp’s Favorites feature lets you mark specific chats and calls as favorites so they appear in a dedicated filter at the top of your chat list and call log. To use it, open a chat, tap the contact or group name, then choose “Add to favorites” (or tap the star icon on the chat list). Once added, you can filter to see only those conversations with a single tap, making frequent contacts faster to reach.

What Exactly Is the Favorites Feature?

Introduced in early 2025, WhatsApp Favorites is a built-in shortcut system that works across the Chats and Calls tabs. Instead of scrolling through dozens of conversations, you can pin a handful of important people or groups into a separate, always-visible filter. The feature is tied to your WhatsApp account, so your favorites sync across linked devices—if you add a favorite on your phone, it appears on WhatsApp Web and desktop too.

It’s important to distinguish Favorites from the older “Pinned chats” feature. Pinning keeps a chat at the very top of your main list, while Favorites creates a separate filter row you can tap to see only those selected chats. You can use both at the same time—for example, pin your family group and also mark it as a favorite for quick filtering.

How to Add a Chat or Call to Favorites

Adding a favorite takes only a few seconds, and there are two main ways to do it:

  • From the chat list: Long-press any chat (or right-click on desktop) to open the selection menu, then tap the star icon at the top. The chat is immediately added to your Favorites filter.
  • From inside a chat: Open the conversation, tap the contact or group name at the top to open the info page, scroll down, and tap “Add to favorites.”
  • From a call log: Go to the Calls tab, tap the “i” icon next to a call entry, then choose “Add to favorites.” This works for both individual contacts and group calls.

There is no limit to how many chats you can favorite, but WhatsApp recommends keeping the list short for it to be useful. You can remove a favorite anytime by repeating the same steps and tapping “Remove from favorites” or the filled star icon.

Using the Favorites Filter

Once you have at least one favorite, a horizontal row of circular profile pictures appears at the top of the Chats tab, just above your chat list. Tapping one of those circles opens that specific chat directly. Next to the circles, there’s a “Favorites” button (represented by a star or a filter icon) that, when tapped, shows only your favorited chats in the list below.

In the Calls tab, the same filter appears at the top, letting you switch between “All” and “Favorites” to see only calls from your selected contacts. This is especially handy if you frequently call the same few people and want to avoid digging through a long call history.

On WhatsApp Web and desktop, the favorites row appears in the same position, and changes you make on one device reflect everywhere instantly. If you don’t see the feature, make sure your app is updated to the latest version from your device’s app store.

How to Choose Which Chats to Favorite

The best candidates for favorites are the conversations you interact with most often—not necessarily the ones you want to keep pinned. Consider these examples:

  • Your partner or immediate family members you message multiple times a day.
  • A work group chat that needs quick access during business hours.
  • A close friend you call regularly, so the call log filter works in your favor.
  • Your own “Message Yourself” chat, if you use it for notes and links.

Avoid favoriting every group you’re in—that defeats the purpose. The feature is designed for a short list of 5–10 people or groups. If you find yourself favoriting more than that, you’re better off using regular pinning or just relying on the search bar.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Like any new feature, Favorites can occasionally cause confusion. Here are the most frequent issues and their solutions:

  • Can’t find the star icon: The star only appears when you long-press a chat (or hover on desktop). If you’re looking inside a chat, the option is under the contact info, not in the message box.
  • Favorites not syncing: Ensure you’re logged into the same WhatsApp account on all devices and that each device has the latest app update. If the problem persists, restart the app.
  • Favorites filter missing: The filter row only appears after you’ve added at least one favorite. If you haven’t added any, the row won’t show.
  • Accidentally removed a favorite: Just re-add it using the steps above—it takes seconds and doesn’t affect your chat history.

Favorites vs. Pinned Chats: Which Should You Use?

Both features serve different purposes, and understanding the difference helps you use WhatsApp more efficiently. Pinned chats occupy the top of your main chat list and are always visible, even without a filter. Favorites, on the other hand, are hidden behind a filter tap, which keeps your main list cleaner.

Use pinned chats for 1–3 conversations you never want to miss, like a family group or a critical work chat. Use favorites for a slightly larger set of contacts you want quick access to but don’t need permanently on screen. You can combine them—for instance, pin your boss and favorite your five best friends—to get the best of both.

Privacy and Security Considerations

Favorites are stored on your device and synced through WhatsApp’s end-to-end encrypted servers, just like your chats. They are not visible to the person you favorite—the other party has no idea you’ve marked them. The feature does not change your online status, read receipts, or any other privacy setting.

If you share your phone with someone, remember that the favorites row is visible on the main screen, so anyone with access to your unlocked phone can see who you talk to most. For extra privacy, you can lock WhatsApp with biometric authentication (available in Settings > Privacy) to prevent casual snooping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does favoriting someone notify them?

No. Favorites are completely private. The person you favorite will not receive any notification, and there’s no way for them to know they’ve been added to your favorites list.

Can I favorite a group chat?

Yes, group chats can be favorited exactly like individual chats. The group’s profile picture and name will appear in your favorites row, and tapping it opens the group directly.

What happens to favorites when I change phones?

Favorites are tied to your WhatsApp account, so they restore automatically when you log in on a new phone, as long as you use the same number and restore your chat backup. They sync via the cloud, not the local device.

Is there a limit to how many favorites I can have?

WhatsApp has not announced a hard limit, but the interface is designed for a short list. In practice, having more than 20 favorites makes the filter row scrollable and less convenient. Stick to your most frequent contacts.

Can I favorite a chat from WhatsApp Web?

Yes. On WhatsApp Web or desktop, hover over a chat in the list to reveal a star icon, or open the chat and click the contact name to find the “Add to favorites” option. Changes sync instantly to your phone.
