This calculator converts a volume in cubic feet into cubic yards, the unit bulk soil, mulch and gravel are sold in. Enter the cubic feet; you get cubic yards, cubic metres and litres.
Formula
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27, because a cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 ft³. Cubic metres = cubic feet × 0.028316846592 (exact). Litres = m³ × 1,000.
- v: volume in cubic feet
Worked Example
54 ft³ of mulch.
- Cubic yards = 54 ÷ 27 = 2.000 yd³
- Cubic metres = 54 × 0.0283168 = 1.529 m³
- Litres = 1.529 × 1,000 = 1,529 L
How to use the result
Bagged products are labelled in cubic feet (often 2 or 3 ft³ for mulch, 0.75 or 1 ft³ for soil), while bulk yards sell by the cubic yard. Divide by 27 to compare a pile of bags with a bulk delivery.
Cubic feet to cubic yards table
| Cubic feet | Cubic yards | Cubic metres | Bags of 2 ft³ (rounded up) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 ft³ | 0.037 yd³ | 0.028 m³ | 1 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 2 ft³ | 0.074 yd³ | 0.057 m³ | 1 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 3 ft³ | 0.111 yd³ | 0.085 m³ | 2 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 5 ft³ | 0.185 yd³ | 0.142 m³ | 3 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 10 ft³ | 0.370 yd³ | 0.283 m³ | 5 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 13.5 ft³ | 0.500 yd³ | 0.382 m³ | 7 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 20 ft³ | 0.741 yd³ | 0.566 m³ | 10 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 27 ft³ | 1.000 yd³ | 0.765 m³ | 14 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 40 ft³ | 1.481 yd³ | 1.133 m³ | 20 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 54 ft³ | 2.000 yd³ | 1.529 m³ | 27 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 81 ft³ | 3.000 yd³ | 2.294 m³ | 41 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 100 ft³ | 3.704 yd³ | 2.832 m³ | 50 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 135 ft³ | 5.000 yd³ | 3.823 m³ | 68 bags of 2 ft³ |
| 270 ft³ | 10.000 yd³ | 7.646 m³ | 135 bags of 2 ft³ |
13.5 bags of 2 ft³ fill one cubic yard, so a 1 yd³ bulk load replaces 14 bags.
Limits and common mistakes
- Divide by 27, not 9: 9 converts square feet to square yards.
- Bulk materials settle, so a delivered yard can fill less once spread and compacted.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
27 ft³.
How many 2 cubic foot bags make a yard?
