10 Tech How-To

Add Multiple Animation Effects in PowerPoint

Guide 10-29083 · Updated · Step by step

This guide shows you how to layer multiple animation effects on a single object in PowerPoint, so text, images, or shapes can move, fade, and emphasize in sequence. You’ll learn to add, reorder, and time effects for a polished presentation. No special skills or software are needed—just PowerPoint 2016 or later.

What You’ll Need

  • PowerPoint 2016, 2019, 2021, or Microsoft 365 (the steps are similar in older versions)
  • A slide with at least one object (text box, shape, picture, or chart) selected
  • The Animation Pane visible (View tab → Animation Pane)

Step-by-Step

  1. Select the object you want to animate. Click it once to highlight it. If you want to animate multiple objects together, hold Ctrl and click each one.
  2. Open the Animation Pane by going to the Animations tab and clicking Animation Pane (it’s on the right side of the ribbon). A side panel will appear, showing all current animations.
  3. Add your first effect: With the object selected, go to the Animations tab. Choose an entrance effect like Fade or Fly In. This becomes the first animation on the object.
  4. Add a second effect: Keep the object selected. Click Add Animation (next to the Animation Pane button). Choose a different category—for example, an Emphasis effect like Spin or a Motion Path like Lines. This adds a second effect without replacing the first.
  5. Add more effects: Repeat step 4 for each additional effect you want. You can mix entrances, emphasis, exits, and motion paths freely. Each new effect appears as a separate row in the Animation Pane.
  6. Set the start trigger: In the Animation Pane, click the dropdown arrow next to each effect. Choose Start On Click, With Previous, or After Previous.
    • On Click waits for a mouse click.
    • With Previous starts simultaneously with the previous effect.
    • After Previous starts automatically when the previous effect ends.
  7. Adjust duration and delay: Select an effect in the pane. In the Timing group on the ribbon, set Duration (how long the effect plays) and Delay (pause before it starts). For example, set a 0.5-second delay to create a staggered sequence.
  8. Reorder effects: Drag effects up or down in the Animation Pane to change their order. The order determines what happens first, second, and so on. You can also use the up/down arrows at the top of the pane.
  9. Preview your sequence: Click Preview on the Animations tab (or press Shift+F5 to run the slideshow from the current slide). Watch how the effects layer. Adjust timing or order as needed.
  10. Remove an effect if needed: In the Animation Pane, click the effect and press Delete, or click the dropdown arrow and choose Remove. This does not delete the object.

Common Mistakes

  • Clicking a new effect without using “Add Animation”: If you select a new effect from the gallery (not via Add Animation), it replaces the existing effect. Always use Add Animation to add.
  • Forgetting to keep the object selected: If you click elsewhere, the next effect goes to the wrong object or creates a new animation group.
  • Overloading with too many effects: Too many effects can distract or slow down your presentation. Aim for 2–4 per object.
  • Using “On Click” for every effect: This forces the audience to wait through multiple clicks. Use After Previous for automatic sequences.
  • Ignoring the Animation Pane: Without it, you can’t see the order or timing clearly. Always keep it open when editing.

Tips

  • Use motion paths carefully: Motion paths can be edited by dragging the red/green arrows. Make sure the path doesn’t go off-slide.
  • Combine entrance and exit effects: For a clean look, have an object fade in, then fade out. Use Fade for both to keep it subtle.
  • Set a consistent duration: For professional pacing, use 0.5–1 second for most effects. Longer durations feel sluggish.
  • Use “With Previous” for simultaneous effects: If you want a shape to spin while text fades in, set both to With Previous and adjust delays.
  • Test in Slideshow mode: The editing preview may not show exact timing. Always run the slideshow (F5) to see the real sequence.

Troubleshooting

  • Effect won’t add — it replaces the old one: You’re clicking the effect gallery directly. Use Add Animation instead. If you already replaced it, press Ctrl+Z to undo, then re-add with Add Animation.
  • Effects play in the wrong order: Open the Animation Pane and drag the effects into the desired order. Also check the start triggers—if an effect is set to On Click, it will wait for a click regardless of its position.
  • Effects don’t appear at all: Make sure the object is selected when adding effects. Also check that the effect isn’t set to On Click when you’re not clicking. Try setting it to After Previous to see if it plays automatically.
  • Motion path goes off-slide: Click the motion path effect in the Animation Pane, then drag the red arrow (start) or green arrow (end) back onto the slide. You can also adjust the path points by right-clicking and choosing Edit Points.
  • Animation is too fast or too slow: Select the effect in the Animation Pane and adjust the Duration in the Timing group. For fine control, type a number like 0.75 seconds.
  • Multiple objects animate together unintentionally: If you selected several objects, they become one animation group. To separate them, remove the animations and re-add them individually, or use the Animation Pane to expand the group and adjust each object’s settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can I add more than two effects to one object? Yes, you can add unlimited effects, but performance may suffer with very complex animations. Stick to 2–4 for best results.
  2. How do I make an effect start automatically after a previous one? In the Animation Pane, set the effect’s start to After Previous. You can also set a delay in seconds to create a pause.
  3. Why does my effect disappear when I add a new one? Because you’re clicking a new effect from the gallery instead of using Add Animation. The gallery replaces the selected effect.
  4. Can I copy animations from one object to another? Yes, use the Animation Painter (on the Animations tab). Select the object with the animations, click Animation Painter, then click the target object.
  5. How do I make text appear letter by letter? Select the text box, add an entrance effect like Appear or Fade. In the Effect Options dialog (click the small arrow in the Timing group), choose By Letter under Animate text.
  6. Can I reorder effects after adding them? Yes, drag them in the Animation Pane or use the up/down arrows. The order in the pane is the order they play.
